What's An Alleged Sex Crime Got to Do With Smokeeaters ? Find Out at Eleven | WWNY TV 7

A Watertown man was arrested two days ago on an alleged sex rap involving a child. Now the story is reported based on his occupation. ( The occupation was said not to have been mentioned in the State Police press release).
Why is the fact this guy is a firefighter part of the story ?
Wal-Mart clerk arrested on sex rap?....How about an
Air  Brake machinist ?  Would you call the NYAB CEO to ask about it ?
They newsmeisters say because it's a matter of public trust ?  In what way ?
We don't even know what the particulars are and we all know sex crimes are not always what they seem.
Now is it news because there is conflict over the FD ?   Usually when a public employee is arrested for such a thing they are suspended with pay...No way the Third Floor wants to do that here.
I'd like to know the occupation and employer of everyone who is humiliated by having an arrest on the news.
And by the way....some of us insiders have seen how crimes are handled differently depending on who you are and where you work...

It was a 7-year old child, for Christ's sake, Jeff. A 40-year old man!

Publish his employer; his family; his minister EVERYONE.

No level of humiliation is too much.

Your thread on this matter is indefensible, IMO.

Boy are you spot on with this post Jeff. I can recall awhile back that a certain city official was saved from a possible DWI arrest. I guess that's the treatment you get when you have the top cop on speed dial. And I am not talking about RB.

Hope they don't use a bad apple to attack an entire department. Don't forget about the jealous cop who shot his ex -gf's boyfriend through a window on a ladder. Plus the more recent cop shot exposed nudie video making the rounds online. There are bad apples here and there, but no need to condemn an entire department. Or worse yet use this for political gains.

The obvious comment is to point out that the entire department has been screwing the kids for years. But as much as we hate to admit it, you are correct, that this man's occupation and employer have nothing to do with the accusation. And it is, so far, an accusation.

All people who are not liars*, know that rape is the most falsely reported crime and some studies show that up to 47% of accusations are false. That means that, unlike when a black guy is accused of murder, there is reasonable doubt as to weather this guy is guilty.

Yeah, that cop was lucky the girl was over 18 or we would be seeing his picture on newzjunky.

7:46, the man is innocent until proven guilty. Relax. Let's not crucify him just yet.

Does a machinist at the Air Brake go to school to give talks about fire safety?
Are kids taught that machinists are someone they can trust and should contact in case of trouble?
Do machinists wave to the children and hand out candy at parades?
Are we forced to pay the salary of machinists?

Two things:
The asterisk above is intended to apply to the word, not the phrase.
And my apologies if I offend anyone with my sarcastic black guy accused of murder reference.

Possibly only one man (and if true, sickening); one crime (at this point we hear); and, and out comes the wide paint brushes to paint the entire WFD as unfit or worse to fit some silly-ass misguided agenda. That too is despicable regretful.

Because it is important to know the character of the people whom I, and everyone else in the city, pays. He is our employee, and we need to know if the employees that we place our trust in, are worthy of said trust, and pay. Seems pretty simple to me.

7:46 I'm with ya 100%, just like those Amber alerts but with a face photo on billboards, at major intersections.

The only way we are going to stamp out this deviant behavior at all levels of society is post plaster these creepy.

Had this been done early and often questioning the likes of Weiner and creepy Bill Clinton I don't think that many women would have been assaulted.

Breakdown of society at all levels. Thank you Democrats.

I have to agree with you Jeff. This was an "alleged" act committed by a person. It should not matter what the person's occupation is, as this is alleged to have occurred while off-duty, and it is very unfair to put this out as a headline. How does someone recover from such a wide-spread publication of him, his occupation, and a nice big picture to go along with it.

Innocent until proven guilty sounds nice, but as you can see here, some people already have the pitch-forks and flaming torches out. Lets just see what happens before we condemn him and his entire occupation.

You are correct, 8:37 PM, but I wouldn't rush to defend him either. There is as equal a chance he is guilty as innocent.

Generally, where there's smoke there's fire (pun intended).

Due process, people. Presumed innocent until proven guilty.

What I would like to know is how this person is allowed to remain on active duty as a city firefighter? The more appropriate course of action would be to suspend with pay or to relegate to an administrative post pending the outcome of the matter.

Guilty until proven innocent is one thing but can the City Manager guarantee that this person will not have any contact with a minor during he course of his regular duties? What is there is a child involved in an accident or a tour group comes to the fire station? This seems like a potentially reckless course of action considering the seriousness of the charges.

When a recent Detective in Ogdensburg was accused of possessing child pornography (not even molestation) he was immediately removed and suspended with pay. This seemed appropriate considering the possible risk to the general public. Has cost once again trumped common sense her in the good ol' COW?

