WDT: Now It's News.....City Will Run Snack Bar

It's official and it's a banner headline front page above the fold. The City will operate the Arena concession stand. The media learned last Friday the City was seeking the Health Department permit on the day Councilman Cody Horbacz said it was common knowledge.
Yet for over a week the impression stood that users of the Arena would have to find their own vendor. I have had someone inquire whether I could help them sell food at a certain event, and I told them a week ago the City was doing it.
The notion of outside vendors didn't pan out. The democracy of the marketplace spoke and while I had said as much for some time, it's not a case of 'I told you so.' Yesterday while chatting with the Mayor, I complimented him on the decision to pass on the bids and move ahead with the current course.
The City is hiring part time people to staff the stand and will gradually enhance the menu over time. Other decisions can always be made in time, but for now a wise decision will result in the public being served and that's what comes first.

Jeff Graham will be running the new Grill at the new Arena's
Snack Bar.

Only TEMPORARY till Mayor Butler is TRAINED on what is HOT and what isn't.

Could this be a April Fools Joke ??

So far the new mayor is zero for everything.
It is time for the local republicans to clean house at our GOP headquarters. Why did they support this mayor? So the city could get into the snack business at a cost of hundreds of thousands? To use up what little productivity we get out of these city employees, on a snack bar. Brilliant.

Well the important thing is that Maggie's didn't get too good of a deal on something no one else would even bid on, save for a hotdog cart guy. This makes me want to buy up some of those zombi houses in the city. How could I lose, knowing that this idiotic council is in charge?

7:31AM, Great news! We live in a free country that allows anyone to run for office! Even armchair politicians such as yourself. So quit your bitching and put your money where your mouth is. Run for office. Then you can make all the earth-shaking decisions and show us Watertonians just how "brilliant" you are. Or not.

Same for 7:41...this council is cleaning up the mess from the old..give them a chance. As long as the Arena is in the news, that's a bad thing. When it stops making news, then, we know it's being ran the right way. Keep this in mind.

LOL...this council is driving people out of the city and keeping investors from buying the zombie homes and fixing them up.

8:30: request denied! Butler can keep doing stupid things and I will keep pointing them out here. But feel free to take your own advice and quit bitching about it when I point out that he is doing stupid things.

8-10 new employees??????????? How many employees does parks and rec have now? How many did they have 4 years ago?? I bet this would be interesting information

Hey 5:45 this has nothing to do with the old understaffed department of 5 years ago. It has to do with service to a public facility that administration fought not to be involved which prolonged the end results creating much more publicity than necessary. The previous administration fell behind, no missing money and at little cost to the tax payer. It's been 5 years and everything was back in order before the current administration took over. Several employees later, less work load, new equipment, and less participants served now so don't make an excuses or lay blame just let them run it and move on. However, they should seek professional advice so further blunders are not made. Council should taste the fries before the waste of monies spent. I think a community advisory committee would help do things right the first time, offer great ideas and help positive support what appears to be lacking now. We have a new facility suck it up and move on together. We have other things to correct in addition to the snack bar so let's all put our attitudes aside and offer support. I notice a door between the concession and skate room. So I have to wonder if this wasn't in the original plan so employees could do double duty between the 2 shops. If it was a private concessionaire the ability to enter shouldn't be there.

Butler actually was the sane one in the beginning of this debacle but fell prey to peer pressure and voted for this disaster. Now he has to clean up the mess with a staff that doesn't seem equipped to run a lemonade stand. I am not saying Mr. Butler is the all mighty but let's give him a chance to clean this up.

I believe the staff can make a go of it, they just need to be paid appropriately.

There is only one way to clean it up...rent the space to someone in the private sector.

It would be interesting to see a FOIL request so we could tally the countless hours of high level city employee time and legal expenses and staffing time, spent on this and anticipated to be spent on this.

I do not understand why Maggie's did not get it. Taxpayers are flipping the bill and deserve to know the rationale. How about it Joe?

7:45 you do not need to know!

Hey 503.....Yes he does and we all do, A employee was fired because certain City Council types wanted revenge, they refused to fund any more than two employees, The Person in charge was a "Director" the new person is a "Superintendent" The new Super has a car at her disposal, The previous Director was never allowed to go to Staff meetings, The previous director had his pay "cut" when the DPW Superintendent took over and created Parks&Rec/DPW The funny thing is when the COW sold the airport to the county, The DPW chief never gave up his 10K to run the airport..This questioned was directed to the Head of the City...The response was "Well what do you want us to do? Take it away from him"?

Q&A Time:

(1) Are current paid city employees going to flip burgers? If so, how much paid for the "outside job" and is that even legal?

(2) No conflicts here I guess? I mean with city business and city salaries and duties, etc. You know what I mean.

(3) What is the priority: City business or serving arena customers?

(4) Why can't we see a simple outline (bullet paper) that tells us the answers to these few questions, and I'm sure a lot of other related questions re: this mess?

(5) And, who will drive the clown car between City Hall and the Arena to meet the schedules. What are those schedules going to be anyway?

I'm asking these questions like any loyal, innocent, heavily taxed city resident bystander should be asking. After all, government is supposed to be about solving problems and not creating them, right?

Seems like a lot of people to run a part-time snack bar. I know that it is originally going to be summer help but what happens when the help goes back to school? This thing is a huge disaster!!!!!!!

I would love to know the real cost, 11M, 12M, 13M? What is none asking what the final tally was. Are they afraid of angering the taxpayers?

AS far at Ms. Gardner goes what do you expect when you go from arranging activities for folks in an old age home to being made a superintendent of a major municipal department? We seem to love putting unqualified people into important positions, guess they are easier to micro-manage.

Here is a unique idea, lets get qualified people who actually have a track record of doing what we are hiring them to do. The city is loaded is under qualified or completely unqualified people including our Clerk, City Manager, P&R Super, Civil Service Secretary and Events Coordinator. Time to get some quality for our tax dollars.

You see 359 in the COW it's who you're connected with, and if you're a friend of a friend...........well you get the idea, The old age home wasn't that owned by a local economic development czar? And working in a Dr.'s office is important too..
