Oswego Mayor Proposes Actual Staff Cuts in Fire Department

The City of Oswego's new mayor is proposing the elimination of 16 firefighter and one police job as a means of closing a looming budget shortfall.
Mayor Billy Barlow's proposed spending plan, like what's going on here, is based on the premise that the staffing exceeds demand based on the actual incidence of fires, plus a feeling the public is tired of tax hikes...
In Watertown, no end in sight to the labor impasse, but it will be interesting to see what happens in Oswego.

First term Mayor had the b-lls to do what a five term Mayor didn't

If I remember correctly you left carnage from inaction for the first Mayor Butler also.

7:21, You forgot to mention that the five term mayor took a little break while Butler senior served a term. Now that I pointed out your oversight, can we expect you will comment on Joe senior's lower anatomy too?

I will pretend you are not an idiot for moment and explain something else to you. When our five term mayor was first elected, it was a different era. The voters, fellow lawmakers, and media controllers would not have stood for making today's cuts. Plus smoke detectors and other fire safety equipment was not as ubiquitous as it is today. Nevertheless, cuts were made and barns were closed, even back then. Did Graham underestimate the public's current appetite for reining in the fire queens? Sure. But it wasn't because Graham lacks nerve, it was just a simple misjudgment. Easy to make such misjudgments with the local media and union horns blaring.

On a side note...expect 'shwago to see some mysterious unsolved arson very soon.

Just another example of politicians who are trying to make up for years of poor management by cutting vital services. Oswego is already an understaffed fire department and this move will juts make an unsafe situation more unsafe.

I guess the Mayor missed the part about the Oswego Fire Department rescuing 3 people from a house fire just 2 weeks ago. If these staffing cuts had occurred a month ago I question if these 3 people would still be alive. This is a very dangerous thing to do and I just pray that this is not a blueprint for what they would like to de here in Watertown. This is not a game!!!!!! These are people's ives that are gambling with. You can not tell me that there are not other areas of savings. Why does it always seem to be public safety first?

9:37 go back and read the last line of my 7:21 comment I think you might comprehend after reading it a couple of times that The five term mayor took a voter installed hiatus.

"If I remember correctly you left carnage from inaction for the first Mayor Butler also."

Note the word "also" seeing how the second Butler is following JG, this implies what you believe I left out unless you are otherwise reading impaired

It will be terrible. Now Oswego will have old ladies burning to death. Schools will melt. Cats will have to stay trapped in trees. No one left will know how to drive a firetruck. And all those freed up captains will have to learn how to fish. Doom looms.
