WDT: People On Cell Phones Warn of Dangers of Being on Cell Phones

The Times reports cell phone tickets are more plentiful and police are reitterating their warning of the dangers of distracted driving. Fair enough, but it seems whenever you see a police officer driving by , they are on their cell phone.
Now, I'm sure they are exempt from the law either by statute or just because who's going to write them up ?
But just for appearance sake, couldn't the police be equipped with some kind of blue tooth gadget in the car.
People bristle at authority but they dislike hypocrisy even more.

I agree completely. No reason the cops shouldn't be using Bluetooth. They are not immune to distraction.

I saw a cop directing traffic at a signal malfunction a few years back, cell phone up to the ear with one hand, and directing traffic with the other. I'm sure it must have been "official" business that he was conducting.

Yes, the law exempts cops.
A bigger safety issue is texting and surfing internet on the phone.
Another bigger danger is those cops using their CAD(computer aided dispatch).
And of course the biggest danger is having to hide your phone in your lap and looking down plus back up to look for cops.
BTW...there is nothing magically safer about wearing a hands free device.

Yes, the cops should use bluetooth #756. Thanx

I guess you guys aren't aware of the little games cops play with their cell phones. Texting each other snapshots of your license to see who comes up with the ugliest.
BTW, with the number of people using cell phones while driving, it can't be nearly as dangerous as it seems or accidents would have skyrocketed the last few years. In fact, they're presenting facts that usage is up, let's see the stats on accidents...

Exactly, everyone, or the police chief should make this a policy that they are NOT on their cell phones while driving. Their CAD will send messages if its important from the dispatch center, or how about just pulling over. Or, are they actually work cell phones or personal. If personal, then they are wrong using them while driving. Or, if they are caught, and its not emergency business, then they should be reprimanded. But, who will support this? The ones in charge are frolicking around so it really doesn't matter, it will never be carried through with.

You guys are nuts!
The only time a 'reprimand' should be if an officer is video recorded, drinking alcohol while on duty.
If it's girly-man, flavored whiskey, that's being drunk, it should simply be dumped out. But if it's a K-9 handler, it should only be an infraction!

Maybe they should require checks of their detectives who go places where they shouldnt go. Maybe visit and talk with girls he dates, or wants to date or visits one of his kids mothers while on duty. He is way off base and his friendly members he works with are talking so maybe he should be put on the radar to see what time on our money is spent visiting or doing personal things.
His father was quite an enforcer but those times have changed. You better look into this and make sure it is corrected STAT.
