Cuomo Calls for State to Return to Progressive Ideals (Takes off the Mask ?) - NYTimes.com

Campaign on for 2016 as Governor Andrew Cuomo delivers a decidely "progressive" themed State of the State speech calling for an "end to madness" on guns, higher minimum wage, more greenhouse gas standards and even a network of electric charging stations to promote greener cars (oops).
Last November's election may have signaled to Mr. Cuomo its OK to back off on the more conservative mantra assumed in his first two years, as he angles to position himself for an expected run at the 2016 Democratic Presidential nomination.
He will need to use liberal dog whistles to win the nod and yesterday's speech seems to be a move in that direction.
On gun control, the Governor wants to pass a state law ahead of federal legislation to be seen as the nation's defacto leader on the matter.
Legislative sources say a law in Albany is close to being drafted.
Meanwhile, in a return to the norm, local political gadfly Middle Class Mike, has dropped his recent bashing of the Governor over the Senate fight and is embracing the speech as the lurch to the left we've been waiting for....That's more telling than any NY Times analysis.

I wonder if our good natured mayor will change his teasing tune on car charges and do an about face butt kiss as he embraces tofu and Cuomo? Prolly.

Cuomo is a left wing whack job and always has been. but he doesn't have that Paris Hilton Jersey shore endearing quality that Obama does. Hopefully that means he could never win a national election. If the country survives the next four years it most definitely could not survive a term of Cuomo on top of Obama. assuming Obama doesn't run a third time.

What conservative mantra did Cuomo ever assume? The tax cut that was a tax increase? Only increasing state spending by billions instead of tens of billions?

Gov. Cuomo: “Progressive and dynamic”
Today Gov. Cuomo in his third annual address to the Legislature, reaffirmed he is his father's son, and a hero to 'Progressives' like myself. Gov. Cuomo thinks in big ball terms, not tolerating small ball ideas for growth in NYS. I've had my differences with Gov. Cuomo over the establishment of a Democratic Senate Majority, but I tell you now it's impossible not to admire this Governor. I hope he understands that my criticisms were heartfelt political observations and never personal. Today the Governor showed me he was his own man, but definitely Mario Cuomo's son, and a leader in the realm of ‘Progressive’ political thinking in NYS; and possibly for the nation in 2016.

I saw him about a year ago at an Albany mall with his entourage. He was in a shoe store trying on a pair of Birkenstocks.

I like Cuomo's accent. He also has good hair, and that's always a plus.

I caught the newsclip of his speech on the news yesterday. He was shrieking like a crazy person. Not necessary.

I think his "progressiveness" if it comes to pass will bankrupt NYS. The last one out, turn off the lights.

That Mikey thinks Gov Fool is a good man comes as no surprise. They share views of what the future of NY should entail. We need to invest, which mean spend, which means tax, or, pass the bill to the kids. We need to regulate more. Which means loss of jobs, more agencies and government workers, more public sector jobs. More bucks on education. The fact that NYers have sacrificed and are at the top of the nation in education spending means nothing to a Mikey/Cuomo type. They want more. And guess where its gonna come from? And all this is called being progressive. Trouble is, it never leads to progress. Now, it makes Mikey types feel good, but like most all his ideas, they only result in your kids having no jobs, no future. But Mikey, he no care about that. He's too busy promoting himself as a thinking, Donkey party stooge. If only he was right about something, anything. Trouble is, he never is. And you and your kids suffer. For two generations, we've sent our best kids away to other parts of the country because of people like Cuomo and Mikey. Didja hear any mention of the Sixty Three BILLION Dollar Debt the state has? Second only to Kalifornia, another progressive state in the Mikey mold. I promise to tell you where to mail my (untaxed) retirement money. Please stay progressive for a bit longer. Listen to the Gov, he da man.

Cuomo has delivered to date:

NYS under Cuomo has created one out five of all the new jobs in America. That's 20% pal and that's what a good 'Progressive' Governor can do for starters. You people wanted to elect Crazy Carl, sorry that didn't fit into NYS voters plans of what NYS should be nor or in the future.

"I hope he understands that my criticisms were heartfelt political observations and never personal."

MCM...You must remember that when LIBERALS speak they are LYING!! Cuomo stated that NY produced 1 in 5 jobs in the nation....NOT!! Right from the Bureau Of Labor Statistics U.S Department of Labor which I just looked up the Numbers of Job created for the past year are as follow 1'661'200 jobs were created in the past year. Twenty percent of the above number is 332'240 jobs....New Yorks number of the above total is 88,600 jobs....which means the FACTUAL NUMBER of JOBS created was 5.3%.....NOT 20% as the Cuomo stated!
Remember, when politicians speak...look up the facts for yourself. Thank you, have a good day!

MCM...according to the latest stats for population available, there are approx 19'465'197 people in the NY. There are also approx 311'591'917 people in the United States which means as a percentage of the U.S, NY = 6.2% of the total U.S population which means Cuomo's 5.3 of job creation is sub-par...he should have at least created 6.2%.

Oh Yeah, Mike. Cuomo is doing just great. Go tell that to the latest graduating class who had to leave. Tell that to the Comptroller who warns us of the $63BILLION dollar debt, the highest 'cept for Kalifornia. Yeah Mikey, we're livin' in such a well functioning state. Clearly, you like screaming Governors. Do you have experience with that type of thing?

This is a great state to live in. If you're like Mikey, and don't work, you're in Nirvana.
