New York's new gun law: Answers to some questions | syracuse.com

Figuring out New York's new gun law will be the order of the day for gun owners and those who sell them. The regulatory apparatus must be set up and those who are law abiding and follow current events will comply while those who are not, will not.
By restricting private transfers, gun dealers could actually benefit as transactions, or at least the background checks would go through them.
Some interesting nuances...You can still own a ten round clip but can only put seven rounds in it.

Those who are not law abiding will not comply? This is one of those laws that will be ignored a lot, (like cell phone laws), by otherwise law abiding citizens.
Plus...it sounds like it is too ambiguous to comply with.

I wonder how Cuomo will fair on the national scene when he is exposed to the nation as too stupid to write a gun law that can be readily interpreted?

If after 1 year you can't transfer your semi-automatic rifle that possesses one banned feature what in Cuomo's law would prevent you from taking it out of state and selling it there? Even though he is a governor, he is not governor of all states.

“Gov. Cuomo Stopped Rush to buy Assault” Weapons”
The passing of 72 hours to debate legislation which was already a forgone conclusion to pass in the Assembly, and Senate would have allowed a ginned up public, drunk on NRA propaganda to buy thousands more Assault weapons and High Capacity Clips. The Governor himself said that was what spurred him on to get the NY Safe Act passed as quickly as possible. The NRA has spent a fortune on misrepresenting, ‘Gun Control’ measures as an assault on the 2nd Amendment. Gov. Cuomo is really attempting to help stop the carnage that’s killing innocents in NYS and all over America, because Assault Weapons are in the hands of criminally insane individuals.

Conservative Republicans in the NYS Senate and NRA leadership, state that Gov. Cuomo is playing the Tyrant in NYS, and bending the rules to get his legislation past. NRA advocates never mention how the NRA consists of a ‘Tyrannical Board, not elected, but who have the sole power to nominate candidates to that Board; usurping the votes and wishes of a vast majority of the NRA membership. A membership who when polled, shows they would readily adapt sensible gun control measures. The NRA Board consists of people like Grover Norquist (Republican Tea Party), Oliver North (Republican Tea Party), and other staunch Conservatives, who won’t even allow their membership to vote for Board members without dictating the results beforehand. On that board they have a CEO for one of the largest arms consortiums in the Country, acting as a high level lobbyist, who just wants to sell guns in America period.

Gov. Cuomo was up against the NRA and its propaganda ministry and their ‘Tyrannical” leadership. They misrepresented what people advocating ‘Gun Control’ are fighting for and its not to usurp the 2nd Amendment, or take away a hunter’s right to hunt, or a citizen’s right to own a gun. All we are saying is Gov. Cuomo is giving 'Gun Control' a chance to save lives in NYS and showing the way for America to get gun violence under control. The need to act swiftly was also dictated by acting while the iron to do so was hot, because there’s a history of doing legislators doing nothing once a tragedy recedes in the mind of the public. Sadly we now see that these incidents continue routinely in or out of NYS. This legislation is a good start and Gov. Cuomo should be given high marks for seeing this bill was passed sooner rather than later.

Probably a lot better than “W” who was too stupid to read the back of his Cap’n Crunch Cereal box…

As usual Mike blows BS out his mouth. There is no excuse whatsoever for promoting a law that fails to address any of the issues that were involved with the murders in CT. That was a tragedy that focused on mental health issue and gun storage. Primarily the former. The most important thing that needed attention was to finds ways to identify, encourage and ensure that people who need mental health assistance and treatment received such. So Mikey and his hysterical bunch in Albany puked up nonsense. They will require you to load only seven rounds in magazines. Imagine that my dumbass friend. A guy/girl/transgender who is willing to kill innocents but feels bound by law NOT to load his magazine with more than 7 rounds. Sounds logical to me. Do I laugh here or later? Another aspect of our motivated Guv's law is to do background checks on ammunition. That certainly will help things. Help what, I have no idea. Face it Mikey and Dannie, this part of the law will only discourage law abiding people from standing in line to purchase ammo for their already legally purchased firearm. And it will cause dealers to stop selling in NY. Earth to Mike and Dan, THUGS don't use much ammo. They can rob numerous homes with just a few rounds. And their guns are usually stolen. Generalissimo Cuomo was hoping his quickie move would put him in the national spotlight. It has. Anyone from the other 56 states that heard his mindless moaning and ranting now knows how stupid NYers are for putting a babboon in control of NYS government. The emotional cries and spirited nonsense made me think the Gov wants his own reality show. With his screaming in what could only be described as an emotional meltdown, and never questioning fans like Mikey, he's a shoo-in for a mini-series. But lay off the buttered popcorn Mikey, you're going to have to lose weight. You are already costing us enough in increased healthcare costs.

MCM is simply saying the gun lobby made up of the NRA want this whole thing TO SLOW DOWN. Then, they can use their millions and their lobby on K Street to get control of the situation.

So, if you hear ANY politician say we should slow this whole thing down, you know who's pocket they are in.

Hmmm...Does anyone out there REALLY think the authors of the 2nd Amendment were thinking of assault weapons being used to shoot up innocent primary school children when they wrote almost 225 years ago of forming a militia, and a right to bear arms? WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP!

