If You Say You Don't Have an ID....You Are Lying

One of the oldest ways to get served if you are underage (not to die in war, just to have a beer) is to come in to the bar with an of-age friend and then you go to the rest room or hang around across the room in a non chalant manner.
Tonight about 530 two guys came in...one a well groomed 40ish guy, the other I couldn't see as he hung out by the juke box with a cell phone on his ear....
The older guy ordered two Bud Lights and as I retrieved them, I was suspicious and asked to see the other guy's ID....The well groomed one, an almost Trooper-like guy in appearance, said he doesn't have an ID...Oh really ? What's he doing in the Mayor's Bar then, as we don't serve such folks. ?..  Who doesn't have ID ? and why would the well-groomed guy know if he did or didn't ?
Then the well groomed guy walked over to his cohort and said something and they both left.
This didn't look like two younger guys just trying to get a beer...Looked like a sting, as I read on Newzjunky the law was on OT for the weekend.

Looks Like you dodged a bullet. One would think that the law enforcement would be a little more clever in their "sting operations"

The cop was going to purchase the drink and then give it to the minor? And that would be your fault?
Sounds like he really did forget his ID and they wouldn't serve him at Clueless so they tried your bar next.

Sneaky way to entrap a tax paying business, but hey it's new york.

@1:14 - That's exactly how it would have worked, and YES, the bar and the bartender would have been cited as a result. If you're selling booze, whether at a bar or at a retail store, you really need to pay attention to not only the purchaser, but to the purchaser's companion(s) as well.

Must be they weren't pretty enough or weren't wearing provacative enough clothing ... Seems like a know fact- an age old tradition - that the mayors bar - actually the mayor himself will serve anyone who is pretty enough and or who will gamble enough with no questions asked ..24/7 ....

How do you figure Clueless Tavern into this story? Of all of the bars in Watertown you choose that one.. Which, isn't even open at said time.. Regardless, good for you Mr. Mayor for not falling into a possible trap! I enjoy your place and would hate to see any negativity come your way.

To 9:56. You make anonymous allegations. "Known to who" ?
Step up. Come see me with your assertions. Anyone can sit in their jammies, be a tough guy and hit the send button.
Can you say it in person and back it up ? In your case, it appears not so, but I ran your comment anyway.

Wow...Some people are brutal. Jeff- I've known you for close to 30 years, even worked for you at one time.
One thing is not in question; you simply do not serve minors. First time I've ever posted here, but these folks
got my dander up a bit on this beautiful Saturday morning.

Happy Thanksgiving.

You did offer them Quick Draw tickets though right?

Amazing what bars go through in new York. Also amazing how people talk so poorly about them. People drink to much and cause problems but it's never their fault. And then they slander the establishment. Kind of pathetic.

Thank God. I don't want to have to walk to the yuppy bars on Factory.

Again 1233, you anonymously have your facts awry. You have to be 21 and prove it to play Quick Draw in a bar.

I'm not convinced that an undercover officer could purchase an adult beverage, give it to a minor, then go on to pin that crime on the proprietor.

I am sure if this was actually a sting we would have read about other bar owners who fell for the trick by now. Unless the mayors blog has earned him a special entrapment technique that no one else has been subject to.

The clueless comment was just a way of implying that either the mayors bar is a gay bar or that all undercover cops are gay. Because since the beginning of time, it has always been funny to kid heterosexuals that they are actually gay. But don't take my word for it...watch comedy central roast or Tosh.0

I am with 1211 mayor. You are among the most responsible bar owners. You must be to last all these years

I walk down every once in awhile and have never seen horns on Jeff's head once. Look for the Devil else where.

It's bothersome to hear the mayor of the city so leery of law enforcement. Stop acting like they are trying to "get you" for something. If you're in the bar business it goes with the territory. Not like they are singling you out for something, if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. Sounding a little paranoid.

He should be more leary of that Gorman guy.
Jeff gets along with most cops but is rightly leary of the State of NY.

It is a breath of fresh air to hear Jeff speak so candidly about the sad state of today's law enforcement. The days are long gone when police work concentrated on the bad guys. Today everyone is a criminal by definition. That is why all the friends of cops have those little stickers on their windshields.

How do you know Jeff gets along with most cops 4:16? Take a poll?

I think drinking should be outlawed like smoking has been.

In the long run it doesn't mean poop. Jeff did it right and they left. Good for him.

"I'm not convinced that an undercover officer could purchase an adult beverage, give it to a minor, then go on to pin that crime on the proprietor."

You're dead wrong. Simple as that. Get a job in the industry and test it yourself. Sooner or later, you'll find yourself "convinced", embarrassed, a little poorer, and probably out of a job as well.

I read the State Police press release and you were right mayor.
They make the buy legally..give it to the underage guy and then charge you with "providing alcohol to a minor", not selling it.
Still a two or three thousand dollar fine and some humiliation.
