Higher Minimum Wage to Take Effect July 1

The minimum wage will go to $8.75 on July 1 and counties will no longer have to grovel to Albany to renew their local sales tax rates if Governor Cuomo's budget proposals pass. The spending plan also closes two prisons (none up here) and increases aid to schools by 4.4%.
The outline of spending seems to have little that will stall passage by April 1st, which is the beginning of New York's fiscal year.

Only 4.4% for schools? What about the children!

Any headlines going to tell us how much shortfall deficit he is proposing? Or what our total debt is?

Obamacare and minimum wage hike in one hear means many lost jobs and closed pizza shops coming up this year.

It will be interesting to watch the effect of a higher minimum wage will have on businesses operating in NYS especially with the advent of Obamacare.

It's not rocket science.

If an employer has X amount of dollars to spending on employee wages, etc., said employer will be able to maintain X amount of employees. No more, no less. I predict increase in minimum wage coupled with the expense of Obamacare care will have a direct effect on 1. How many people an employer will be able to comfortably be able to employ and 2. How many employees will be considered to be "full-time".

Yes, give the kids more. To bad we can't give them all the will to work hard for the money. Plus, good luck for all us dumb people who worked for years. Good luck on ever getting anymore money. All the money has to go into hiring new people that we get to watch us work. Thank's Andy!

If this was a way to pay people and give them affordable health insurance without price hikes...then I am for it. Let's see what happens at businesses that pay minimum and what the price of the goods they sell become.

People have a right to fair compensation for work:

In the near Depression, Ultra recession hit economy President Obama inherited, and Gov. Cuomo walked into a few years ago, the ‘Minimum wage became crucial to Adults seeking retraining, etc. It meant they’d be willing to work to jobs to pay bills while they picked up new skills to make them employable again in NYS and America. It is ridiculous to say the ‘Minimum Wage’ is for teenagers when so many service industry jobs and food chains etc. pay it. People work to earn the money they need to pay bills and not fall further into debt and often work two jobs to accomplish that with ‘Minimum Wage’ salaries. The small business owner has to understand that people work and need fair compensation, they don’t come to work to subsidize your business and the profits you earn, with near slave labor wages while their own debt structure skyrockets.

The inflation caused by this and the rest of the disastrous policies being implemented will push anyone on a fixed income into poverty. Stop the Madness Now. Cut taxes, cut spending and revive the economic policies that Reagan used to end the double digit inflation of the Jimmy Carter years.

Not true, Mike. The skill-sets required to fill the occupations you cite are no more than what you would get and/or expect from someone with nothing more than a HS diploma. If you expand your skill-sets, you can try to find a better paying job. If you are 50 or 60 years old and have nothing to expand your skill sets, why should you be rewarded for not doing anything to better yourself, regardless of what financial obligations you may have?

Mike you are wrong again!
That's all I will post.

Raise in Minimum Wage Long Overdue:

ANON 3:34 by your brilliant statement, "what you would get and/or expect from someone with nothing more than a HS diploma" then an awful lot of City workers would be making 'Minimum Wage' in the City of Watertown, NY. It's called a day’s work for a day’s pay; obviously the person who hires someone needs them. They also need to pay them -a 'Minimum Wage' in America-- and it's going up in NYS and soon all of America.

How would MCM Know about work? It's a good thing it was raised so when Remington Plant shuts down over the ill-advised law no one read before we passed it the workers will be paid more.

Mikey, where are the employers supposed to get the money to pay for the higher wages? Out of their profits? They cannot get freemoney from ACORN or the gubmint like you do.

Just think, if MCM had a job, he will be getting a raise soon!

You keep spouting that totally BS line, like Remmington was about to go out of business. That Remington will be unable to produce other models of firearms is stupidity on your part and shows a complete lack of confidence in their management team to adjust to the marketplace condidtions. Try saying something smart once in a while, there's no law against that either.

"Marketplace conditions" includes the availability of a labor base that can perform a given roster of jobs in a labor market. Which means that an employer can pick and choose who they want to hire based on the skill-sets required for the job. When you live in an area where everyone has a bachelors degree, but the jobs that need to be filled in that area only require a HS diploma, you have an inbalance in the labor market. Also, depending on the job sector, you can have too many or not enough qualified applicants.

You simply don't shower the people with money. You're getting the same work and effort - the 'bare minimum', by definition and by paygrade - now for an inflated price. There's no incentive to work any harder simply by telling them they'll be paid more for what they did at a lower rate.

You feeling bad Mike? You and many others did put Americans out of their jobs dumb-dumb. That has to be a fact. if you shut a line of guns being made down, you let the employees go. Well at least they can go to Burger King and get almost the same money.

Hey MCM let the market decide? Then why does Remington have to quit making Bushmasters under the ill-advised law by the King? Leave COW workers if they weren't around who would plow the snow so people like you could get to work.........

REmington needs:

a good marketing plan which takes into account that you can't sell a Bushmaster in NYS these days, but wherever it's legal they'll go ahead and sell them I'm sure with NRA approval. But not here in NYS!