This law is such a load of crap. While I am all for backgound checks for gun purchases, ammo is ridiculous, gun bans don't work. Criminals don't care. All you did was affect law abiding citizens. As far as how the NRA board works, who cares. They are not the government and if people don't like it they can leave. A little harder to do that with your government. I don't care what your excuse is, there is no reason to try to pass a law in the middle of the night like a theif. Guess what Mikey, if I want an assault rifle, I drive down to Pennsylvania and by one and then bring it back. I have a whole year to register it. So racing through in the middle of the night only guaranteed no feed back from his constituents. He already had his mind made up about gun control, long before the shooting, this was just his chance to capitalize on it.

The Siena poll today indicated that 73 % of New Yorkers favor gun control legisltion as passed ,and in upstae the percentage is 60 percent approval so you gun advocates are in a minority and the tide has turned .

I didn't realize you were the sensitive type. Ginned up is just a political expression in voque to discribe fanatical NRA types and gun nuts. I wouldn't call you a drunk, so don't create a puddle okay. MCM

Wrong 6:10. These numbers have shifted drastically in just the last few days. People are starting to hear the logic on one side and the hormonal hysteria on the other. Don't lie. If you believe in what you say, it isn't necessary.

4:33, you repeat the media barfed line about whether many of today's guns existed when the 2A was written. Apply that logic to the 1A. Did they have knowledge of computers and cell phones when they outlined the necessity of freedom of speech? Don't be so quick to swallow what Mikey and his media discharges. You never really know what's in that stuff. The point is, the CT crime was about mental health and storage issues. The new law passed by crying, screaming Gov, addresses none of that. It is BS to placate people who are stupid. OR, who put party above freedom. This move will make no one safer. To think a criminal will only load his magazine with 7 rounds when he enters a school to kill people is absurd. Only a Mikey, or a complete fool would believe that crap. But I repeat myself.

I would love to know the definition of upstate, Albany? How about the majority of central, western and northern NY. This freaking state is like two different worlds, but yet NYC, and that whole region always get their way. How about we leave these gun laws to a more local level. We are tired of appeasing these people down there in NYC and surrounding areas, they have more crime than anyone, but we suffer. One shooting in Webster NY makes the news, but only because he use a scary looking gun. Shootings happen so much in the city that they don't even report it anymore.

Yes the Siena Poll, We all know how the questions on polls are asked................

Forget the second amendment. It is the libtards and Obama that love "social justice". A term he and his left wing totalitarian Communists have turned into a misnomer and massaged to mean injustice.

Okay, forget social justice too...but at one time its meaning overlapped the meaning of civil rights. And the biggest civil right is the right to defend yourself. And anyone with any knowledge of shooting incidents for self defense, knows that these new useless and stupid rules will greatly hinder self defense.

The Siena poll only polled 676 registered voters in NY. There are over 19.3 million people in NY, so I highly doubt 676 people are a majority!

Actually the crime rate per thousand in NYC is lower thansyracuse and MANY other upstate cities and the Siena poll is no lie friend it was released yesterday check YOUR facts . And as far as cutting downstate off in a separate stae , HOW manytimes do youneed to be told NYC generates MORE tax revenue than it gets back and WITHOUT thatrevenuee NNY would GO UNDER financially. NNY has a Disproportionate SHARE of tax revenue meaning NNY GETS mORE BACK FROM NYS than NNY generates in tax revenue . Thus your dream would be financial SUICIDE for NNY.

Try fact checking sometimes before emotional outbursts that are simply untrue and add nothing to the discourse. U risk being marginalized and isolated .

"Wrong 6:10. These numbers have shifted drastically in just the last few days."

Numbers backed up with sources please... otherwise it's just hearsay...

p.s. Hannity and Limbaugh don't count...

If you go to the Siena polls web site, it tells you the number of registered voters they contact for the poll they are conducting! 676 registered voters are all that were contacted for this particular poll! FACT!!!

9:11- I like how you say "Try fact checking sometimes before emotional outbursts that are simply untrue and add nothing to the discourse. U risk being marginalized and isolated"! Take your own advise and check for yourself! I did research the Siena poll that was released and it tells you at the top how many people were polled along with a 3.8% +/-!! Its kind of hard to say people need to do their research if you can't follow your own advise!

I live in NYS this legislation wasnt even read by the liberals, Time to move on and I don't want to hear another word about gun control unless it's a steady hand.

I read the list of banned rifles. It only goes up to the letter H. Horseshit.

I have never seen any "facts" saying that NYC generates more taxes than they bring in. As the nanny state totalitarians always tell this flawed study, they always count all of NY state and compare it to upstate.

What they never talk about is all the controls Albany puts on what would make upstate a financial heaven. They never talk about our hydro power they steal from us or the gambling and cigarette taxes they steel from us. or the lost revenue and jobs we suffer from under their rules.

NY is like pimp and upstate is the best looking prostitute they own. They beat us and tell us the money they got for our body is theirs.

Look at what NY has to do to the Indian reservations to keep them down. violate the interstate commerce clause by levying their cigarette taxes. And violate Indian sovereign rights by controlling their gambling and liquor rights.

With a level playing field, upstate economy would surpass downstate inside of a decade.
