If there is an "alt right" as the press tells us, there is "alt press" and the competing realities are stark.
The columnist David Brooks talks about a political cancer that has led to the wild and wooly reality of the 2016 which is cascading into unequalled nastiness in its last three weeks.
Maybe, but changes in media and technology are making it impossible to determine real from spun.
Take a look at two respected news sources in Watertown this morning...The WDT has a wire story on A-3 about the Humane Society panning Donald Trump.
Over on the popular Newzjunky site, there's story after story alleging groping, misogyny and worse by Mr. Trump. A NY Daily News front page suggests the candidate aspires to score with ten year olds.
The respected Telemundo anchor Jorge Ramos summed it up this year when he said the rules of journalism are suspended and with such pernicious evil in the race, journalists (or whatever they are) will be judged on how much effort they expended to stop it.
The NY Times and the WaPo are leaders using their venerable status to pursue such goals.
We now know NBC wanted to release an edited Billy Bush tape on a schedule for maximum impact and in a way that would protect their commodity (Mr. Bush). In the end Bush was collateral damage. The original NBC plan to release on Friday was delayed due to the hurricane dominating the news cycle, until an employee released it elsewhere to get the story out.
Debate questions are leaked to candidates (CNN). The sighs, eye rolling, and combative attitudes of anchors towards anything Trump.
Reporters routinely report false or dubious stories and then run around demanding others react. The Bush tape has created stories where the press demands a candidate rescind her endorsement when in fact no one else is, or even cares.
Does anyone believe the tapes that will be hyped this month and the people coming forward were not easily available over the past two years. Reporters are billing themselves as scoop artists for shooting fish in a barrel.
I've seen it up close when editors and reporters anxious to pat themselves on the back selectively report and selectively don't report to achieve a conclusion and a press award.
Politics is not bean bag, but the old rules of civility and comity are fading and a fractured media landscape has left the old media in the tank many times trying to defend what they see as the old order.
That's why you see all these stories about how Trump plans to use a defeat to create an alt right media outlet. Made up story...Yes....But a window into the minds of the media now reporting the race.
