Captains to be Crunched Get "The Letter" Soon

As notices are being readied for the eight fire captains being demoted to firefighter, the men involved face what no employee likes. Making less.
Even though they still will make $26.75 and hour plus steps, longevity and a thick benefits package, it's still about ten grand a year less. In the context of coworkers, friends and family, they surely will feel some level of embarassment at being "demoted", as achieving rank of any kind is a source of pride and status.
Some citizens say they are upset, others have said its high time the department was reined in.
The City launched a mini PR campaign designed to show how top heavy the FD is. It had an impact. Emotions are raw and it's by no means over.
Now a small course correction has been made, and for the gang of eight, they get to bear the brunt while all the other excesses in all the governments around us go on. Would anyone in Big Education  be asked to take a 16% pay cut to make a bloated system sustainable ?
City Council must achieve  a game changing CBA that challenges convention and must decide what the real agenda is here as reducing the current budget by one percent is hardly achieving "sustainability."
Both sides will have to decide whether the future is an innovative and frank bargaining process or just a continued lawyer full employment program.  Lawyers serve a function but usually make their living off the churn of human emotions and often leave the scene paid while the clients wonder what they got fot their money.

Embarrassment? If I were them I would be embarrassed in their current unneeded position and would feel a sense of pride at finally being in a job that the tax payers support. Its the difference between the feelings you get by cheating to win vs winning while playing by the rules.

Many in public higher education have been shifted from 12 to 10 month appoinments as a budget move .Their salaries were reduced 17 percent with a commensurate hit in benefits. This maneveur has been done at multiple locations and ussually affects administrators or support staff . If a person was needed and justified they MIGHT be hired back for a couple of weeks before semester start up , BUT only a small FRACTION of those in the reduction would be offered that option and it was usually rotated among them on an annual basis ,

So by way of example every "n" number of years one might pick up a couple of extra weeks work ABOVE the 10 month base salary .

So yeah this scenario is not uncommon and KEEPS people employed rather than undergoing an across the board RIF

730.. They are not embarrassed at all.. They dont care only about themselves. I think the city should also make it mandatory to live within the city limits.. Also to be done at negotiations. They rape us blind and they dont even live here. I say give those living outside the city a fair chance to get houseing within the city.. Say about three daYS.

It's wrong. said...

City Leadership is an Embarrassment. Or the lack of said. I respect these guys if they have the balls to stay on the job, and wait till the one term wonders are long time lost in the halls of time. Four years of being screwed my friends, and than you can put a guy or lady up for the Mayor. Next year you can help clean off two people who just have not been on the job as expected. Than maybe we can ask for another City Manager who wants to work with you , and us?

lol @ 10:12. where are the chiefs gong to go? Nowhere, that's where. There are not a lot of prison guard openings these days...assuming they could pass the test, they would have to go to Auburn or somewhere downstate. Other than that they don't have any options. The side job doesn't pay enough even if they do it all for cash and never claim a dime for taxes.

I love all the hate to people who have, through education and going through a system, now are losing income they thought was guaranteed. Listen, I am not saying the Dept. could use some trimming but this is far from over and this council and city will get sued. We can only hope that the CITY will start trimming, we get new blood at the CM position and city lawyer position and we can get to rebuilding faith in this community.

8:21, despite your efforts at bs, we all know no education hero has ever taken a pay cut. 12/10 month contracts have been around a long time. It NEVER costs anyone any money. Please keep your lies to yourself.

Funny with the education system the "extra snow days" are added onto the School vacations........

2:52 no lie at all these 17 percent pay cuts were made to several at various colleges i worked at and this was a REAL money and real benefit cut

,it is YOU who know NOTHING of this type of strategy l. Many of these folks took the cut and were initially dismayed but were still employed . SOme retired , others sought work elsewhere , BUT jobs were saved .

Please don't assume you KNOW what you DON't KNOW , it makes you appear ignorant .

9:58 Even the COW higher paid do not WANT to live here. I agree make it mandatory to reside and how about some community volunteering like Mary did. You lead by example.

I fully intend to make this a campaign issue next cycle ... it is the format: lack of City Council leadership and nastiness towards loyal fireman...

Demotions may be proposed for a number of different reasons, including poor employee performance, disciplinary actions, position elimination, or organizational restructuring.

It is painfully obvious to me and I hope to others that our elected officials and the City manager primarily do not even know what a Fire Captain does.

Fire Captain Duties and Responsibilities.

Also as in this case, a demotion like these 8 fire Captains can produce the opposite or untended results and here it's just to save $70,000.00 and sling around arrogant weight. Pitiful and disgusting.

5:52 should the COW have made lesser cuts to the other staff to get the tax levy to zero?

Just waiting for a decision to close the North-side fire station. We residents of the North-side pay our taxes just like everyone else but are usually the first ones to get screwed. First they closed our playgrounds, then a plan to close our schools, and now likely our fire station. No plans for the dilapidated colonial woodshed property, old CFM, Agway, or the old buildings where the salt pile was. Real quick to tear down the Edge tho. We have no supermarkets on this side of town anymore and crumbling streets. We feel like the city does not think we matter.

They would never do this to this in their own south-side neighborhoods but sure don't mind screwing us North siders. When will this end?? Time for some new blood.

5:52, this CAN happen a colleges. You never mentioned that before, conveniently. But education, despite the wet panties and the tears, is one of the most secure and well paid careers one can pursue. Especially in this part of the world. Grow up. Stop complaining. Quit lying. Get a mind of your own. For that matter, just pick one. And all those capital letters, used for emphasizing your propaganda while unable to use the language effectively. You really MUST be a teacher. I take it ALL back. YOU must be one REALLY smart dude. NOT too honest, but really SMART.

Danny, this already was a campaign issue. Try to keep up. The three who voted for cutting the fire department won by large margins. Do you ever get tired of being on the wrong side of every issue? Why are you hung up on the word "demotion"? Do you have a bad experience in your past you would like to share? This is pretty simple, the city doesn't need Captains. Instead of laying them off, they demoted them to a position they actually need. Win for the tax payers and a win for the captains. But a big loss for blank check unions and democrats.

The VERY first sentence : " many in public HIGHER education ...etc etc "

Guess you really are a dumbshit that doesn't understand that Public Higher Education means College and University level

So , Get yourself educated before you display your iignorance for all to see .

1:07 Tops is just too expensive and is too far away for many of us, especially those that don't drive anymore.. The IGA was a great store, was right across the street, and was not very expensive. Sure miss the IGA.

As for the Dollar General that is outside the city too. We used to have several stores over here. Sure can tell that you do not live on the north side 1:07. You are likely one of those that look down your nose at the working class and think you are better than us. We stick together over here. Shame on you.

Mr. Mayor:
You are still showing the Captains get a step and longevity. There is NO MORE longevity for the fire department people after the early 90's. A friend is one and he said he doesn't get longevity as that was NEGOTIATED away for a contract. Why don't they break that section too and pay them any way?? Why do some teachers supervise 28 children and others supervise only 6? I'ts because of the job and the requirements of their position, so sometimes, supervision really needs to be according to the responsibility. Nice article about Macaluso from the Times. She really is clueless and needs to vacate her position before she really runs the city in the ground. Maybe take some time for a business class so you can educate yourself on what really is going on and needs to be said, and what should be thought about or just kept in. The more you speak, the more the pubic knows how you really don't know.
