Firefighters Union: "We're Not Asking For a Blank Check" | WWNY TV 7

The Mayor says he is their friend....but for smoke eaters  its a case of 'with friends like that , whe needs enemies ?'
Mayor Joe Butler's interview on TV 7 got a quick response from the head of the union representing City firefighters
The back and forth is joined and now the public can hear both sides without hiding everything behind closed doors or hiding behind out of town lawyers representing both sides.
The Mayor is an able spokesperson for management. Let him make the case and create the pressure to see his view prevail.

No firequeens, you are not asking for a blank check. You are only demanding that the city continue to fund your overtime/retirement slush fund in a manner in which you have becomed accustomed. We all feel your pain. I have a better idea. You guys are so good at crying, why don't you just carpool to the fire and snuff it out with your tears.

The Mayor is also, and most important, the voice for the pubic, for all the people in the city, and not just those who voted for or supported him.

Right now he is dividing key elements.

Funny, after listening to Dougherty on the Live@Five show I thought it sounded like that was exactly what the fire dept was looking for.
He complained about everything except the color of the building.

What I don't understand is that if these fire people are so unhappy with the equipment, working conditions and the city's management of expenditures, if this makes their lives so unbearable, then why do they not move on? Seek employment elsewhere.
Oh yeah, I remember, it's because they are unionized, they have the right to tell the employer how to run the business.

I think the time is long passed for the city to look at contracting out the staffing at the fire barn. They may be surprised at how much could be saved and how much more control they could have over the dept. No more tail wagging the dog.

They are right. There is no blank check, but not filling positions only creates more overtime, say it as you will, but it a safety issue. You see several National Grid employees on one job and wonder why, but its a safety issue for them too. Everyone has a job and that type of work cant be done with fewer, say what you want.
As for the number of calls, ask the ones who have been saved by fire members because of quick actions and responses. Guilfoyle supports the fire department helping with medical calls because they are extra hands and "YOUR" tax dollars pays the fire department members to be there for you. We crabbed when the curb side trash pick up was taken, then the blue stickers were put on us, then the playgrounds closed, now the pool, arena, and other things we pay for in our taxes that have been taken away. You can't play with protection so lets stop the bickering and work out a way to keep us all safe, and respect them for doing the job.

Dannie, when the mayor represents the citizens and the firemen represent themselves, uh, yup, there is going to be a "divide". I can't believe you write this stuff.

If overtime is a safety issue as yu say then its time to go to eight hour shifts and possibly per deim employees who would get paid if called into duty... Hospitals have a lot of employees working as such and they deal with many more employees than fireman.. Also safety risks would also include second jobs.. If a fireman is off he should be off, not working another job. Seems like the safety issue is just a bit of a stretch...

1:27 is spot on !!!

The union representative keeps lying and the local media keeps swearing to it. A blank check is exactly what the union wants. They want to dictate how many extra staffing positions the city must keep per shift and whatever it costs is of no concern to them and they will just fill in the number on the check to pay for it.

Butler is exactly right. Being a friend to these childish union complainers does not mean giving them everything they want. That would be how you raise spoiled brats that no one likes. Butler is doing the fire department a favor by attempting to right-size them. If they would quit with the drama and complaining and just work with the tax payers on a compromise, the ones remaining would get a lot more respect and job satisfaction.

Why should respect them to do their job?????????? Who in the hell do they think they are. Its a city managers job to see that safety is covered and also her job to keep the budget in tact/ Politicans get us in these binds... Whenever they gave this mandated a go they the council said oh good a noncost item that will make us look good and it will be someone elses nightmare. Cut the dept.. If they dont like it tell them to join the rest of us waiting tables or go back to farming.

@ 12:49 if you had a brain you wouldn't know what to do with it. Let me set you straight brain dead, you talk about overtime/retirement slush fund tells me you work a job you don't get either. As far as the overtime goes that is because the city manager cut 3 positions and that creates the overtime. With the cut of 3 more positions, overtime will increase which the idiot manager even said in her brain dead budget. If they put the 3 firefighters back on and even added more there would be no overtime at all PERIOD! With a retirement fund, every government employee gets one, it's part of the job, so if you want to complain, complain about the other city employees like the city manager who doesn’t need a retirement fund or even a job. You sound like a real a**hole with your firequeens and your other talk. It seems you’re a little b*tch who hides behind an anonymous posting and not telling who you really are so someone can punch in your face.

@ 1:27 I guess you never worked for a place that wouldn’t allow you to purchase decent equipment. You’re most likely an old feeble minded jerk who can’t call them firefighters not “fire people” and your comment fire barn shows your brain has gone the way of the Edsel.

