WDT: Council Rejects Church Bid for Fee Waiver

City Council voted four to one not to waive fees for a Father's Day church service at the Arena.
It is problematic that events get scheduled and then just before the event is held a request is made that puts Council on the spot. It would seem such a request would come before the event is put together.
Councilman Walczyk, who is said to attend the New Life Church in Stateway Plaza, voted in favor of the waiver.
Procedurely a waiver didn't need to be voted on if there was not an introduction and second to a motion. Lack of a motion would require existing law to prevail, so I don't know why a vote was taken.
Council has already lost a key event at the Arena this year. The Bravo Festival, a popular September event, opted not to use the renovated facility although the decision has not been widely reported.

Walcyzck. What a fool.

Hes no fool.. Always looking for something to make himself look good... Typical Ritchie server.. All media coverage, smiles while doing nothing and I mean nothing.

He's a fool if he has aspirations for higher office. Not happening markie!

Why is he a fool? Because he wanted to bring an event to the Arena?? Help a church? This multi million dollar facility will lose events left and right. It has begun. If these have to go to vote every time there may be an event, the process will take to long. The Parks and Recs "czar" (LOL) has to have some authority to get business in there. If that means cutting a deal every now and then, then so be it. Better than not having anything in there. What's going to happen when the men's hockey league folds? Those things fall apart all the time. Then what do we have? Fool? Who are the fools?

That church delivers its congregation in elections. Last year they voted for Walczyk who respects that. They also voted for Butler but he gave them the fireman treatment.

The whole thing needed to be handled down at the Rec's office. That's the stupid. Bringing it into City Hall.

They have fees so they must be charged. You can not pick and choose. If you are going to make a choice is should be to not charge anybody or charge everybody. Walcyck should have recused himself. But 8:40 your prediction is meaningless. You cite no reason and resort to calling names. If you have to do that you are losing your argument and basing it on your emotions.

I find it interesting that it's always brought up about recouping the money for the project through rentals. It this is our thinking, then shut it down now. Cut the losses. Eliminate Parks and Recs. That is not why this was built, or God, I hope not. How about booking events at reasonable costs, selling sponsorships, maybe doing events on our own?? Wait, that would require sales. Scratch that. Maybe a couple of sectional hockey games. How about getting SUNY Potsdam, or, one of the D1 teams to play an exhibition game. I pray, this wasn't built to raise money for the city of Watertown. But, with the previous council, I don't know what to think.

Good for them. Every church in northern NY would be standing at city hall with their hands out if council would have given the arena away. We subsidize churches enough with all of their tax breaks. New Life owns multiple for-profit businesses that help prop up their super-church. Maybe ci-ci's should chip in a couple G's to support their church event. Not up to the taxpayer. When is Marky Mark going to start standing up for us? He voted to raise taxes and lobbied for his church to be given free stuff! Sounds like another greasy Albany liberal to me!

That church should have had Dannie put in the application. He knows how to get stuff for free.

You and Walcyzk are both fools 1030. The arena wasn't built for churches to use for free. It was built with tax dollars. It is a nice facility and ALL groups that wish to use it need to pay.

Congrats to the super of Parks & Rec. Someone hired the right LADY.

Obvious the people who want to give the site out for free don't pay city taxes. Go to Walmart and ask for a few free items from the store or your neighborhood bar for a couple of drinks on the house , They would tell you we need to charge you to stay in business so why would the darn arena be any different ? Oh I forgot just cut rates and waive fees and have the tax payer make up the lost revenue. Mr. walczyk should have excused himself from voting as he is a member of that church.Boy he is off to a great start this year voting to raise property taxes & give away city services for free. Enjoy your one term on council.

1042 Are you kidding me? Nice post Erin's mom.

Nice try 10:42. Nice try. Your compliment of the yes person is fun. Don't forget one thing, the department heads in this city are nothing but figureheads. As in this situation, all this person can do is push it up the line for a vote. The person is in no position to succeed. She has to book a facility no one wanted with rates no one will pay. I actually sympathize some for her.
