Capitol Confidential » Budget may include minimum wage, training wage

A "training wage" may be the compromise that allows the GOP to save some face on minimum wage as the budget debate wraps up.
The lower wage for young workers in their first months of employment may be the most business groups can hope for and that's why they are signing on.
A relaxation of pot laws is also one of the last issues being debated as the budget talks draw to a close, perhaps as early as today.

As fate would have it:

To quote Rick in Casablanca, "It looks like destiny has taken a hand after all" in NYS politics, and one of these guys isn't walking away from this political train wreck. Try as they might to convince me they're close to an agreement on the minimum wage hike, I just don't believe Sen. Klein or Sen. Skelos have the prerequisites in place for a deal. A deal they’ve both needed but can't make, because their they’re unable to address each other’s needs, in any one package to pass this legislation. Where Sen. Klein without a doubt knows a rise in the Minimum Wage is long overdue, and that it addresses what President Obama called, "The right of every full-time worker to avoid living in poverty." He unfortunately is stuck dealing with Skelos, who has his own agenda.

Instead Sen. Dean Skelos, and Conservative Mike Long view this Minimum Wage legislation as an excuse to hold the entire deal hostage to their real goal; obtaing the desired ‘big pay off’ in tax relief for the rich, who by the way don't need it, and at the same time throw a bone to small business owners, who don't really deserve tax credits for not paying a fair wage to their employees. Sen. Skelos still is insisting they get some tax breaks into place for business owners who screw their workers year after year, because he doesn't want them as voters to be offended by the Republicans signing onto a Minimum Wage hike at their expense. Yeah Mr. Skelos we do get your point, but we're really heading for a train wreck here. It's time for Governor Cuomo to fire Sen. Skelos for being the Republican 'train legislative engineer’ most likely to cause a real political train wreck to happen out of blind to political self interest. I guess Sen. Skelos is resistant to the truth that a Minimum Wage Hike will get done, with or without him, but it’s time for Gov. Cuomo to drive that point home to Skelos now.

As a small business owner, who does need $..do you own a business MCM?? You do realize that whether the minimum wage goes up or not, that extra hike in the wage will be recouped by the state in taxes, payroll taxes, mandated health costs etc..If I truly believed that the extra income would be $ saved or spent by these earners, we would be all for it...it does not work that way. I would love to pay our workers $15 an hour...but we can't because everytime we turn around the state takes more and more..u just don't get that.

"Mayor Graham is a 'Visionary' after All"

Do you get this, ANON 1:42 PM, Sen. Warren (MASS) thinks a 22.00 hourly rate might be more in line with the cost of living for workers on the Minimum Wage? When you have good ideas like a higher minimum in the $20.00 range, I have to give you credit Mayor, thought you were joking, but I see the good Sen. Warren agrees with you?

Sen. Warren is like any other nut job wacko pol. who says things that he can't validate. If someone could explain how small businesses could afford this, then I am all for it. Please, a little substantiality to some of these claims. I am not a fast food eater, but, could you imagine paying $8.00 for a small fry? This is the byproduct. The decision is simple, either we realistically look at this from a cost analysis factor, or, we can mandate $22.00 an hour and watch the private sector disappear. Sen. Warren should be ashamed. We all want more, but, how do we generate it vs. going in the public and making outlandish claims not bery becoming of a public servant.

ANON 9:55AM

Sen. Warren (Mass) was in committee address a question which asked, Why shouldn't the minimum wage be linked to worker productivity, by American workers who have increased their productivity dramatically, allowing for much higher business profits. If you look at the proposed $9.00 dollar minimum wage based on that, the Federal Gov't should be proposing a $22.00 hourly rate and the Senator wanted to know where the other $14.00 dollars went if not to the worker who was more productive than ever, etc.
