Company Ponders Move to Canada

New York values ?  Is there value being in NY ?
This is an interesting article about the business climate in NY and the effects of public policy like the ACA and the minimum wage have on small businesses.
A hockey tape maker in Watertown is considering Ontario to relocate. That says volumes.
Business owners making real decisions, not having those decisions made for them. Novel idea.

C'mon. Surely this is not a surprise. Anybody could see this coming that is in any viable business even the worker bees. Fair wages yes. Socialism no.

Good thing we have a glut of affordable housing and landlords that can renegotiate their loan terms from JCIDA, etc. beyond infinity.

unfortunately most firms that operate in NY, that are not geographically constrained (such as fast food restaurant franchises and brick and mortar retail) are scrambling right now to get out before the deadline. For competitive reasons they typically can't risk changing the pricing structure of their various manufactured products merely because they operate in NY. There is no Made in New York competitive marketing advantage. Few company want to go public with info that they are leaving, or they will start bleeding employees who know they are short listed.

Mario is banking on the premis that NY is a retail and government nipple economy, and that the loss of all moveable jobs will not matter. I.e. Better to have 6 people making 15-, than 10 people making 10-.

He is wrong about the effect it will have on the non metropolitan economy as he has failed to consider the ripple of less total people working, and he is horribly wrong or completly devoid of empathy towards the lives and businesses he will destroy. Even jobs that he thinks are "safe from exit" are severly at risk, and favor corporate Wall Street.

The food you eat at any restaurant will for example be prepared in one of two way. First the old fashioned way of being prepared on site by kitchen help, or now the Coumo Pay way wherein all prep work will be done in other states, flash frozen and shipped to NY where you will consume it in a corporate chain restaurant. This Coumo Pay way will be cheaper, and his will then cause a continued decline of locally owned and operated restaurants. The list goes on and on.

New York workers and business owners, be prepared for the crash, because it's coming for you.

Well that's simple. Just have Andy pass a law stating that that no company can leave NYS.

When you are more free in Canada than in Benito's Empire, that tells you bunches. But we like it that way.

That Tape Company isn't going anywhere and for sure not Canada.

Oregon is jumping on the $15/hour band wagon as well.

As far as Tape - he notes that it's not just the impact of raising the sub $15/hour to the new minimum there is the impact of maintaining parity for those above $15. So if its +4 to get the lowest paid worker to $a5 then everybody gets at least $4/hour raise.

Hmmmm - did not see THAT coming!!!!

The Tape Co, Car Freshner, the Frame company... will all be substantially reduced 3-5 years from now. Stream will follow. It's over, unless you're attached to the nipple. I know some people on the take want to pretend somehow that it's a business owners responsibility to accept the vote pandering actions of a Left Wing socialist agenda, but here's a slap in the face for you : NO. Or better said: NO F..ING WAY.

Last one out turn off the lights, and let the alphabet job developers fight over what remaining businesses they choose destroy with their disgraceful pick and choose economic manipulation.

More pay, pay more taxes. Simple isn't it. But a lot of people cannot get that thru their heads. There is no middle ground, it's either you have a lot of money, or you do not.

Not to worry - JCIDA will factor this into and increase PILOTS for all.

The worst thing about raising the minimum wage is that these people have know idea how to budget their money. They're already driving their brand new SUVs to the mall to spend $100 to watch a movie that they couldn't wait to come out on netflix and watch it on their $700 iPhone 10s over their $200/month cable service.
You could raise it to $50/hr and they still wouldn't be able to "afford health insurance".

and it might be because of the lower loonie and the fact their market is there...
