WDT: Can You Imagine If the Headline Read Differently

"Thousands ticketed in north country during impaired driving crackdown" reads the conventional main stream media headline.
What if the editor had written "State scams thousands in NNY shakedown"
Which is correct ? Both ?
In a two week period touted as a crackdown on drunk driving, Troopers wrote 4185 tickets to NNY motorists.....73 of them were for DWI.
Seems it was more of a ticket blitz and that's a boost to the coffers of the state and good for many town courts where the tickets are paid.
It's not good for motorists subjected to what is in effect an impromptu tax. Given the cost of a ticket with court fees, this is a hardship on many cash strapped North Country families, but these things get reported as if larger numbers are a good thing.

Handy Andy has to find a way to pay for all of those wonderful(?) programs that he initiated just to garner votes somehow.

Save your breath, Jeff.

We all agree with you, but as long as NY City is part of this state nothing will ever change. V&T tickets MAKE money. Fighting real crime COSTS money. Besides, if the cops started fighting real crime, the politicians would be the first to get arrested................And since we don't have a death penalty for anyone but cop killers they would have to write even MORE V&T's to pay for feeding all the crooks they put in prison.

Either obey the laws or deal with the cost. I know this is a concept you do not support Jeff.

Have you ever had a family member or friend die at the cost of the alcohol you serve and then drive and die ?

You might understand it some day if it unfortunately happens to someone close to you. Your comments go too far often which is why you were unelected.

8:03, get a grip. If this was about DWI, there are a million ways to get a lot more DWI offenders, other than clamping down on petty traffic violations. Start by actually prosecuting the repeat offenders, which we don't do. And the fact that millions of people leave the bars every night and don't hit anything or kill anyone is proof DWI is not as dangerous as you think it is.

You have a strange disregard for the law, Jeff, given you were mayor for eons.

I don't think it's about the law. It's about Sir Andy (insert punchline) claiming he is working towards a "safer" NY while subsidizing his failing programs by ruling as a dictator. It's interesting to me, I don't read about these types of programs in Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Oklahoma, etc..simply because they are free states that don't have to pay for layer upon layer of administration. And, let's be frank, Mr. Cuomo as never had to drive for himself so...

8:53 why don't you take a trip to a prison and find out how many repeat (aggravated DWI) people are serving time? If you do not think they are cracking down then continue to ignore statistics.

And Jeff you are just baiting people to hate law enforcement so do not claim to be any different than Obama or Hillary

I think the mayor is speaking honestly about this. if you have ever had a friend or family member in law enforcement, then you know it is a highly subjective and selective endeavor. It's all about who you are or who know that ends up determining your fate if stopped. It's a rigged system to protect the haves and screw the have nots.

Drove from Central Square to Coffeen Street on 81 yesterday and saw FOUR TROOPERS! And that's just in the north bound lane.
Wonder why our taxes are so high when we waste money paying people $100k+ plus benefits and equipment to write tickets. As if there's a huge issue with people getting injured on 81.

DWI is not as dangerous as you think...dumbest statement of the day.

I totally appreciate the mayor's persoective. Government is so big and so bloated half the time they seem to exist just so they can continue to exist! That being said, if you follow the law, you won't get a ticket. It's that simple. Wear your seatbelt. Fix your tail light. Drive smart and drive safe and everyone wins.

12:21, You are a fool. I know lots of people who have gotten tickets when they did nothing wrong. And what more troubling is that I know lots of people who have NOT gotten tickets when they WERE doing something wrong. Like the cop that killed his wife up north. He should have gotten a ticket for dumping the body in the road.

My big problem with this onetime infraction blitz is that I once drove through three roadblocks all within a mile of the city, all within an hour. We don't want a police state, no matter how much overtime it gets you!!!

Set aside the arguments about IF we should even have a seat belt law, (but do note that there are no seat belts on motorcycles, snowmobiles or boats.) Instead, try to grasp your freedom hating head around the simple fact that we don't want to be hassled by roadblocks just to catch minor offenses.

BTW...lying to say it is about DWI when its really about seat belts and inspection stickers is sleazy.
