Freedom of Expression or a Step Too Far? | WWNY TV 7

This story has network news written all over it...A Fort Drum soldier living in Copenhagen NY flying her US flags upside down to protest the reelection of President Barack Obama.
FOX would love it as a way of advancing the narrative that our military heroes are wary of the President....and MSNBC would love it as an example of latent racism among the birther crowd.

In any event, once this hits an assignment desk in the real world, something will likely happen.
As for the owner of the flag, if she is a soldier I am sure there will be some counseling from her boss on Monday about just who the Commander in Chief is.

The U.S. Flag Code states;
§176. Respect for flag
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

To display the flag with the union down because you don't like the President is just plain wrong. There is no extreme danger to life or property! If the person is a soldier, that soldier just disrespected the Commander in Chief, like him or not.

If she had made a spoof film about Islam she would be in the brig for a year. But flying the flag upside down would probably please Obama. He is the guy that quit wearing his flag lapel pin. And since Obama wants to destroy America, why would he care about the flag?

Understand her sentiments. But she is sure asking for trouble from her superior officers, I would expect.

11:40's writing would certainly put into question if she is using the upside down flag properly. It can be argued, however, that our lives and our property are in extreme danger. Anyone who is struggling to keep their taxes paid now and are faced with ever higher taxes we know are coming would certainly be able to argue their property is in extreme danger. As far as our lives are concerned, it's not that big of a stretch from the continually icreased restrictions on our 1st Amendment to being in danger for saying what we think. The guy who got blamed for the terrorists attacks overseas because of his stupid vidio is still in jail the last I knew. How many people dare to disipline their kids in public anymore without risking getting arrested and jerked around by their heels? Will Rodgers once made a remark that once a year, for one day, there should be open season on Senators. If you think he could make that remark today without being paid a visit by the Secret Service, and being publicly ostricized, you are not paying attention. I believe a good case can be made for flying the flag upside down under the law as stated by 11:40.

Oh and by the way, repect is something that has to be EARNED! You don't deserve respect just because you have some fancy title. Respect the office of President? Of course. But that doesn't mean person holding the office has earned anyones repect.

I find the picture troubling, as troubling as the fact that we are in extreme danger to life and property. Those who feel they are not in danger have not assessed the situation properly.

Not many folks fly the flag correctly anyway, Its left out in the rain, not taken down at night, When I mail anything I put the stamp on upsidedown(It's a sign of distress).

From the news article:

“She says Obama is trying to destroy the country and this is her expression of disapproval.”

Why yes, of course… “Obama is trying to destroy the country…”

See folks, that’s the great about this country -- even the profoundly ignorant and mentally deficient among us have the right to express their opinion.

I didn't know about the rain part. I believe it is considered OK to fly the flag at night as long as it is lighted, correct? Doesn't really matter, anyway. I lowered my flag Nov. 7th, cleaned it and stored it away. Whether I ever fly it again remains to be seen.

At this point, I expect that flying the Jolly Rodger would be more appropriate.

This employee of the US government failed to respect the commander and chief . This lowlife needs to disciplined and have their rank cut.

5:05 and 9:14's remarks pretty much illustrate 1:07's point now don't they?

Hey 1:22 perhaps you should hide in your cave or bomb shelter with the other extremists that LOST this election and can't deal with the reality that your conspiracy theories and other insane posturings are bunk rejected by the majority on November 6 .

Deal with it >you and others like you are isolated in the minority and will be subjected to further disappointments until you adapt and deal with reality or leave the country if you are unable

1:07 and 1:22pm’s remarks pretty much illustrate the delusional far rights point of view…

Lest we forget… the TP/GOP excels in overlooking their own mistakes, and yet expects nothing less than absolute perfection from Democrats. They lie constantly and engage in pseudo ‘logical fantastical’ conclusions to the Nth degree.

The far right loons have unquestionably become the most neurotic, narcissistic, despicable, delusional, slanderously, sadistic, and conspiratorial gaggle of goony birds in modern history; of which they are inexplicably proud of.

Then, they shamelessly shout out to the rest of the country (in this case by hanging a flag upside down) their self aggrandized and imagined moral standards, which THEY clearly lack. The TP/GOP has simply become a distorted mass of collective psychopaths that exist solely in their self made echo chamber.

Oh well…more victories for us though, eh?

Oh-so people who disagree with your left posture must leave the country, right? Yep,typical, shout down and minimalize other people's judgement..you would have done well in the inquisition or any other time where people divergent of the popular pov were ostracized, harassed and even put to death.Don't think I will accept your invitation/order to leave..

Rather than hide in a cave those of us that feel as 1:22 would prefer to defend the cause of freedom. One election, no matter how crookedly won, does not end debate. It does not deny us the right to fight for what we believe in. Even if socialist tyrants manage to silence our voices, we will still work silently to regain the free way of life we once had.

My, my, I seemed to have struck a nerve. (or three)

Extremists will continue to lose any future election , parties are obsolete and the new majority has emerged and the demographic wave has landed and will only continue to accellerate . Check birth rate stats by demographic classification if you dont believe it . it is SIMPLE math .

So whatever form of extremism and conspiracy theory one subscribes to will only serve to further isolate them from reality . no one demands that u accepet any point of view , but your cause if unduly extreme will only serve to frustrate you more , for the tide has turned demographically .

Divergence of opinion is fine and civility and moderation from extreme positions of any stripe are a saner a frankly more productive means for governance. At one time extremisim was marginalized and frankly it should be again and i believe in time as this new demographic phenomenon accellerates.

THe U.S. Flag Code has no punishments attached to it. It needs to be looked at and maybe re-written. But until then we citizens should abide by it. If not then why can't I drive as fast as I want to just because I think I should? What is the other flag she is flying?

It is high time that the 61 million Romney voters shut their pie holes and defer to the 65 million majority Obama voters...who come from the bankrupt states...AKA blue states.

10:58 you forgot to mention how the Tea/Pubs only work for the 1%er’s, when you handed 1:22 his a$$ on a platter.

Very well said 8:32am, unfortunately you are probably wasting your breath with these a$$ clowns.

I found that kind of amusing, why it is such a big deal with the flag, upside down, while nobody has a problem to see the american flag on furniture, Tshirts, furniture, motorbikes and so on

If these is an issue, to respect the flag , then the printing of the flag should also not be allowed for all day, fashion and so on purposes.

I think that soldier just used the first amendment and thats her good right

The U.S. Flag Code needs to be re-written as times have changed. The Code states that the flag should NOT be printed on anything that will be a temporary item such as shirts, advertising etc. How many times have we seen the flag carried horizontally in a parade or an athletic stadium, even carried by military in uniform. That is a Code violation! When worn on an Army right sleeve it is facing forward to agree with the free flying noted in the Code. Someone needs to take a look at the Code for updating.

If you voted Obama, you shouldn't own a flag!
