WDT:Floor Testing to Start as Some in Public Are Mad At City

I see testing will begin on the Arena floor to see what's up with cracks. On this blog and elsewhere, I notice there are lots of comments about Parks and Rec, the city manager and City Hall in general. Real antipathy and nasty comments in some cases.  Some I don't post as they are so personal and nasty.
Why is there such vitriol ?  Is it the fire talks ?  The other day, an industrial accident at the Arena had people chirping on the net. Hardly something that normally gets people riled.
With a new Council, I thought the discord would end, but from the comments I see, there are some angry people out there. Maybe it's just the fuel the Internet provides.

Blogs like this exist for the very reason you are now chastising people. Talk about an absurd observation or a self fulfilling objective. Maybe you just did't really think this one through ?

It is the fire talks, Jeff. The city has to reign in the overtime costs, and the firemen don't want to give up their money pump. Simple. So all we hear about is the safety of little children and old folks. All self serving bs.

Jeff some percentage of your readers do have a strong dislike for the current COW leaders. I do not recall such discourse in the 50+ years of living in the COW. We will have to wait for the next election to make any changes. The CM and council have circled the wagons and will not point fingers at each other. It would be interesting if someone did. They would receive my vote.

You are right, there is a lot of negative comments on this topic.
You have the normal amount of negative comments due to the tax payers objecting to the arena expense and the increase in the P&R budget.
And then you have a bunch more negative comments due to the fire department employees mistakenly believing that any dollar spent anywhere else, is a dollar in OT and pension padding they lose.

Majority of negativity is probably coming from a core group of 5-10 people, I'd wager. I've seen a lot of positive things going on with the city and am looking forward to the future.

Apparently 10:33 doesn't remember the days of Karl Amalon, Hillerman, griping about Labouf, Smith etc., complaining about Mary Corriveau, and yes, you too Jeff. Let's face it, Watertownians are a difficult bunch to please. Nattering nabobs of negativism.

9:47 hit it spot on. This blog promotes this negativity. I enjoy reading this and from my dealings with the aforementioned, I just don't think they are good faces for the city. They seemed very negative to me as well when my group in the past approached Parks about renting the arena. I am off point. I would like to agree with 11:35 but I don't think that's the case. I think a majority want new folks there and now may be the time with a new council, facilities, etc. But, this has been a sounding board, everyone including the owner has used this as an outlet to express their feelings. I am too a bit surprised with this observation.

One sure way to eliminate the trashy nasty posts you describe? Simply require names and NOT Anonymous monikers for posters. Hold them to account for their words - force them to be accountable for their words - make them ownership as they say. Call it being responsible on both/all sides. And, no, that's not communism - it's common sense ... want to trash someone, then do it like a man, or woman. Own your insults.

That or censure and censor posters ... that would be a dictatorship.

11:35 It was Jerry Hiller. I remember them all. They are no longer representing us. So do you agree the current leadership should meet their fate?

The current state of City Government is a sad state of affairs(no pun intended to recent dept. heads and their private love life) We have power hungary people at the top, We have a CM who can't seem to do anything right, We have a council who micro-manages everything, we have Dept. Heads who are sure their right, even though there not, and to top it off the JCIDA is embroiled in another Fiasco of the Donalds making, But at least the pension seeking Jay is not planning another slaughterhouse.

If you recall 2:36 they were not tossed out, they left of their own accord to take other positions, retire, or were voted out. I'm not ready to throw stones at a new council team 3-4 months in. I'll wait until the next election to decide if they did the job well. As for the CM, you'll never find one that all will be happy with. Read the blog posts. Too strong too weak, depends on the side of the issue you support.
Hey, Ross your hat in for mayor/council next go round, sounds like you know how things should run.

4:08 their contracts were not renewed or bought out like the case with Hiller.

The discord is due to the ice rink being built without the taxpayers consent. This could have been easily avoided.
The project should have been put on a ballot and voted. Instead it was forced down the collective city taxpayer's throat.

Some blame can be attributed to the council, but most belongs on you Jeff.

Danny, your posts are not anonymous most of the time, yet you still managed to make a nasty comment about the city manager and the NSA. So much for your theory of how to eliminate nasty comments.

But I understand your point of view. Its like when your side wants to modify Card Check law to require union votes to be taken in public instead of by secret ballot. You are endorsing the idea that commenters should be subject to the same extortion..."I see you voted against unionizing...that's a nice family you have...I'd hate to see anything happen to them".

6:48 - not nasty at all - a fact. In fact, but I'm not sure of her precise words, but when she was be vetted for the job she was asked about her managerial skills and experience at NSA that relate being a city manager ... she ducked and dodged and said she couldn't talk about it (paraphrased)... that was my point.

I don't know her personally, but her policy positions and approach to leading is awful. And yes, that is my view. Deal with it.

Update: I found the article - here is part:

In those 27 years at the NSA, she worked at Fort George G. Meade, Md., first as a technician/analyst and the last 15 years as a division chief responsible for overseeing programs in intelligence, she said.

Citing the secrecy of the agency, Ms. Addison said she could not provide any more details about her work there, repeating the same thing she told council members during her job interview: “To keep you safe at night.”

Ms. Addison, from Severn, MD, said she does not anticipate a difficult transition from working for the federal government to taking the helm at City Hall. She expects to be brought up to speed quickly on city issues and the inner workings of municipal government.

She was not ready then and is still not today in my view and she has the record to prove it.

Danny I am sure in your mind you make perfect sense.
But to ever normal thinking person, the only fact imbedded in your comment, is that your comments are nasty. Just because you signed your name does not make it any less nasty and just because it is your opinion does make it less nasty. Deal with that.

It is still America and we are entitled to our opinions as shown by this blog.

Danny is actually right on this issue, the current manager is the worst one we have seen in many years. No experience in municipal government, no experience on labor relations, no experience in anything it takes to lead a city. Her answer is hire consultants and lawyers and others to do her job. She does not listen to the taxpayers. Council needs to cut their losses and not renew her contract. Their is no direction on the council or at city hall, everybody is going their own direction and getting nowhere. The only chance the council has to get things righted around is get a new manager and regroup

Exactly and Danny is spot on with his 12:32 post. Time to make a move and reclaim this city!! We have a new council and now is the time to clean house...CM, city attorney, parks, etc..exciting times ahead, let's take advantage of them.

12:09 Unless there is some type of grass roots movement, poll, or an epiphany by the current council life remains the same. No wonder apathy remains high in COW.

Or, if you feel the city is run so poorly, has been for years, and there seems no hope for the forseeable future there are two other options. Run for office or move. Why would you want to live in such a fire, soon and gloom environment?
Have a feeling you'll find other cities face similar or worse issues. Grass isn't always greener.

Jeff how many running our city do not pay any taxes?

I do not live in other cities.
