Patty to Poor: No Lobster on Your Plate | WKYC.com

Senator Ritchie is getting a lot of press over a bill she proposed to make sure welfare recipients don't get to eat steak or lobster on their EBT cards. She wants other "junk food" cut out too.

When I go to the Nice n Easy next time, I'll have to look what's in the EBT cooler planted in front of the door.

Just lay off the subs. They are a popular item the first of the month.

No food stamps for steak or lobster, NY bill says | WKYC.com

Just don't restrict my cigarettes and scotch!

Have they nothing better to do than legislate types of usage.

Better to strip State pensions from convicted felons, reduce pension benefits in general.

Gee, I hope that new council person who happens to work for the good senator doesn't get caught in the middle of pattyplate-gate.

"At a time when our state and nation are struggling with an obesity epidemic, it is critically important that taxpayer-funded programs help low-income consumers make wise and healthy food choice….,"

So thoughtful.

So then, the taxpayer salaried Ms. Ritchie thinks steak and lobster are UN-healthy food choices. That’s interesting, especially since I spotted her going through the checkout line at our local price chopper a while back with a couple of thick juicy steaks.

What about hot dogs, are hot dogs a healthy food choice Patty? Spam?
For that matter, what about Patty Cakes? You know, the kind made from dog food. Are you okay with that?

What a joke.

I work with the elderly, in which most of the ones I work with get some food stamps. Trying to keep the cakes, cookies, and ice cream off of their grocery list is next to impossible. In a bit of their defense, ALL humans need some sugar in their diet. Since there are so many that receive food stamps, Little Debbie may not like the outcome.

If there is a protocol, follow it.

How about our tax dollars going to legislators like Sen. Ritchie, et al, for them to use to travel to junkets where I am pretty sure steak and lobster and many more goodies of the "junk food she labels" is served and used to to wine and dine them for shall we say "quid pro quo" that is legislation favorable to the menu providers in return for the "research trips" right? Um ... damn the silence is deafening isn't it?

Take a family of four or five and they may get five or six hundred a month while on assistance. Now we are going to tell them what they can eat.. Leave it to Ritchie to try and get some headlines.. Half of her home area is on assistance of some sort and all she can do is attempt to restrict their diet... Looks good in the Journal for her elite group she runs with but really... Why not vote against tax increases for people making $250,000 Patty.. Not many in your district making that.. Most of us dont have Felons we have to follow and worship people like Skelos and LIbeos who stole from all of us.. Why not vote against tax increases every time they come up Patty .. Why not get rid of the Authorities and excess fat in our government Patty.. Why didnt she help the people in Massena.. Instead stayed in the background and then attempted to take some headlines...
Lets take a long long long look at Ritchie and her record and it dosnt take much sense to ralize she represents the rich and special interests in our area not us.

I heard you talking to Samantha today. You are a media genius, the way you interviewed her with some goodhearted ribbing but mostly just shrugged your shoulders at her response, as you peeled back the layers and exposed the secrets of the EBT lifestyle. Cutting edge real-time investigative journalism.

Then I heard some sanctimonious golf course guy call in, to lecture us about how bad the most popular Senator ever to hold the office is. And also to put down all republicans for wanting to limit benefits to essential items instead of luxury items.

I can respect the mayor's "so what who cares, I don't mind paying for their enjoyments" attitude, but I can't respect anyone who calls the rest of us heartless.

If a family works and still is in the poverty level they qualify for food stamps.. Do they have to give up their dignity also?? Yes says Patty Ritchie and the Republican Senate.. They get xxxx no. of dollars monthly because its the law and they qualify for the assistance. Now they need attention getting politicans harping at them about how to spend it??

What about gruel, is gruel okay?

Please Patty, may I have some gruel?

There sure are a lot of libtards that took the time to make stupid comments on this story. Its pretty simple, the safety net is supposed to be for essentials, not luxury. Let them use their other money to buy the treats, the cigarettes, the lottery tickets and the energy drinks.

Good for Senator Ritchie and tax payers.

