Albany in 2013....Guns Become a Priority, But What Else is Being Cooked Up in the Capital ?

A month ago I would have figured minimum wage would be the big legislative push in Albany, but the Newtown tragedy is going to compel lawmakers to feel they have to pass some kind of gun law, even though NY already has strict laws and the matter will likely become the subject of federal action as well.  For lawmakers, its low hanging fruit.
For those who follow such things, the parlor game for 2013 is seeing how impotent the GOP is in the Senate since their power hinges on the support of Senator Jeff Klein's Independent Democratic Caucus and a disloyal newly elected Dem in NYC. Most observers  think it will all blow up quickly if the GOP takes a stand against the Governor, who gave tacit support to the coalition on the proviso they do his bidding.
It will be interesting to see if Governor Cuomo's grip on the political culture holds or starts to fade.

"Police lost a gun to crazed assassin in NJ Police Station."

My heartfelt sympathy to the 3 officers in NJ who were put in danger, and my prayers are with the officer facing surgery. This unprovoked attack inside a Police station points to the fact that even trained personnel can let a potential assassin steal one of their guns. It's important to look at this incident and think about the NRA proposal of bringing guns into our schools, even with supposedly trained personnel on premises, who might have the same thing happen to them. The gun is then on premises and in the wrong hands, with a killer ready to pull the trigger in a school. I just don’t think a gun in every school in America is a good idea, and it won't make our children safer. Even trained Police let the gun get into the wrong hands!

“Tkaczyk files appeal on the 333 votes tossed out by a Montgomery County Judge”

Cecilia Tkaczyk will hopefully win her appeal to put 333 votes in play, and the election in the 46th Senate District will be decided in her favor, and that will be a beautiful thing for voters in NYS; who have a right to fair elections. The dominos will then start to fall in the New York State Senate and a Democratic Majority will likely emerge.

Mike says "I just don't think it will make kids safer..". You're right Mikey, you just don't think. You just get scared, react, mess your britches, read what your party tells you, then barf up nonsense. Security in schools is not a bad idea. If you really did think you would consider it. But I realize you are in lock step with those who simply want more ineffective laws. What size pants do you wear? We can all chip in and send you some clean ones.

Free$tuff Mikey is right. This latest shooting incident should be studied. Because the only one that died was the bad guy. Thanks to the fact that there was other good guys with guns there.

They will do anything that polishes their image whether or not it makes any difference

Mike think about what really caused the shooting at that school. A lady bought a bunch of guns for a person who was not able to deal with people in any way. Then she took her son to a gun range and showed him how to kill people with the guns. Then she left said guns out and available to a person who still wasn't all there. She died at the hands of her son and he went on a rampage. Is that clear?

Do you know what would have stopped it all? First she could have not bought the guns. But even if she did. Gun shops sell trigger locks for all guns. She could have locked them all up with trigger locks and made sure she had the keys. Still following me?

So if she had done this. She would be alive right now. The son would be alive right now. The kids would be alive right now. Very easy to understand.

Yes, 11:36, WHAT WERE you thinking? Why would the N.Y. politicians address real problems when they have a chance to take more rights away from it's citizens. Schmucks that they are.

MMM once again you only focus on the bad, So has Eric Holder the guns from the Fast And Furious??? Answer us MMM.............

MCM what a relief, Silver and Cuomo to be able to play the Gun Control card to distract from all the other problems. Medicare, the economy, school education, jobs all can take a seat and the fight will be focused on saving the children. MCM what do you think about the sledding at Thomson Park sounds pretty dangerous to me.

“Keep Schools Safe and Gun Free”

An officer was fighting for his life in the Township of Glouchester, NJ today. The person that shot that officer and grazed two others took a gun from a trained police officer. It's obviously tough for even trained personnel to keep a gun out of the hand of a crazed person. I 'm just suggesting it might be a lot tougher for educators with a minimal amount of training, to keep their gun out of the hands of an intruder once it's out of a lock box, or expect a Teacher with little training to use it effectively on that intruder in a school. These people have evil intent on their mind and it takes trained police personnel to deal with that in any case. A serious question that deserves a serious answer, after some serious thought is: “Are guns on school premises the smart way to go, or can we increase security in other ways?” I don't expect to get a serious answer from people that write silly comments here, about a serious subject like 'Gun Control' but I'll bet some serious comments will show up here sooner or later, that support 'Gun Control' in America and safer schools that aren’t loaded with weapons.

Mikey. Your boy's Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the nation. It also leads the nation in gun deaths. After you change your pants, please explain that to us.

“Security in schools is not a bad idea. If you really did think you would consider it.”

It’s not a bad idea providing one has a limited thinking capacity. But for the rest of us that reside on Planet Earth, it’s not only a bad idea; it’s just plain stupid…

Reality: Most of these madmen end up dying, and they calculate that into their plans. So having an armed guard(s) located at schools would not act as a deterrent, as they don't fear death to begin with.

Furthermore, since they map out their attacks with cold calculation, they would simply plan to take out the armed guard(s) first… a perverse challenge, so to speak. The element of surprise is always going to go to the psycho, so there is every chance that he will succeed, and then go on with his killing spree.

Do we have a historic precedent as to the effectiveness of having armed guards on school property… yes, Columbine and Virginia Tech?

Now, if you really want to have a serious discussion, please explain to the rest of us how this obvious truth escapes your thought process, because I have at least a dozen more possible scenarios in my arsenal I would love to discuss with you.

When you ban guns anywhere, you create a Free Fire zone, where criminals know law-abiding folks cant have guns......The NJ incident happened where a female unlocked the cuffs for booking, and he grabbed her handgun, but he was taken out like he should have been...........MMM puts the wrong spin on things as per usual, MMM dont forget the gun meeting with Black Bart........Show up with your ideas.

Its obvious that if no one showed up with a gun, all those school shooters and mall shooters would have kept killing even more people. It is not until they get corned by a good guy with a gun that they choose to take their own lives. I guess that is a chance the anti-gun crowd is willing to take, as long as they get the thrill of taking guns away from good citizens.

I am surprised these anti-gun idiots even want the police carrying guns. I suppose that would be their next banning agenda. If not, then they must think police are godlike to earn the privilege of carrying a defense weapon. Guess what...police are just average everyday men and women...with guns and badges.
