Nixon at 100......Good or Bad...You Decide

Today is the 100th birthday of Richard Milhous Nixon.....
Tricky Dick's number one fan...former aide Roger Stone is spending the evening with the Reboso family in Key Biscayne.....That would be a party I'd like to attend.
Of course Roger has that Nixon tattoo on his back, and that's a little too intense for me.
President Nixon was a fighter...a not so popular guy who made it to the White House...And really, wasn't all that Watergate stuff a little overblown ?
22 Reasons To Love Richard Nixon On His Birthday

The only differences between Nixon and Obama is Nixon was an enemy of the main stream media, while Obama has them in his pants. That, and Nixon was Conservative and Obama wants FreeStuff to buy votes. It was a different world during the Cold War. Even Dannie had a gun in those days. And he wasn't afraid of them either.

Take away Watergate (which there is no excuse for and served no purpose) then Nixon was a very good President.

This country should never forget, nor forgive, Richard Nixon for the abuse of power which he undertook. He used any and all branches of government to attack and undermine his political enemies, real and perceived.

For a summary see http://watergate.info/impeachment/articles-of-impeachment.

“Nixon: An American Political Giant
I see Richard Nixon who would have been a 100 Years old Jan. 9, 2013, as the best and worst of what any American leader can be in his/her lifetime. He was a paranoid personality of unlimited political genius. “An American Political Giant” Nixon was a working class boy, from a working class family who became President of the United States in 1968. Nixon was a man of conscience who did some unconscionable things in his public and private life. People who didn’t live through ‘Watergate’ will never totally understand how it rocked the nation to its core. Watergate happened because Nixon wanted his political enemies investigated and potential rivals discredited in the 1972 Presidential race; especially Teddy Kennedy. The fact that he involved the FBI and CIA in the scandal is unforgivable.
Rumors still abound about why ‘Watergate’ happened, one by ‘Gordon Liddy on his radio show suggested there was a call girl list in a desk draw that was used by politico’s on occasion when they were looking to relax and have female companionship. Nixon wanted the list and the clients who used it to rent woman from a certain Madame, who it was also rumored that John Dean’s wife once had as a roommate. Another rumor was that Larry O’Brian was early in his life a bag man for Howard Hughes and had delivered 100,000 dollars in money to Nixon on one occasion. In a Feb. 2005 60 minutes interview Terry Lenzner, who was assistant chief counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee, said “Hughes, then owner of the Desert Inn and several other Las Vegas properties, funneled $100,000 to Nixon through Nixon friend Charles "Bebe" Rebozo”
Nixon supposedly sent the ‘Plumbers’ and Howard Hunt (Ex CIA) into Watergate to find out what Larry O’Brian the DNC Chair had on him, and if O’Brian was going to talk about the Howard Hughes connection to sink him in the 1972 Presidential campaign. Interesting that George Steinbrenner turned down the DNC job that Larry O’Brian took. George was sought as DNC because he had raised a ton of money for the 1970 Congressional campaigns. The New York Daily News sportswriter Bill Madden mentioned that story in his Steinbrenner autobiography – a great read on the Boss’s Yankee stewardship. If George had taken the job ‘Watergate mightn’t have happened.

After his resignation on August 8 1974, former United States President Richard Milhous Nixon retired to write his memoirs and rehabilitate his reputation. He wrote numerous newspaper and magazine articles, and published eight books, including The Real War. After reading all of Richard Nixon’s eight books, like 1978’s “The Memoirs of Richard Nixon, and 1990’s, “In the Arena: A Memoir of Victory, Defeat and Renewal, I saw Richard Nixon as one of the greatest political geniuses of my lifetime. And without doubt the greatest foreign policy genius this Country has ever produced.

I also stopped thinking it was Henry Kissinger who educated Henry Kissinger on foreign policy, and started to sincerely believe that what Dr. Kissinger didn’t learn about foreign policy in Harvard –Richard Nixon taught him. An example being Richard Nixon was the real architect of d├ętente and the triangulated diplomatic approach, with China and Russia, that was a sensible attempt to try to win a peace with honor concerning our exit from Viet-Nam. I see Richard Nixon as immensely flawed, yet, immensely gifted and a political genius of the first rank.

