Everyone is writing stories on the supposed intrigued surrounding the presumed nomination of Donald Trump as the GOP Presidential candidate. Around no one is the chatter greater than around Speaker Paul Ryan, who is now the guardian of the flame for the establishment GOP.
The rapid clinching of the nomination by Mr. Trump in the last three weeks was a surprise for party officials who had thought it would all come down to a contested convention.
Among the political class there was little belief the great unwashed could select someone as coarse and inexperienced as Donald Trump.
The miscalculation was that voters would embrace Ted Cruz on the notion its better to lose with Cruz than risk down ballot races. Voters tired of Washington's ways didn't agree. In fact both Trump and Cruz were running anti-DC campaigns.
It's only been a couple days since the upheaval, but it does look like a Mexican standoff between the standard bearer and those content to reboot for 2020.
