WDT: Council Gets Wobbyly Over Prospect of Two Layoffs

A proposed restructuring of the Fire Department was sprung on City Council but it looks like the plan to layoff two firefighters hit a dead end.  Lawmakers are unwilling to issue pink slips.
Meanwhile, last night Council reduced proposed  management pay hikes to 1.75% and seemed content to allocate enough fund balance to keep the levy increase in the two to four percent range. It is estimated some one half million of the fund balance allocated last year was unspent, according to projections.

Laying off employees while management gives themselves raises, hmmmm.

As much as I favor getting rid of the minimum manning clause in the contract I would not support laying anyone off. Getting rid of that wording alone you would think there would be an immediate decrease in the overtime expense. We need to stop paying people time and a half for just filling a chair waiting for a call out.
Any manpower reductions should be made through attrition.
It took a long time to get in the mess we are in with this and I wouldn't expect it to be righted overnight.

Remember when the raises were 2.5%? a bigger salary to start with, how about the board?

This is not the time to blink. Demote them, even if you need to keep paying them the same pay. It reinforces the fact of the city's position that we don't need them.

The vendetta that the city manager has against the fire dept becomes more obvious all the time.

City made huge mistake when they replaced Mary.

Time for Mayor and City Council to do their job.

Put the Taxpayers in front of the Fire Departments Bull-Shit.

Cut the Fire Dept and move on. They'll get over it.

8:37 Mary is part of why we are in this situation. Caving in to Union demands at the bargaining table was not looking out for the city's best interest.

Right on 837 Layoffs happened to them once, same with the WPD...Not a good sign for the rest of the unions.

Date a firefighter. Call out!

In Fishers Landing they are volunteers. That her model

Always the same blather...vote them out, hire/elect new, then the look back saying what a mistake we made...only the faces change. I personally want a mayor and council that will look at the facts, make talk to the parties involved and make sound decisions, leaving political ambitions out of the picture.

They spent over $200,000 on this crap already! Money that could have been the end of it all. They threw a grant in the trash. Again, it could have solved everything. One (new) guy voted to leave the tax cap alone. Smart man. The story about the three little pigs and the wolf, any one read it? There was no waffle house in that book. What was it that saved the pigs? Brick?

You don't need to lay them off if you lack the courage to do so. Just offer them a job in a another department.

Why is there no civil service test for the new position of human resource manager?

8:37, you are so full of crap. The City Manager is only doing what is in the best interests, long term, for the citizens. Unfortunately Sir, giving the firequeens more blank checks to pad their retirements and hire their friends is not good for us. It is you and your other clowns who have a vendetta against the CM. And who can blame you. The city manager has threatened your golden goose. You people make me sick.

When are cuts going to be made at the Police Dept.?

Anonymous said...

Sir city manager is only looking out for her pet departments. Sir

3:59 is on it, with exception of the name calling. And if the best you've got is saying cut the police department you're comparing apples and oranges.

The CM is just in over her head. It isn't her fault. She was selected by the previous council and they made a poor choice. She is doing her best but this is a difficult time in Watertown for politics and leadership with every decision being micromanaged on blogs or online news sites. She can't win no matter what she does. This blog certainly does not help her cause nor does Newzflunky.

I don't care for Joe Butlers tone since he has become Mayor. From his cavalier attitude about the waterfountain back to his use of the Fire Dept. during the election.

that is true 130,heck I thought he was going to ride a fire truck in a parade while holding a flag, mom and apple pie and their Dalmatian. After he won though,it is "well sorry boys, but some of you gotta go.." pretty shabby trick.

11:27 The city manager has no one to blame but herself. She is in a public position and running the city from the shadows. She is never available for comment with the media. She makes no effort at to be involved in this community at all. Hell, she doesn't even live here!

She also places way to much stock in the opinion of city attorney Mr. Slye. Who has been forcing his will on the public from an unelected and totally unaccountable position for years.

The council should take a hard look at the idea of getting a new City Attorney.