Ever wonder how different the world would be today had he won in 1960. Bay of Pigs would have had air support. Castro would be gone and no Cuban Missile Crisis. Vietnam would have been handled differently. John Kennedy, who had been Nixon's best friend and largest campaign contributor prior to the 1960 election, might have been his ally in the Senate working on civil rights legislation. If President Nixon had been assassinated in 1963 he would be remembered far differently today

Reason 23. He was a douche bag… yet far better than any of the last election’s Republican candidates.

O'Brian worked for Hughes right up until he moved to the DNC. Hughes had an office break-in and theft which he attributed to the DNC and wanted whatever was taken back. It wasn't the $100,000 he gave to Nixon, because he gave an equal $100,000 to Humphrey for political favors if elected. Nixon took the money but refused to do any political favors. Humphrey took the money and agreed to do Hughes bidding. The above information comes from Hughes Diary.

Give Nixon some credit. He opened up China for trade with the U.S. You can decide if that was good or bad.

But, it did result in one of the greatest headlines EVER in The Ottawa Citizen. which was: "NIXON FINDS CHINK IN MAO'S ARMOUR".

Does anyone really read MCM's lengthy posts or just skip over them as I do?

Yeah,I would say that letting an American ambassador and his protection detail perish, ignoring their cries for help, then refusing to talk about it,makes that little burglary overblown.

NY55inPUke, any abuse of power Nixon was responsible for pales in comparison to the Nazi in today's White House. You know that. But in your typical partisan BS blindness you won't admit it. Nixon should have given out more FreeStuff. Then he would have gotten away with more crimes. Media supports your guy. That's the only difference.

The first post is waaaay off base. Nixon was no conservative. He was the embodiement of a moderate, much to his credit. He started the EPA for cryin' out loud. If he were to run today, he would be called a RINO and primaried by some Teabagger crying about freestuff. These new Republicans have no sense of history and should be stifled whenever possible. They do not realize the REAL Republicans that came before them. The ones that actually accomplished something good for the country.

Yeah, ANON 9:43, like Nelson Rockefeller. You guys no so much but can't win a Statewide election in NYS, so try shutting up and learning something, because you obviously know very little about anything concerning politics.

Nixon was no moderate, he was a left wing progressive. He didn't start the EPA, he signed it into law. But he did start OSHA and proposed national health care in his speeches.

BTW...teabaggers "cry" about freestuff because we are 16 trillion in debt and our country will collapse because of debt...because of frestuff. And giving people frestuff makes them stupid lazy and (fear of being redundant), democrat voters.

7:31....Some advice...Whenever someone calls someone else a "NAZI", it means they are losing the argument.

Anonymous said...

Yep, Tricky Dick also expanded the food stamp program including mandatory state participation! No doubt about it, according to existing T/Pub radical standards, Nixon would be regarded as a left wing liberal Nazi.

8:56 I certainly understand what you mean. I ordinarily agree. Unfortunately, a president that ignores the Constitution and RULES by executive order can only be viewed as Nazi like. But I understand your feelings. And sadly, in this case, I'm not interested in winning any argument. I'm stating my opinion. I believe we are headed towards the same problems Germany faced in the 1930's. We have a completely complicit media, a give away leader promising everything to all, and a leader willing to ignore law. What would you call it?

Anonymous said...

10:48am, for the sake of argument, let’s say you are correct in your assessment of the current administration… do you really think that someone like a Mitt Romney would make a measurable difference?

Anonymous said...

2:57 I never saw anything in Romney that would suggest he would RULE outside of the restraints of the Constitution. And just having a president that did NOT enjoy lock step support of media would have been healthy for the nation. And a question to you, just for discussion sake. How fair is a question like that? We have a dictator with few controls on his bahaviour. Your "defense" is the other guy probably would have been just as bad? Not a logical conclusion. That is the kind of supposition that media plants, free of charge to the Obama team. There is no evidence of Romney governing that way in any of his past offices. None at all. But there are many who blurb the exact thoughts you just floated. Strange. Media did its job.

1:31 Most DO skip over Mike's posts. After all, they are mostly stolen from other websites. I read what is said up until the time they go into the copied sections, which is usually the second paragraph or so. Then it's on to the next poster. He has been shown many times how he steals others' writings, but simply denies it. Even when it is listed as to where he takes it from. Mikey is a great Donkey. Imagine putting a guy like that in a classroom.
