One thing I have learned about public office is not to be impressed by people who say they won't take the salary or don't need the money, usually in a bid to shame their opponent who does expect to be paid for work done.
Eliot Spitzer is the latest, pledging to work for a dollar a year as NYC Comptroller. Aside from the danger of New Yorkers getting what they pay for, such a stunt only smacks of arrogance and a patronizing view towards those who work for a living.
Anyone so inclined can just donate the money back to the government. Meanwhile opponent Scott Stringer should not feel ashamed to state he needs the paycheck to support his family. That's what people do....They work to get paid. And as long as they work hard and do a good job there is no disgrace in that and no need for the rich guy in the race to try and make him feel bad about it.