People don't mind helping others out, they just don't want to be taken advantage of.

Be grateful for what you get.

“Cutting edge real-time investigative journalism.”

Is that what you call it? Good one. Have you given any thought about pursuing a career as a comedian?

You can always throw in a couple of golf course jokes.

Here’s one: Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course -- the distance between your ears.

Ba-dum-bum-CHING…….

Who cares what they spend it on,does it really matter what the actual list is?They can spend five bills on steaks or salad,it all comes to the same amount, let them at least eat okay for a few days as the rest of the month is probably beans and soup from the food pantry.

6:33pm ... If Patty wants to purchase steaks, so be it ... at least she as A JOB and an INCOME to pay for them ... she's not sitting on her couch or front porch munching bags of potato chips all day.

I have been really irritated in a checkout line watching the young woman in front of me with a cart FULL of food ... steaks, 4 BAGS of shrimp, etc. Mind you ..the people with an EBT card or WIC coupons don't buy store brand/cheaper products .. it's Tropicana orange juice or JIF peanut butter ... the stuff I cant afford while working 45 hours a week, owning a home, with utilities and taxes to pay.

Steak and shrimp are "luxury" food ... you won't find any in my house.

Honestly, please: most on SNAP (food stamps) are low-income working people with kids who just happen to be low-income and on the edge.

Fraud, okay, it does exist, so nail them and the sellers. Just stop the attacks on the needy with a wide paint brush ... no sin in being low-income and working two jobs. ... go ahead and try it sometime w/o any public assistance.

The word public means us all doesn't it?

1001 and 1005 are brain dead.. Must be Republican like Patty and never had to use an assistance program.... Actually 1001 and 1005 are the same person so we know its brain dead.

IF fraud exists, Dan?

Food Stamps and Welfare cards are currency. They are used to buy drugs, companionship, booze, gasoline, and movie tickets. Maybe not directly, but they can be traded for any product or service. I'm not sure how we can dictate how this currency is spent. What we should do is maintain the integrity of how benefits are provided, and find better ways to help people get off these programs and fend for themselves. I'm not surprised to hear 12:51 defend the status quo, per se, as welfare and food stamps are the main accomplishment of his Liar In Chief. More people than ever before are on food stamps. But we are lied to and told the economy is improving and unemployment is down. You can't make this stuff up. Unless you're a part line Democrat.

I don't usually agree with Danny on most issues but he is spot on here. Is this really that big of an item? Obviously not if it is sponsored by our Heuvelton rep. To this day I still believe she is the most underqualified senator to ever grace the state...and I am a republican.

9:19, No one has suggested limiting EBT cards for only purchasing gruel. There are countless things on the grocery store shelves that would still qualify for EBT card purchase by the Samantha types. Pretty much everything that normal weight people eat, would still qualify.

We are missing the big picture here, and that is that we are exporting our high paying jobs, factory work, etc to third world countries to benefit the companies and their high dollar execs and stockholders. No wonder people have a hard time making ends meet working two or three low wage jobs, instead of the good jobs our parents had.Fix the damn job problems and then no need to worry about what people on welfare are spending their grocery money on.

Why stop there? How about no tattoos for people on assistance. And no pets or cable tv. No netflix either and they have to sell their flat screen. Sorry, better trade in that smartphone for a basic flip phone too

WHY are you always poking fun and being so insulting to Samantha??? Just because you can?? It makes you look like a schoolyard bully.

Don't pretend to care about her well being when you don't hear from her only to sound/act so condescending to her on the air when she does call.

