NY21: What in the world happened to Matt Doheny? « The In Box

I will yield to my friends at NPR for their analysis of the Matt Doheny loss. I think this piece hits the high points.

Interesting. I agree with many of those points, but I think the poster who said that character was the biggest hurdle for Doheny got it right. Doheny didn't have a particularly controversial platform, he interacted with countless voters as he criss crossed the district and he demonstrated his commitment by contributing his own money to the campaign. He did everything right (well, most of the time). It was his character that killed him. And every time he tried to craft something to improve that image he made it worse. Unfortunately for him, all the money in the world can't make you a good person.

St. Lawrence county is what happened to Doheny. If you would of only offered them some free$tuff...

Oh man, mayor. Middle Class Mike actually posted on that site that he was at least partially responsible for Doheny's demise. Oh no.......you created a monster by giving him a little credit on your site. Granted you simply said that he picked the right horse but he has somehow translated that into actually being responsible for the Owens victory. Now come the next election we will have to listen to hours and hours of his grossly redundant lectures on the radio and blogs that much more. He feels empowered. And remarkably self-important.

Everybody run!!!!!!!

Bill Owen's Character and Leadership ability was Key:

At the beginning of the campaign I stated here that its focus would ultimately be decided by "Character and Leadership' and what candidate had the ability to understand the plight of the Middle and Working Classes. Mr. Doheny was not representative of sound Character or demonstrated 'Leadership' ability in the political arena. The attempt to buffer his Wall Street background in many ways exasperated the disconnect felt by many voters that were seeking a candidate who understood their 'Pocket' book issues. Mr. Dohney could never lay claim to that understanding and I called him on it for three years. I was certainly one of the 'Things' that happened to Matt Doheny. As a Rockefeller Republican I found his alliance with Mark Barrie and the Tea Party extremists something worth fighting against and did so very effectively. I proud of the Owens victory, it required the effort of a great many good people, and the district will benefit greatly from it in coming years.

Oh my. MCM copied it and posted it here too. And I thought Doheny was the one with the big ego.

It was character that done Doheny in. Owens has character. Doheny IS a character.

Did I hear correct that MCM said on your noon show that it is rare for the incumbant to win the popular vote in his second term?? What friggin world is that guy living in? That's as rare as a Mcdonald's doublecheeseburger. Can't you limit his calls??

The Mayor and the Press have tried to minimize the role of the Middle Class in deciding this election. I don't have to convince anyone of the role I played in keeping Mr. Doheny from being elected, it’s a well known story with people in the know, which you clearly are not my sad Tea Party voter. It was never about self-promotion for me, but always about keeping Mr. Dohney from being elected, because in my mind Congressman Bill Owens was the better man. Now when it comes to self-promotion all I can say is this blog is the template for many, but not for yours truly.

MCM has lost his mind. BTW, what was it that Mr. Owens ran on?? Absolutely nothing except that Doheny was a bad guy. And that is good enough in this pathetic state. And this is no means an endorsement for Doheny. But this Mike guy has lost it... Hassig could use an operative like this.

I agree with the others. Doheny did come across that he was trying to "craft" his life to fit a certain profile. But then when he would slip and actually be himself the disparity became obvious. He wanted us to see him as a local, but he could not hide his Wall Street attitude. He wanted us to see him as a family man but everything from the cheating to the fake dog to the campaigning separately from his wife just a couple days after the wedding made us believe instead that it was all pretend and forced. He wanted us to see him as a likable guy, referring to people as "my man (insert name here)" and slapping everyone on the back but the mass exodus by his own campaign staff made us believe that he was difficult and argumentative. Essentially that everything was all pretend.

Some people have the right life and the right personality for politics and some people don't. He made his bed with the life choices he made, and how those choices affected him personally, and now he has to lie in that bed.

Middle Class Mike,I don't mean to be rude but you are just one of hundreds of people who comment on these blogs and many anti-Doheny people are far more eloquent than you (check out Candid's post on NPR). To be honest, most of the time people see your name at the top of a blog comment they skip over it because you always say the same thing. You actually might be more effective if you posted anonymously. At least more people would read it. It's cute that you think you were such a factor in the election though.

I said it the other night.. Most people running for office usually have served in some manner in their communities, helped individuals and are really local orientend. I dont mean an appointment to the library board by a supporter but run for local office and do some charity work etc..
No Doheny.. He spent years away and when McHugh got appointed he knew an opening was going to give him a chance. he moved back here, but he didnt change his habits of being obnoxious brash and bold and party boy image... Instead of community service he reached into his back pocket and tried three times to buy a seat in Congress.
His campaign was poorly run but most it lacked heart thus he couldnt gain the trust of anyone except party diehards.. He bragged about the miles he traveled and the people he met.. WOW a guy with thirty million dollars has no other committments like a work schedule to keep why would it be hard to travel.. He got married just before the elections for an illussion obviously. Thats after he humiliated the woman by making an ass of himself in Washington..
He self destructed and couldnt be trusted.. MCM is right, was right and did stop this Ass dead in his tracks... Keep up the good work MIKE...

Owens must feel like such a schmuck for spending millions of dollars on his campaign. If he had only known that all he needed was MCM copying and pasting the same blog comments again and again in order to win the race he could have saved all that money. Bummer. Just imagine though, MCM will be courted by every candidate in every election going forward! Clearly he is the secret weapon. Go MCM!

I just laughed my a** off. Mike is very important to people who are "in the know". Classic. Actually, i think reality is something more along these lines: mike was to Owens and the democrats what Hassig was to the Green Party. Their fundamental basic beliefs may be ok, but all the crazy antics dilute their messages to the point where they both just become punchlines. Now his self-congratulations is icing on the cake. It doesn't get better than that!

Mayor, thank you so much for providing multiple venues for people like MCM to chime in and entertain the rest of us!
