WDT: Chamber Pledges Reorganization

In a meeting with the Times E-Board, the local Chamber of Commerce pledged to restructure themselves in the wake of dwindling membership, financial woes and a move back to its former HQ on Coffeen Street.
All well and good, and kudos on the move, but you have to wonder why our Chamber played checkers for so many years while the powerhouse chamber over in Plattsburgh played chess.
That was something I saw clearly in time spent at meetings of the North Country Regional Economic Council.
      The difference was stark.

The Chamber is a left-wing political organization. Only an idiot would join. Unless of course, if your business is sucking on the government teat. If you make money off from schools, hospitals, Drum or other government work, then yes, by all means, join.

This group suffers from the same problem that NSIL and Council suffer from. That being, the brain drain has left a small number of smart people in the area. But more importantly, it has left a large number of dumb people in the area. And then off course the worst thing is that most of the few who pass for being smart, are here because they are sucking at the government teat, which makes them blind to facts.(you know who you are golf course residents !!!) The result is a low quality pool of volunteers and leaders in our county. Sure, a guy like your old boss could take over the NSIL and make a go of it, but guys like him have mostly all moved to Florida. But then again, even if he still lived here, he is one who over the years, metamorphosed to play the local game of government teat, in exchange for being invited to the right cocktail parties.

Perhaps they should be encouraged to reach out to a few successful chambers as models and see what they might learn?

Hey 806 You're right, this is how Repubs have taken over the North Country..

That is rich 806. The chamber is rife with the usual suspect Republicans. :D

So what 8:29, no chamber employee should buy a car? Or a house? Or vacation? WTF, it's not a monastery.

Whatever the next Great G is supposed to be. Sounds like big shows to fill.

Take a look at who the chair of the Chamber board was when the move happened and is now again the current chair. Might explain the lack of leadership and diminishing membership. Not qualified.
