Illinois Senator Strays off the Reservation

Every wall develops a crack or two. So it is with this Supreme Court nomination where not every GOP Senator is comfy with refusing to hold hearings and vote on Merrick Garland.
Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois is one of the Senators with skin in the game as his seat is up this year and  that's why Mr. Kirk now says his colleagues should "man up" and vote on the nominee and explain their vote. He says that's there job.
The reason is voting no is not so easy, especially if in open hearings Justice Garland performed well.
Republicans have taken the stand the public should decide on the nominee, but the public never does. That's not how it works and the notion a President in his last year cannot nominate is antithetical to the Constitution.
If we want the public to decision, let's elect our Justices.

Only party line voters pay attention to this stuff.

Republicans are in a tough spot. Senator Kirk is a Republican in the Democratic-leaning state of Illinois. Kirk has desperately calculated he can attract more moderate Democratic votes than he would lose conservative Republican votes. There are several Republican Senators in this situation. The decision by Republican Senate leaders not to hold hearings puts these at-risk Senators in a real bind.

Also, these leaders have reassured members that Merrick Garland, President Obama's moderate SCOTUS nomination, could be confirmed in a lame duck session if a Democrat win the White House. I understand President Obama may pledge to withdraw Garland's nomination if a Democrat wins the White House. This would leave his successor to nominate a more liberal judge likely to be confirmed by a Democratic-controlled Senate, using the Republican argument of "letting the people decide." In my view, Republicans need to quickly hold hearings and confirm Garland to mitigate the already irreparable damage they have done to their once grand party.

Nah, one more softball playing lesbian and many of our rights will be gone. The Republicans are doing what they should, and what Democrats themselves advocated when things were reversed. The only people who cry about this are Dannie and NY44inDC. That should tell you something. And spare us the BS NY37 about the damage done to the Rep party. Don't get too confident. Only people like you listen to the media barrage.

Kirk is in a tight race to keep his seat ... running against DEM Tammy Duckworth, who lost her legs in 'chopper while flying combat mission in Iraq - currently in the House since 2013 ...

Kirk has insulted her several times and now seeks votes anywhere about anything like a junkie needing a quick fix.

She probably will win and I hope she beats him badly .... and rightly so.

Commie in lala land has a good point. As long as you live in his fantasy land.
But back hear in reality....the voters don't give a rats ass about the Court and don't even know what it means to confirm a judge. The safe choice for those republicans senators in the purple states, is to call for a vote. They won't lose a single conservative vote for doing so, but they will keep the democrats that are not party line.