11:17 you are right, that this is your money.. So is the money you spend on the CM and the council and all their stupid responses and actions regarding this department.. maybe you should worry about the big picture and voice your concern about that.... or just go back to your TV.
1:42, this is totally innocent till its proven in court. This is the City of Watertown. You cant compare Watertown to Ogdensburg.. we are all backwards here the way we run government. Dont insult the berg..

This is amazing. The fire queens get a black eye from one of their own being accused of a serious crime, and they have the nerve to come on here and try to argue for a way for it to get them more OT. Congrats...you girls have stooped to a new level.

Maybe his boss or the city manager already gave the edict that this accused employee shall not be given assignments where he would be left alone with children. Of course that would mean he couldn't serve with any of the fire queens because they are mostly children.

8:23 I bet you would never set foot in a fire station and say one word you so bravely post on this blog. Until you find the gonads to do that your arguments really hold no value. Its the same old crap every time with no truth to any of your statements. Just name calling and your warped version that holds not one bit of truth. Did your wife run off with a fireman or something? If so I can sure see why if you act like this at home. Now crawl back into your mommy basement.

8:23 am, or should I just refer to you as who you are, Bart B. It's interesting that you constantly insult the firemen with your name calling or refer to them as children when you yourself act just like one! Maybe one of these days you will actually say something that has a little bit of intellect to go along with your comments!

7:41 - breakdown in American society - thank you DEMS?

Is there anything your type won't blame on DEMS? How about Sunrise and Sunset not to your liking or the price of tea in China? Or disappearance of ducktail haircuts and bell-bottom pants or hula hoops?

Really 823, you really think the firemen are on here trying to use this to get overtime. If you pulled your head out of your ass long enough to listen you would hear the fire union arguing for the city to hire people to fill vacant position to REDUCE overtime. It is the city leaders that are driving up the overtime costs. If vacant positions were filled, overtime would be virtually nonexistant, but that is not what the city wants as it doesnt fit their agenda.
Did you ever stop and think if it is firemen here saying he should be suspended that maybe they do not want to share a fire station with someone accused of such a crime? Would you like to live with someone that has this accusation over them, true or not? The other firemen did not hire him nor can they chose who they work with so I am sure it is not a comfortable work enviroment.

It is sad that you lead such a miserable hate filled life. I feel bad that any one person can be filled with so much hatred. That is what is wrong with the world today.

Anonymous said...

12:29, Right on cue, you show up to defend the indefensible, with idiotic excuses.

The taxpayers do not care if you and the rest of your overtime hounds want to share a fire station with the accused or not. They don't care that you don't want to work with gays, blacks or women either.
The fact is that this accused person is perfectly capable of performing his job with no danger to the public or to children.
The fact is that you want him on paid leave so that you and your buddies can get some overtime.

900 are you drinking tonight? This issue has nothing to do with overtime and you know it. This has to do with what is a reasonable course of action when something like this happens. I have been a personnel manger for most of life and can tell you that this situation is hardly business as usual for anyone. While you want to give an accused person the benefit of the doubt, you also have to take steps to ensure that the public is reasonably protected. If this same situation had occurred at any other time, other than when the city is trying to make a point, it would have resulted in a paid suspension. This is how it is done.

As for your statement that all the firemen are all homophobic, racist, and sexist you are just showing your ignorance. How dare you make such a statement!!! Grow up.

Anonymous said...

8:06, grow up yourself. I already stated the fact: "this accused person is perfectly capable of performing his job with no danger to the public or to children." But you chose to ignore the facts.

Not only do you ignore fact but you make them up to. I never said, "all the firemen are all homophobic, racist, and sexist...".

But it is strange that the number of city fire fighters who are black, female, openly homosexual or transgender is approximately zero, yet no one has lifted a finger to attempt to recruit even a single one of these underrepresented people in your union. Instead you complain because the city manager now has a much needed human resource specialist and the money spent on that could have been used to pad your pensions with OT. Grow up yourself.

All of the mentioned ones in your post are very capable to take the test, pass it, pass the agility test, interview, academy and finally land a great job as a firefighter. It takes a special person along with police and ambulance attendants to care for citizens who are total strangers and risk their lives for them. Yes, some make great money but must love the job and its dangers to protect asses such as yours for insulting them without even knowing what they and their families go through. Most troopers make well over 100,000. That's your state tax dollars too. should they be treated any different??? NO. They all work together to save lives and you should respect them. IF you want those perks, then take the test and pass, read, perform and reap the benefits. Otherwise, shut up!!
