Boxing Legend Passes

An unabashed love of self yielded to a selfless message of service in the life of Muhammad Ali who died late Friday in a Phoenix area hospital. The 74 year old "Greatest" was admitted Thursday with breathing problems. His later years had hobbled him with Parkinson's Disease but a generation remembers the Champ boasting he "floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee."

I loved this guy when I was a kid. I remember at first thinking it was strange that he bragged. Then some adult explained that it was just for show and to psych-out his opponent. Then I was okay with and started to enjoy it. The guy was a genius.

Agree with all above, but can never forget the court case - Clay v. United States, reminder of the past at the following web address:

The recent Memorial day recognized the true American hero, those that served voluntarily, but more importantly those that served because they were unable to avoid military service through the process of litigation.

He could beat someone up in a boxing ring so he is the great one?Big deal,no hero to me.Wonder if such love to will be shown to a mma champion by our esteemed mayor.Oh that's right, that is one violent sport he doesn't like.

The guy was a barely functional idiot. He was fed little one liners by his promoters, so he wouldn't completely embarrass himself. He was used by the system, and people made a fortune off him. From Howard on down.

What a moron. Duh, I hit you really hard. Duh Ok, Boss ? Did I do good ? Huh ? Huh ?

The only one who dodged the draft more was donald.

The military draft during the Vietnam War was a heinous political tool used to enact a heinous foreign policy of war mongering. How long will some hawks hang onto the belief that evading the draft was un-American or cowardly, when in fact it took considerable courage and personal committment to stand in opposition to the war . Civil disobedience will never be understand or appreciated by those who believe in blind patriotism and following the crowd mentality out of a unthinking sense of duty.

Who can be sure of Ali's motivation, but he used his stature to make a case for following one's personal morality instead of being sacrificed for the ego-maniacal machinations of world political leaders bent on flexing their military muscles.

Military service and the sacrifices made by thousands/millions of Americans in defense of democracy, in the face of oppression, or national defense is laudable and something to be proud of, both as individuals and as Americans.
But to label draft evaders in the Vietnam War as cowards ,because they refused to fight in an immoral, indefensible war game is simply wrong.
