Candidates often tout their list of local officials who back them, and in SLC this week Rep. Elise Stefanik had to say "oops" when a couple Dems showed up on a list. They claim they didn't endorse her but we will never know.
They could have agreed to be on the list as an exercise in conflct avoidance and keeping good relations with their MOC. They also could have changed their mind, perhaps after a call from a June O'Nelll type.
There was a gubernatorial primary a couple years back where local elected offiials were reminded not to get off the reservation.
In any event, these lists of local endorsements have become perfunctory and are only paid attention to when something goes awry and requires an apology.
Of course the two who wanted off the list have drawn attention to the 82 who want to be on it. I'll take those odds. Long term, showing up the Congresswoman publicly may or may not prove a clever move.
