Cuomo: Better To Do Minimum Wage Increase On Federal Level

Of course, Albany wants DC to do the minimum wage thing for them. That way NY isn't seen as a tax Mecca....It is and this just one more hidden tax.
In keeping with New York's progressive tradition, perhaps we can make the minimum wage , a "living wage" equal to say, the average state employee. I am sure Middle Class Mike is on board.

Just print some more money and make the minimum wage $25 bucks an hour. If it causes problems, borrow the money and add it to the deficit. Weeeeeeeeeeee

Can I have another condom for the use of your kid?

I'm all for a person being able to eat and pay the bills while working. BUT...

It seems like we are going the way of Canada. Full medical care at a big price. Taxes through the roof. Money spent like water. No limit to socialism. Sure the Canadians make crazy money. But they can't afford to buy anything. Why do we want that?

Our politicians are Anti-Small Business Owner. This has to be the only logical explanation for their quest to raise the minimum wage.

It's simple economics and common sense. If a small business owner has X amount of dollars to spend on wages, then that business owner is able to staff X amount of people. Raise the cost of minimum wage, business owner staff less personnel. Very simple.

Raising the min wage DOES not by all reputable studies impact or hurt small businesses ... consider this:

America’s low-wage economy is marked by two extremes. On the one hand, workers earning at or near the minimum wage are seeing the real value of their paychecks diminish steadily over time, as the cost of living increases while their wages remain stagnant.

After nearly half a century of neglect, today’s federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour is decades out of date. In terms of purchasing power, its value is 30 percent lower today than it was in 1968.

On the other hand, many corporations are posting record-breaking profits. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that, after sinking from 2007 to 2009, corporate profits had successfully caught up to their pre-recession peak by the beginning of 2010 – and that by the third quarter of 2011, total profits for U.S. corporations reached a new record high of $1.97 trillion.

The Rightwing argument is bogus ... a red herring and BS. People work hard for $7.25/hour and if they earn more, they will spend more - that is a fact, too.

It is long overdue.

8:16 it's because these leaders come from (or very closely related to) academia where theory trumps personal, hands-on, practical considerations.

Is Coalition Government in Jeopardy?

Speaker Silver introduced the legislation today in the Assembly - it calls for a 9.00 hrly rate and he wants it linked to the cost of living. Dean Skelos is going to have a tough time resisting this period. He is more and more at loggerheads with Gov. Cuomo. Yesterday it was reported that the 'Coalition' government is beginning to fray at the edges and everyone is beginning to wonder if it can last in the New York Senate or if the Governor will pull the plug on Coalition government at the earliest possible date. It was a bad idea from the start, that kept Dean Skelos in his Majority Leader seat, but it's not working out according to many in the NYS Senate, because of Skelos's foot dragging on the Governor's Progressive legislation. Stay tuned to Albany, and wait to hear the dud 'Coalition' government makes when it comes crashing down.

If you are over the age of 25 and are still working a minimum wage job, you have failed at life. Sorry.

Additionally, what happens to the workers who are currently making $9.00? Do they also get a raise, so they continue to make more than minimum wage....or.....are they reduced to a minimum wage employee?

There's more to life then the size of your check. In any case the need to put food on the table and pay bills remains.

Hate to tell Government the real problem in today's work force is to many part time jobs and no full time ones. You can make $9 an hour all you want and it still won't help you if the place you work for offers only 20 hours a week. That's the game in retail. God only knows that's the bulk of the jobs around here.

If you are an absolute moron like 6:12PM and you think that people over age 25 who are still working minimum wage jobs have ”failed at life” you’re most likely another pathetic small-minded Republican who doesn’t have a clue as to what life is about in the first place.

With ObamaCare, most all businesses are limiting hours to 30 or less. That exempts them from having to provide health insurance. The problem for struggling folks is not the wage, it's hours and a benefit package. Dannie and Mikey wanted the Free healthcare. Now you got it. Trouble is, now you don't have full time jobs. Dannie, it's YOUR arguments that are bogus. But then again, you get all your healthcare for Free, don't you? Mikey too, provided by his wife. You guys don't have to worry about getting enough hours. You just take the party line of more pay will make everything hunky dory. Such BS.

Going for less the 30 hours or less does not take away the fact you have to offer insurance. You have to offer insurance to all. It makes sure that most can't afford it and have to decline it. That's all. Yes it is still a plan to fudge people up.
