Budget Finale

While Council fixates on the effects of minor amounts on the tax rates, Council also has fiscal YTD numbers on key revenue sources including sales tax which is up 8.88% , well above what was projected...Hydro is down, but they also have expense summaries of each department to see how far under budget each account is..,,They usually are...

It's these numbers that result in those fund balance you hear about....Said balance is also substantial and they have money in another account for tax mitigation.,,,

This means all this blather about the cap and the like is a rouse .....

Now the other question is there is still no word on the odd executive session the other night that left the CM out  for over two hours while Council talked about a "bunch of people".

Is there a linkage with the equally odd act of the Manager's office nominating Public Works for a NYCOM award at the same time elimination of trash, the subject of the award, was being discussed...

Can you imagine if Council had voted to eliminate refuse at the same time they were accepting an award ?

I understand the award matter has not made the news yet..Give it time.

Hopefully they go the cut by attrition route over the year and not pink slip current employees. The employees on the list who have found themselves in this perilous situation through no fault of their own.

No, because you were one of the only ones floating and trying to advance the rumor

Mamdani has proposed a balanced budget for next year, with level spending while closing a $12b deficit.

Trump's budget proposal increases the deficit by about $300b, with a massive deficit next year of more than $2 trillion.

The law requires that the NYC Mayor submit a balanced budget, so not exactly a revelation. Mamdani’s budget proposal relies on “placeholders, which anticipate the Governor and legislature caving in to his taxation without representation plan they call “pied de terre”. Hit the rich, and even better if they can’t vote. We can worry about the eventual disastrous economic impact later. His budget proposal also depends on Hochul’s allowing postponing 100s of millions of dollars of obligations to the City’s retirement funds (kicking the can down the road). Not only does the budget proposal depend on “taxing the rich”, but selling out his union constituents to pay for his socialist programs.
Thump and his MAGA followers by contrast are just proving they have effectively forced the GOP to abandon any pretense to the traditional claim to be the party of “fiscal responsibility”.

I agree. These people are dedicated professionals who do important work that matters day in and day out. And at least one i know of has been with the city for 10 + years.

Until the City is willing to make immediate staffing cuts and reduce payroll costs, the budget problems are going to continue. You can raise fees, delay projects, and shuffle numbers around, but personnel costs are usually the biggest expense. Without addressing that directly, nothing fundamentally changes.

The city is top heavy with redundant management. Take the Police Department for example. For every Sgt position there is an Lt. above. You have an unnecessary layer of 6 Liutenants that cost $720,000 a year + overtime. The Sherrif Department has 1. The city Liutenant position was interduced under Chief Hennegan. Go back to Sergeant rule and save over 1.5 Million Dollars in payroll and benefit expenditures a year for 6 unnecessary jobs.

The city manager has an executive assistant and an executive secretary. Does a shrinking city need both? The answer is no. Cutting the assistant could save the city up to $160,000 a year in payroll & benefit expenditures. The city manager needs to do his fair share. This is not the army where you hand everything off to someone else to do.

Your letting facts get in the way of the narrative Jeff is trying to advance
You are ripe for censorship

Yup, razzle dazzle them with a meaningless word salad. He's good at that.

I agree.
These people spent years giving us road diets, roundabouts in private parking lots, and shrubbery in front of the Air Brake. At the very least they deserve a kick in the ass as they get schiff canned.

The best part of the no more Liutenants plan is that nobody would lose their job. The 12 affected would just lose 1 rank level. Plus it would help solve the shortage of patrol officers. And a win for the city tax payers.

Failure to scale back the top-heavy city workforce will only add to our financial problems next year.
