Get Out of Bed and Go to Work.....period !

It's cold outside...and this is statisically the coldest week of the year...But on a morning when the mercury is -10 or -15 and there is no wind...no snow...is cancelling school "the toughest decision a superintendent makes" ?
No, it's not. Go to school....Go to work...and don't indulge the notion that we have to use 'em or lose 'em.
Am I so out of date ? My mom made sure I was dressed.. Mittens..Hat...the full Monte of winter.
Getting up and going to work is a virtue.....going to school is your job at that age..
Ask any employer about the work ethic problem today...it starts early in life. Get up. Meet your obligations...The world is run by those who show up.
A cold morning is no reason to cancel school.

I finally agree with something you have to say

You gotta start training Cuomobama voters when they are young and impressionable. That means you teach them when ever anything is hard or uncomfortable to do, you don't do it.

Your mom was/is entirely different than many mothers in Watertown today.

Superintendent has to try to keep kids safe even when their parents are too stupid or lazy to do so. Watertown has more students who walk to school than any other district in our area. The instant a student gets to school with frostbite the sh*t will hit the fan.

Fralick did the right thing today. He should delay Thursday NOW.

Right! Bring your pets inside and send the kids out..makes perfect sense.

You can't expect those teachers to get up on a cold morning. Not when they have important things to do like go to the health club, get their nails done, or find out how their 401k's are doing. Do you think the kids are going to learn about work ethic from a spoiled group who gets a raise no matter how bad a job they do?

Mayor, do you have any concept of who actually lives in your city?

Sure, you like to hold court at Pete's or your hole-in-the-wall dive on Pearl Street, but have you for five minutes taken a stroll down through some of the neighborhoods that send their kids to Ohio or North?

These kids are poor and neglected. Many of them struggle with showing up to school any given day because their parents just don't care about them. Expecting these parents to properly dress their children for the cold is a fantasy.

I'm glad you had a June Cleaver at home to bundle you up and shuffle you off to school. That's a luxury many Watertown students just don't have.

Save your moralizing for an issue you know about, like beer sales at the fairgrounds.

Mr Mayor, as being a recent transplant up here but finding out that you and I went through the West Irondequoit schools system, when that district and E. Rochester did not have any buses, I find it amusing that they cancel school be cause it's too cold. Last time I remember, back home, it was during the blizzard of '77. And we still had to walk when school was back. It is definitely more harsh than Rochester, but crikey throw some mittens and extra layers on! And what's with the HoverMoms keeping their kids warm waiting for the bus? I didn't have a bus. Jeez....

You show your total lack of knowledge where good politics are concerned. A parent considers the dangers of a child getting hypothermiA and or frost bits because the bus doesn't have adequate heat. Or they just don't listen and take the protective clothing off playing with friends. Hindsight is 20/20. As a parent i will remember your "opinion" as a leader come election time. I think you make a great radio personality but a lousy leader.

“The world is run by those who show up.”

And yet few would disagree the world is a mess. Oh, the irony…

Go to work, go to school - dress for it and just go! When the schools are closed due to snow on the road it is ONLY for the safety of the school buses. That makes sense. My question is, why aren't the entire staff at school? What a great opportunity for the administrators to have those teacher meetings that they use to close the school for half a day! Your neighbors got to their jobs, school staff can do the same! No excuse.

There are a lot of people who work outdoors in this kind of weather their entire lives for cryin' out loud. If you are too stupid to dress your kids for the weather, it's certainly not the schools fault for having school on a cold day. Good grief! This country has turned into a bunch of babies!

I'm laughing my butt off at some of the remarks in here.

Kids today are coddled. I grew up in the 70's. There was no school busing. I walked myself and my 2 younger sisters 3 blocks to school in all weather and got us there on time. I had friends who walked further that we did. Give me a break.

well, Mr Mayor, it is after all your blog, but you aren't the first person I would go to for advice. I have seen your name in the papers and that's for a reason.

Where I come from, there is something called "heat" in the schools.
Also, in a "smoke-free environment", just take a look outside your window to see who is puffing on a cigarette in this cold weather. There is no such thing as work ethic in today's world unless you are over 50.
My advise to the school superintendent would be to announce to the children, "PLEASE DO NOT LICK A FLAG POLE TODAY".
If you dress appropriately for the weather conditions, there should be no reason to cancel school because it's cold outside. Hello....isn't this the North Country and isn't it winter?

9:12 is on it. Let the kids stay home if you must, Mr Overpaid Administrator. But why shouldn't the staff show up. Everyone else in the community went to work. We shouldn't have to be reminded that there is no more spoiled and greedy group of people than these teachers. I'm sure they were home working on lesson plans. As 9:12 says, why not have those BS meetings we hear about so much on a day like this? I promise you, school thieves. There will come a time when enough people see through your dishonesty and greed.

Why close the grade school, middle schools and high schools all at once? How about making the 11th and 12th graders go to school with the teachers too?
Assume some of the grade school little bastards are too young to keep from freezing on the way to school and their parents suck.

But once they are old enough to get an abortion without parental consent, they ought to be able to put their hands in their pockets and walk to school briskly enough to keep from freezing.

Of course, we live in the time when you can get on your parents insurance until your are 28, live in your parents basement and vote for Obama.

Some town in Minnesota set the record for the recent cold spell. They didn't miss a day of school. Must be their teachers have a different union than ours.

There are a vast majority of people in this world who are "Book smart" while having NO COMMON SENSE! Does one choose to be stupid, or in the words of Lady Gaga, "I was born this way". ??

Funny that when the schools close because of weather the kids are out playing in it! Some of the kids are safer and warmer at school than at home! Go to school!

RNC Chair stupid ANON 7:37

Show some caution with the word stupid, Gov. Bobby Jinal, scolded the whole "Stupid' Republican Party, for acting like the 'Stupid' Republican Party. I say even Gov. Jinal can be right (No Pun Intended) sometimes. I will say this "They really did earn the title 'The Stupid Republican Party' and were willing to work overtime hrs. to earn that title. And for Karl Rove the pay was great. Who's the RNC Chair? Same 'Stupid' RNC chair you had last election, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus who the re-elected in a non-contested election. STUPID CHAIR gets rehired? They really are a 'Stupid' Party to have kept him.
