Elections can prove interesting and so it is with the GOP nomination in the 116th AD......William Sheridan leads by seven votes over John Byrne in unofficial returns with absentees and other paper yet to be counted.
The former SLC Legislator, prison employee, and legislative aide ran a come from behind effort as both men spent tens of thousands of dollars on the primary that barely topped ten percent turnout among the district's Republican faithful.
The winner will face Assemblywoman Addie Russell.
Former Olympic bobsledder Russ Finley finished third.
Since he seemed well organized, I assume Mr. Sheridan had the better absentee game in play and if his margin holds the issue remains of Mr. Byrne still on the ballot on the three me-too lines.
Russell insiders had expected a possible Sheridan win and will face a fall campaign centered on the assertion the incumbent is more in tune with downstate Dems than her NNY constituency.
The lack of interest on the Republican side along with antipathies between the candidates don't bode well for the GOP, but in an anti incumbent year, and with an effective anti-downstate message, Mr. Sheridan may find traction.
Got to wait for the final results though, as things can change easily. I wouldn't put a check mark next to anyone's name yet in this race.