5:33 and 10:12 you are both so RIGHT.
The mayor was way off.. because when they spend their (our) money on the junk things and quickly, then who pays now? We do again, and so do their children who didn't benefit for what it was intended for. Now the Salvation army is taxed and Urban mission who basically get raped because they cant afford food at the market because they spent it on beer, soda, chips or whatever else they should be able to. WE are not judging or telling them what to do with their money, but with our money, I believe they can, and if they don't like it, GET A JOB!!!! Raise their own money and buy what they want. One of the only free things we should include with the EBT is a birth control shot which should be mandatory. Again, if we are going to support them, we should support them by not adding to their burden and help them get on their feet. Its certainly not help by having more kids, but it does give them a bigger tax return for more of our money which they get taxes for. The more we give the more they get, and the elderly who have worked and struggle on Social Security which they already paid for, is getting the raw end of the deal.
The poor person who loses their job is on unemployment and has to show effort of trying to find a job each month and its limited to their assistance, why should this be any different. Show effort to find a job and its all good.
As for the phones, any recycled phone is good to call 911 with in an emergency even without a plan. Why cant they have those phones to be used for emergencies only..
I was amazed at the lines for the free phones, but if you had a job fair the next day, the line would be so very different.

Danny no one wants to hurt the people who need help. I get what you say about being on it as a kid. I am sure at one time or another till my mother got her degree and two jobs we got help too. But it isn't these people who piss us off. It's the 24 year old girl with two kids from two different dad's. In a Mart at night buying blunts to smoke with guys from said Mart. Yes I heard this girl asking guys in the Mart to all buy blunts, bring them to her place, and she had the goodies. Her kids were in bed, no big deal. She looked like she was strung out big time. She sure wanted everyone to show. Went home. She looked like a stray cat. Gross. Danny she needed the card taken away.

Let's put a finer touch to this, shall we if that's even possible with the nasty partisanship sailing around here:

Call it a return to "The Myth of the Welfare Queen back in vogue I see.

Please show statistics wherein show EBT cardholders are more obese or downright fatter that “normal” folks. BTW: our tax dollars go to Albany for legislative junkets to wolf down and enjoy steak and lobster dinners for big favors from “fat cat” (no pun intended) donors for favors and bills that favor them across a wide range of issues – the least of which is obese citizens with EBT cards who need I remind anyone are mostly low-income WORKING people with families who just happen to be low income and in need of help.

The average SNAP (food stamps/EBT) per month per person in NYS is less than $140.00 ($138.78 to be precise).

Related to this here >>> http://kff.org/other/state-ind...

and here >>> http://www.benefits.gov/benefi...

As for me, I am sick and tired of people who are low-income working families that need help to live and subsist (with EBT for food) getting the crappy end of the proverbial stick. A majority if not all low-income working people use public assistance from time-to-time ... since when is it a crime to be poor or low-income and needing help. This is a non- issue in my mind. If there is fraud (and I know there is some) then nail those abusing EBT/SNAP and also the retailers looking for easy sales.

I hope there is a huge backlash over this asinine ploy by Sen. Ritchie and others, and no, before anyone says otherwise to bash me, this is not me as a DEM speaking out against her a GOPer. Politics should not be part of this debate, period.

You want logic? Okay, give each Albany legislator an EBT card, take away their annual salary and see how they live from week-to-week. Then report back to the public and let us know - okee dokee?

Anonymous said...

3:37 is spot on!
These people buying the high dollar food items are simply filling the order that was placed for about fifty cents on the dollar.
This is how the EBT card is turned into cash!
Happens all of the time.

Danny no welfare queen in my book. What do we really need from Richie's plan? Education. People who know why they are on the program, how to use it correctly, and guidelines that make life better for kids who have to be raised on it. I had plenty of friends in school who had the shame every day of being on welfare. Kids who had nothing while their dads drove all over drinking at bars, running with women, and just having a great time. Their mothers didn't do anything to make it better. They just let it go on. Now we have several women who have no idea about getting married, having a household, and or taking care of the kids. It's just a me generation. Many look for their parents to buy them out of everything. Add the fact that dads now a days just don't always want to step up and take care of the kids. They are fine with the state collecting a monthly check from them, and no real care of the child. It started back when I went to high school in the early 80s. Men were back from the various wars, messed up, and really didn't give a crap anymore. Look around today. Many of these guys are in the same boat. Nothing is being done. Women are not smart enough to not play along with it. Think about it. That's the sad in this world. Mom cares nothing for the kids and dad is the same. That is what needs to be fixed Danny.
