WDT: Don't Ban Butts in Public Housing

Government overreach or just protecting health and property ? A proposed ban on smoking in public housing will be a bear to enforce and some wonder if it goes too far.
Well, health aside, smoking damages property. It is pervasive and expensive to clean up. That's a legitimate landlord issue.
However, isn't there a home you can retreat to to get away from it all....Likely not.

As a landlord I do not allow smoking in the apartments. It is a bear to get the stench out of the carpets and it even gets into the walls.

It impossible to rent to a non smoker once the stench permeates the apartment

I thought smoking was already banned in most if not all rentals.

Anyone else hearing about Patty Ritchie having a primary opponent? I keep hearing that conservatives are not pleased with her too close for comfort relationship with Cuomo and other Democrats. Backus, Nelson, Finley, Lajoie?

Republicans are not pleased with her RINOness either. But none of us are dumb enough to wast time trying to replace her.

If they can afford $10 a pack to smoke, the should pay for their own housing.

738.. You have got it wrong.. There likely will be a primary but it wont be any of the wannabes above.. Doheny is being primed right now and one other choice from Oswego somewhere. The Democrat opponent will be the biggest suprise..

Banning smoking is an excrementty thing to do to old people who are stuck living in a high rise on a fixed income, for the final years of their lives. But I wouldn't expect anything else from democrats. Being a democrat is all about the control of others. The Road to Serfdom, so to speak, per se.

That is not to say that smoking doesn't stink and cause damage. But so do dogs, cats and Irishmen. That is what the rent and deposit are supposed to pay for.

Many miss the point of no smoking in the public houses. It's the cost when the people leave. Painting, getting the smell out, and more. That's all it is. It's nothing to do with health. Its' cost of doing business.

2:25 you are SO right.
If they can afford the cost of this habit, they can own their own place to clean and paint.
When you see them slid the benefit card for soda, and other non-essential items I have to work for, then they deserve to get a job.
The EBT should just qualify them for needed foods, and cleaning items, with no change or money returned. No returns for the item or it is put back on the card. maybe if they don't have the money they will work for the money needed for the potato chips, cigarettes, soda etc.
Some things I cannot afford, but I am buying it for those who shouldn't get it for free.
As for the smoking, it should be BANNED from anyplace they do not own, as well as their car when small children are stuck inside riding with them. WE cant talk or text, which I agree, but you can see some riding with their windows opened enough to let some smoke out, with small children inside.. Isn't this endangering the welfare when they don't have a choice to leave and are forced to take in the smoke.. maybe the asthma and allergy issues should be addressed when they qualify for the EBT card.. if they don't get it, then maybe have them sit in on classes again and again. Or maybe just lose their children to a better home which will give them a true meaning of love and family. Sorry for the ranting but this EBT qualifications kill me.. I saw a guy use it in Aldi's yesterday and walk outside and get into a new Ford Focus and drive off. Hopefully it was someone's car he borrowed, because if he uses a EBT, how can he afford a car better than my Aunt who worked her whole life??????

Ray, you miss the point of banning smoking in public housing. They do it for control and power and no other reason. They don't care about the costs. "Costs" are only money and liberals will always look at money as being limitless. The fact is that if the government is going to be in the housing business, they need to be in the freedom business. I have never smoked a day in my life but the last thing in the world I would do is try to take smoking away from some old fart who has very few pleasures in their life but the tobacco they have been using since they were a teenager. Not to mention that it would be impossible to enforce.
