WWNY: Tour Next Week of Arena Will Focus on Food

Three unnamed entities interested in putting their name on the Fairground Arena and a struggle over whether to have a concession stand or a snack bar. It all took up half the time at last night's Council meeting.
The media keeps reporting the City wants to hire a vendor to run the food outlet, but that's not my understanding. They are not hiring anyone. It's a plan to rent out the space to a private business or person.  No one seems interested with all the uncertainties and the best prospect continues to be the City operating the stand as it did with a small profit before the facility closed for renovations.
City staff doesn't want to be involved with the snack bar or handling money although two retirees who worked the stand told me last night they'd love to come back.
Plans to renovate the proposed area to provide more food options are on hold till Council tours the facility next week.
Naming the Arena is a tussle lawmakers don't need.  This facility needs to roll out as an asset to the community long term.  Slapping a car dealer's name on it means the people who paid for it won't have a sense of ownership and the pride that goes with it.

Addison/Gardner must not have children in sports or do not support their school. Youth sports would not survive without the cash made from concession stands. Pop Warner teams I coach make generally $400 or more in 4-5 hours. No we do not charge admission. Please get rid of these over paid staff. Secondly department heads wrote grants for the COW before Addison took over.

I hear Trump is eying it. Bobby Trump from Plessis.

The council did make known last night that they want Watertown included in the naming, regardless if there's a corporation with naming rights.
Liking the way Mayor Butler is handling the dog park issue. For that matter, all council laid it on the line. No reason for them to entertain that dead issue week after week when there's important business to be handled.

Name the ice---with a logo underneath. Not the arena itself.
Clayton does!

I hate to see a sponsorship being bashed. It would bring the loan burden down. I just hate to see that being thought of as a bad thing. Not really selling anything that the people own. Just taking away from the people's burden. The Fair Grounds have always been in one way or another connected to Duffy. He doesn't own it. But he sure supported it well over the years. A naming is just support. Sorry if it doesn't come out that way. I don't see anyone wanting to say naming it means ownership.

Thanks for the input Ray. It really means a lot.
Let's just put it over here I this nice round file.

Let the people of Watertown decide. Put it to a public vote. Same thing with the water fountain. Sorry you don't like the fountain Mayor Joe, but let the people of the city decide it's fate. We paid for it after all. Put it to a public vote. Within every mailing of our tax and sewer/water bill have a section for people to vote on current issues. So when the bill is paid each vote can be counted and submitted.

That coffee brew girl once against has showed the most common sense on this issue. She said something to the effect that sure they would sell the naming rights if they got enough to make it worthwhile.

Actually, the coffee girl looks really out of her class here. Follow this. You want a company, a business, to name the arena after them to "offset" the construction costs. What it the "said" value to these naming rights? From very afar, it looks like this to me and please correct me if I am wrong. We (the city) screwed up on the costs, the overages, etc...so please, please...some local business step up and cover for us regardless if you get anything back for this said "naming rights." It's called sponsorship/advertisement, not a donation because this whole project was a mess from the start and now we need some local to bail it out. Not really the best marketing scheme we have going on here.

Becoming more and more obvious why we have a new mayor. The old mayor wanted everything his way including his health insurance for working full-time, going to events, parties and social gatherings, oh and don't forget being on the clock while being a bar fly at Pete's!
Thank you Mr Butler for looking out for the taxpayers dollars.

The coffee brew girl made sense???? where is her business right now????
Closed and not supporting the city. Just saying. That's why she has no real answers worth anything which support what her constituents think. She is way out of touch, and definitely lacking in the common sense theme..

4:11, Just saying? No, you are implying. You attack the only person on the council who built and ran a business and CHOSE to close it, not because she had to, but because she was ready to.

Carrier dome is named after a company and no harm came from it. And Carrier did not pay even 10% of the cost of the dome. You wish it had been called the alumni dome or the student tuition dome? You are ridiculous and naive.

Do you think all these companies that make donations and raise money for dog parks and such, are doing it because they are philanthropists? No ! They do it for their own public image and because it is good for business. These companies make a lot more profit than they donate and if they wanted to be charitable they could be much more so than they are.

The Brew Ha closed because it wasn't making enough money to bother keeping it open. I challenge Ms. Macaloso to show her books to any prospective buyer. I have yet to hear that she has.

Coffee girl and common sense...no way, those two things have never been seen together. She is clueless!

Right back at you 5.20. I at least tried to put something up for grabs. Gee why do I answer you? I won't again. It's a waste of time. Back to my lunch.
