WDT: Council; No Fries, But Maybe a Prayer

After pondering the costs, City Council did an about face and decided informally to leave the new Arena concession area as is and try to bid it out with no minimum bid required.
During discussions Tuesday evening, there were differences and one member is said to have wanted the City to continue to operate it, as it had done in past years.
WDT Photo Shows Concession Stand As It Nears Completion

Spending a lot of money for someone else to run a business didn't seem to make sense but Council seems unwilling to buck staff desires not to run a snack bar or anything more elaborate.
I would presume whoever is picked would have to execute a lease with some kind of rent schedule.   It's been interesting, the lack of editorial commenting on this matter and that may be contributing to indecision. The only public input has been Jay Donovan, who takes a critical view of anything Arena.
Council also revived a parternship with Neighbors of Watertown and DANC to rehab some houses acquired through taxes, as opposed to selling the houses at auction.
Lawmakers also heard a proposal to replace the moment of silence at the beginning of the meeting with prayer from local clergy who would rotate through meetings. The reciting of the Lord's Prayer was ended in 1991.
          Amen.

The Arena issue is a joke no leadership from the Mayor that's not there, Cody had some good points, didn't make sense to put that much money into the project and skimp on the Food Part. I see the partnership with NOW is approved, should have sold the houses at public auction. NOW has a scam going where religious groups help fix the place, He then finds someone to buy it, and he gets a first time homebuyers grant, and FREE money from DANC think about it...

"staff desires not to run a snack bar"

Wish I worked where I could tell the boss where to stick it if I didn't want to do something!

What a bunch of fools. The zombies from the walking dead have more sense than these ass clowns. 10 million bucks and you can get a pop corn & coke. idiots

If current city staff doesn't want the responsibility, fire em and get some people in there who aren't afraid to work.

We've been seeing more and more responsibilities being outsourced. Time to put the brakes on the gravy train and tell these people to GET BACK TO WORK.

Enlisting divine guidance may be the Council's only hope of finding direction.

And Jay is right on this one...which pains me to say. I saw the rent prices. The folks putting those numbers together have no idea about food cost, labor, insurance, etc...Either do it right or don't do it at all. Pepsi or coke can put in vending machines if push comes to shove. We need to evaluate that whole operation over there.

I think its a good move not to throw any more money into this place , put Drink And Food Machines in and the city will receive a cut from the vendor. This place will never pay for itself or even break even so lets concentrate on getting a few paying tenants in the place and move on to other city business.

Question to the former Mayor or other beer vending expert:

Why cant alcohol sales be included in the concession stand, at least for special events (i.e. beer league hockey)? Is there a stand law, or liquor authority, or local law preventing such a function.

Congress has an "opening prayer" at the start of each session and look how f**ked up they are - ouch ...

I see no need for this whatsoever here, period. It actually is offensive to even propose it ... why?

It is highly unlikely that City Council would call in an Muslim cleric to open a session, right?

That could happen, Danny, if Barack had some open time after he leaves office and comes up for a visit...

The parks and recreation department wasn’t created to run a concession stand. Their employees shouldn’t be made to run it either. If the city wants them to operate it, the city should hire employees who have prior skills doing such a job.

Glad someone is trying to do something with the dumps her in the city. Now to get rid of the slumlords especially the absentee landlords.

As far as prayer at a Government meeting, inside a Government building, it doesn’t surprise me that these clowns would violate the law that separates church from state. The fact that every judge sits in front of an illegal sign that reads in God We Trust, the illegal act of having anyone swear on a Bible, both of which violate the law, and is offending to those who don’t believe in that stuff, those who don’t use a Bible but use the Torah or Koran or even the satanic bible. I think the Supreme Court needs to order that stuff be stopped and all signs and bibles be removed. Besides, it’s ignorant to sit as a false judge, in front of a sign that states God, when their own Bibles states no one can judge anyone but God, unless you want to be punished yourself.

Sharon hired the director. Reduce her pay; fire or council should reprimand CM. How stupid of me, CM has 4.0 passing grades by council. She must have graduated from SUNY

3:13 - " the city should hire employees who have prior skills doing such a job." They did not do that with respect to the current supervisor. Why start now???

It's wrong for you to insinuate on your radio show that the current council is to blame for these problems and express they are wrong to do things the way they are ...

Maybe they are wrong - but you and others were part of the original architect hiring, planning and decision making on this project. The former council hired an architect that failed to deliver at a very expensive cost. that is not the current council's fault. The former council decided to put out to bid, at the decided rate with the restrictions and conditions, the concession stand. That is not the current council's fault.

To me, it looks like they are trying to resolve issues that have been left in their lap to satisfy the irate taxpayers. They should speak with a McDonald's, Burger King, etc franchise holder and see if they would be willing to open a satellite restaurant at the arena. To end up with only chips & soda at this expensive new arena is insulting.

Who really cares that much about the concession portion of the arena? How many complaints has parks and rec received about food quality in the past? We like to beat issues to death in Waterown. Make a decision and move on. If this is editorial material we really are living in Hootersville.

Incidentally, if "das hoot" is really as inconsequential as you regularly spout, Jeff, why should we be dependent on an editorial to help make a decision on a concession stand?

I have seen the rec. staff flipping burgers for their lunch at the arena on the outside grill. Someone must have trained them. The water dept. cooks outside on the island during dredging operations with equipment bought by the COW. The sewage plant cooks outside just as the water dept. Fire dept. cooks for themselves. I don't get it.

Good Point 657 some of the finest cooks are employed by various City Dept's ........T.J at the FD, Tony at the Water Dept......But 657 the Fact that the COW bought the equipment for dredging operations was because they were told they couldn't leave for lunch, or potty breaks...............We all know what happened there.......

I propose a citizens' council to rewrite the city charter and come up with a "strong Mayor" system with 4 council members and chain of command wherein the department heads deal with the one "city supervisor, and drop this city manager concept of an unelected ne man/or woman show we have now. Then city government would have to listen to the public and stop this horseshit we have now - which is out of date and as they say same old, same old: indecisive, gridlocked, stalemated, and one that often chooses the wrong paths that cost plenty of money in the end, and one that haggles about pennies and a arena snack bar contract.

The difference is they're cooking for themselves, once in a while, not paid to cook for others.

Do they still make those auto lunch stands they made in the 60's? Or could the city buy one from E-bay? Fill it up just before every game with pie...other foods. Have a person at the door charging them for what they take. Fill a tray from the little glass holes and pay at the door...Leave. Done.

Hey 0930,
Urine in agreement then!

So, what happened to the previous concession stand and who ran that?

Hire DANC to run the COW.
