Third Floor and Smokeeaters Spar At Budget Session

Sounds like little was accomplished last night as Council Members and the Fire Department traded jabs over sick time, overtime and staffing.
There is real antipathy between Council and one fifth of the city's work force and no end in sight to the labor discord as the city attempts to cut costs but hasn't really explained how, other than insisting they want to end minimum manning but refusing to assert they want to cut staffing.

There is much more antipathy emanating from the fire fighters toward the taxpayers.

Is the council really that stupid? They have created the overtime problem by not filling vacant positions, if I remember correctly they could have filled 2 for free last year and turned it down. I get it they want to do away with minimum staffing but they don't seem to be wanting to negotiate to do that. Cant have it both ways, I believe you will find a city manager or mayor signature on the contract so it is what they agreed to

Time for her to go........

811.. No the council isnt stupid.. Yes they are to part the fault with the OT situation but its all part of doing with less to lessen the taxpayers burden. Do the firefighters have any real concern for the taxpayers.? NO.. Do they need mandated numbers?? NO.. Are they worth the money they make?? Probably not but the city manager and council must be more concerned than us on that issue. They dont want it both ways they want whats best for taxpayers. Your concerns about a signature is right it is what they agreed to but times have changed and its time to tighten up on the budgets and time the city sets mandates not the union. As far as sick time if its abused then disipline the employee if it happens a second time fire them.

8:11 you are right.
It is the union and council from previous negotiations which have secured the collective bargaining for the safety of the taxpayers and members of the fire department. Its funny Mr. Butler is criticizing the fire department when he worked and met with them to get elected. Its not just the fire department which raises the taxes. How about the arena which is going to be there for years cutting into our budget. What about the Police? When there is a major crime dont they call in people? How many are working each day now on the streets and the drugs are still here. How about their school officer? Doesnt that create overtime because he is not on the road. What about the evidence collectors? How many major crimes are there for them to be off the road. Cant the police men on the streets or detectives take photos? How about some staff sergeants or others in the public Safety building who push papers? Cant they do that while on the road. Why is a lieutenant needed for each shift. Why cant the sergeant take care of the shift and the lieutenant be called if needed. That's what the State Police do and they cover many more crimes than our little city. How about the brand new dump truck with two four doors for 4 guys to ride around the city for pot holes. Why cant two do that. There are many more ways to cut including city hall where others positions are being made. Its time to look at everyone and not the ones you will be out there supporting and saying nice things when they save another life and talk out the other side of your mouth to say "great job" when you really want to say "good bye" and work with fewer people, try not to get hurt. Maybe they can be cut so much that they just let houses burn and people die and then you as a council can think back and say we did a great job saving a few hundred thousand dollars.. Sorry for your loss. Maybe all the legal council fighting what your studies say to do, and that will save most of what you area looking for. I really wish you all would smarten up.. your stubbornness is really what is causing the overtime and high budgets... look at everyone not just one group.. you all are really adults.. as for Ms. Macaluso....she is the one who said "here we go again" when the dog park guy came up to voice his concern.. is that really acting like an adult and supporting your constituent people???? I bet she doesn't run after this term.. she will have a big fight for her unprofessionalism and will not bring her back on the council... Thank God.

Wow ! I just read Joe's press release and it turns out its true..."Joe knows". Good for him to take a stand and not turn the other cheek as the fire union is taking unfair sucker punches at the city, in the ring of public opinion. Keep up the good fight Joe ! The taxpayers are on your side.

1043..
Council and manager are looking in these areas also but your job has become a joke. Selectively answering emergency medical calls depending of serious enough in order to run up numbers.. Calling in sick when not sick in order to give co-workers overtime.
One thing that should change is the work week for firemen. Three shifts of eight hours with two days off. In that respect you would join the real people in the work week. Dont compare yourselves with police they have a job which requires some thought where yours is more like that of a CO in a prison not a job you have to think a lot and only have to do something once in a while..
The little empires of the years past have got to go and unions better get used to it.

BS The taxpayers are on his side. Why would there be hundreds of signs supporting the FF if the city is on his side. Its ironic that three studies have been done and three times the city has challenged the studies "they paid for with our tax dollars" and in the end, the court decides that the manning has to stay. When will they decide that their decisions from the past are just that. DECISIONS which both sides signed to and AGREED!!!!!!!!! Get that in your thick heads, because if your job gave you something and then wanted to cut it out, how would you feel. Your wages are very deserving and so are theirs. National Grid is killing our small cost of living increase, but who do we talk and complain to about that.???? Our taxes are going up because of a 11 Million dollar arena you all voted for, and who is paying for that??? if its not your mistake, then its a good one and we still have to pay for it.
Lets look at other positions in the city which are not needed but are kept, and those jobs which are being added...I wonder why the CM is so helpful for the Police...oh yeah, they provide a great taxi service when top officials need it most. too bad Roxanne wasn't afforded that same service.
Lets be fair people, learn from our mistakes and lets do what is right for everyone.

Just give the Firequeens whatever they want. When there is no taxpayer money to confiscate, they will have a 10 man fire department. Don't believe for a second these people are advocates for public safety.

Narcissists are never wrong. That is why the make the best leaders, ask Hitler.

1:28 Your opinion of what is right is off base. You are only reading the part of the recommendations of the studies that suit you.

The employer (City) needs to be the one deciding staffing levels, not the union, period.

8:16, let it go because she is doing a good job and is here to stay.

1:28 She is so on her way out! She serves at the pleasure of the council & being an election coming soon there just might be 3 no votes for her to continue. Remember the politician will always save their ass first.

And they are NOT using the parts that benefit them??????
C'mon man, its reality in results..
They are discriminating against one department and hopefully the judge sees that when deciding the results..
Then we can live with what is actually right..
Thank you.
