Funiciello: Fort Drum Missile Defense Proposal Is "Abolutely Ridiculous" | WWNY TV 7

The lead sentence of this WWNY story reads, "As the North Country rallies around a missile defense system at Fort Drum."  Well, that's an opinion. Most people don't know about it and some do oppose it. It's one of those conventional wisdom leads.

Tonight City Council will pass a perfunctory resolution in favor and the taxpayer supported FDRLO  is up on TV urging people to sign an on-line petition. (I did, but for no other reason than after 20 years as mayor it was reflexive).

Against this backdrop, Green Party Congressional candidate Matt Funiciello speaks heresy, telling TV 7 the whole thing is "ridiculous" and could decrease troop strength there. Let's face it, no one dare speak against conventional wisdom unless you are an iconoclast speaking truth to power and not seeking to win.

Now, I assume it's good on the theory that if DC is spending, let them do it here.

This argument about more sales tax revenue is just local government salivating.

I am all for greater use of Drum, but honestly I have little idea of what this all is or the impact. But since we are all rallying in support, there are clearly many others who feel as I do.

Why would there be more sales tax?? The on-post housing was tax exempt, and now they rent to anyone, maybe we'll make the case missle defense is good for the economy and get low cost financing through the usual agency.

I agree with him and also I agree with the Admirals and others in DOD who oversee such projects ... they say it is not necessary and one huge waste. Boondoggle comes to mind.

WDT had big article today on that, too Seen here.

Just build pyramids and be done with it. Sure as hell certain there's more usefulness in a fancy tomb than a maginot line-in-the-sky that don't work nohows.

And ya have the nerve to bitch 'bout state welfare with your grasping hands forever stretched towards the Federal trough.

The Baker can clearly think outside the box.

9:59, Its two different issues. If we are gong to spend the money, we might as well get it spent here. To compare that to welfare is the type of idiocy that only a golf course hero could think is a valid point.

8:20 - crawl back in the sewer where you came from - gawd you are patently awful. Why not stop hiding and reveal yourself and then stand up with and by your convictions ... oh, wait, you don't have any. Never mind.

Bullshit, 8:20. Ft Drum is a welfare program for the well-heeled of this area, end of story.

It takes a special kind of moron to continually harrass a veteran and man in his 70's. Must have had a remarkable upbringing.

Sometimes the 'movers & shakers' of the Watertown are outright hilarious. There is squawking about drugs, crime, zombie houses, abandoned wives/children needing shelter, property & school taxes continue to rise, but yet "where we be without Ft Courage?"

Reminds me of that silly movie 'Fear Strikes Out' when JP tells the shrink to stop criticizing his dad because "if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be where I am today".

Then he realizes he is in the nut house.

If it were in funicello's backyard, I'm sure he'd find it within himself to justify. That guy is still sore over Griffiss. You are not capable of leadership baker boy...

Funciello getting better and better, proved again that he is a independent thinker. Funciello for congress as he will excellent leader and supporter of NY 21, not like Stefanik mostly hot air and voting the opposite of what she is talking about. Woodchucks here are so easy to cheat and to sell out, When the lies come from a good looking young woman they are sold, Why even bother to look at here voting record or her sponsors, to much work, we believe the pretty girl lol

@ 11;41 AM
Exactly, and they will be long gone out of here or not living in this area in the first place, like military contractors , when the missiles will be a bulls eye target for an attack but they made their millions so why should they care about some north country rednecks.
There might be 1500 jobs during construction, but after that, they can work a missile silo or drone basis with around 100 military jobs, as seen in Europe during the cold war. There where missile silos with around 50 jobs operating.

@6:54 PM
Are you talking about your self as you think other people are or think the same as you are?
Funciello seem to be a man of integrity and moral and not to be bought by big business firms or military contractors as Ms.Stefanik. Just look where the money for her campaign is coming from and its easy to see that she does not care about the people of the north country being Bulls eye for an attack. She does not have to worry as she does not live here and belongs to the protected elite.
She also never talked or acknowledged that Fort Drum already down sized from 19000 to 15000 Soldiers. Why we do not here about that from her? As a member of the armed forces committee, she should know about that and the fraud the campaign to keep Fort Drum in this area was.
Funciello does not seem to have the victim and sheeple mind of some North country people here who are willing to sacrifice and bring their live in danger for some military and minimum security guard jobs at a missile silo He is not in for the money and big campaign donations. He knows better then that.

12:22AM Funi, our dough is starting to rise from all that yeast you are using. Get back to the bakery and punch down the dough. One day you may be able to pay your employees a fair living wage without living on your fellow business owners to pick up the slack for their medical health insurance coverage.

Someone has to work to pay for your loaves of bread you produce. Who do you expect to pay for your expensive loaves of bread? Hmmmmmmm?