@ 2:20 your brain has leaked out your ear stay off the internet. 1st you can’t spell you’re so idiotic, and you have no idea about their shifts. You say they should do 8 hour shifts; they want to do 24 hour shifts to save tax payers money. Don the firefighter gear and let see you talk that link of crap again after you’re in a fire and your dealing with your life. If they want a 2nd job, which DPW and the police do, then what is wrong with that? Having less firefighters on the job is a safety issue, but you wouldn’t know that since you’re NOT a firefighter

@ 2:41 The union doesn’t want a blank check, they want enough firefighters to do their job safely, correctly and without risking their lives because the high paid city manager wants to make more money for herself. Butler and all the clowns who have NEVER EVER! been a firefighter has no idea how many firefighters there should be. The NFPA mandates the minimum required to do the job without killing the firefighters and being able to save people and put out the fires. Not one true Watertown city tax payer has said jack about the cost of the fire department since they all know they want their houses saved if there is a fire or their lives saved.

@ 2:51 your stupidity is showing. You’re another one who can’t spell, get a damn dictionary clown. You say if they don’t like it join the rest of us who wait on tables or go back to farming. That sounds like you are someone who couldn’t get a job other than waiting on tables because your IQ is too low. If you had any intelligence you would know these firefighters are highly trained and skilled people who undergo extensive training to do their job very well with their hands tied behind their backs with the low staffing that is being done. If you don’t like how the firefighters want the proper staffing to do THEIR job, then why don’t you crawl back under the rock you came from and leave the jobs that take brains to the real people.

As far as anyone else who decides to spew garbage out your hole, don’t. You don’t have the intelligence to even make a statement without sounding stupid. If you think you can do the firefighters jobs, then by all means we can set you up with the gear and throw your ass into a burning building and tell you to save someone and put the fire out without letting the person die, losing the house or dying yourself. I can guarantee 100% you will not save the person, the house will be dust and you will die in that fire. And this call out goes to anyone who thinks they can hold their own in a fire including the current mayor, the city council and that useless city manager, you talk a good talk, but let’s see your ass cash the checks your mouth writes, not one of your cowards will do it not one.

As you can see from 1:51's comment, after the firequeens have been drinking, they can't help but speak their minds.
Their true nature comes out.
They tell the tax payers they want to punch them in the face. And lecture with sanctimonious anonymous hypocritical BS, trying to defend the indefensible.
Gimme ! gimme ! gimme !!!
"we want 24 hour shifts and we want it for You the tax payer!"
Yeah right.

Lisa Posted at 1:51am Sunday. I think someone may have been doing shots. Probably Fireball! LOL

I think you're mistaken Lisa Adams. Bottom line is I'm a taxpayer and the firemen work for me. I think they are gaming the system. Appreciate the Mayor and Council standing up together and saying enough!

1:51, sober up. Your rant shows you for what you are. Just keep the name calling thing, as your own words make you look like the greedy firequeen cling-on you are. The fire budget is the biggest part of the city budget. With a 12% tax increase on the table it is reasonable to look at savings in that area. Grow up.

At least Lisa has the Ba*ls to actually identify herself. So much hatred gets spewed on this site under the title "anonymous" that it can be refreshing to see someone stand behind their words. While general comments can legitimately be made anonymously, I feel that if you are going to spew hatred and criticism you should at least be willing to stand behind what you have to say. Will you do the same 1039. Or should I say Bart?

11:02 you are dumb enough to ace the fire fighter civil service test. Lisa did not identify herself. We don't know which fire fighter he...er I mean SHE is. There are so many that live outside of the city, its hard to keep track of which ones live in Adams.

Just remember when the cuts are made and the budget is out of control next year that WFD did their share. Who's next?

Dear Lisa Adams, I would like to throw a nugget or maybe a spark in your pile of bile. Why go half way in stirring the boiling pot, let's get some affirmative action going on within the fire dept.like NYC. When a female gets over seven times to pass the physical test to make the esteem NYFD and can't pass we look the other way and the taxpayers are forced to pay for her fat a##, what say you? I want to know how many women are on the WFD and how often should the firefighters have to pass a physical test. When overweight people can't physically perform the job pulling the hoses, carrying the people, up and down the truck everyone is put at risk.

Taxpayers deserve the best and should have a say in negotiations, the days of overtime simply for beefing up ones pension are long gone. We, your neighbors can't afford to pay your early retirement benefits after 20 or 25 years when you are only in your late 40's or early 50's many of which we know. The present and future contracts are unsustainable and look what you are doing to your children and grandchildrens' future. This is all about the greedy me public servant generation.

8:15 ever get chased by a WPD? Let us include all.

Anonymous said...

8:15 Don't expect an answer right away!
You're probably going to have to wait until she has another night of heavy drinking with her fireman partner to start running her filthy mouth again.
She sounds like she is too young to understand that the residents are being taxed right out of their homes and too stupid to care.

A Bernie voter if I've ever heard one.

Hey 815 taxpayers have a right to know whats going on, but contract negotiations are usually done in executive session, But remember who you elect there the key......Of course you are quiet when it comes to things like PILOTS....Remember Maple Courts.? Never paid tax, and was given 200K in CDBG....So lets look at the complete picture on what it all means..

There is a high ranking official who may be a heavy drinker that had the WPD blotter expunged. Jack says you can not handle the truth.
