A municipal ordinance to ban bath salts is high on symbolism and low on effectiveness. However, the sentiment is understandable as this latest permutation on the drug scene has policy makers and enforcers scrambling to be seen as doing something before more faces are gnawed off and more people are hanging around in a daze doing nothing for society other than cause problems.
This week's civil suits against select head shops is designed to do the same thing. Make it cumbersome and uncomfortable to sell so called designer drugs.
Bath salts and related items have garnered pubicity because of their open sale in storefronts instead of on street corners.

Albany took away local authority to ban dog breeds but we can still ban most anything else we want to locally? We should ban smoking.
Mayor, you should attempt at making an effort to do something effective like Utica is doing, you might find it refreshing.
It's devastating if you know someone who is addicted to glass cleaner/bath salts. There is no help out there because it is not illegal. The head shops should be charged with murder. I know of one that has not even been public ally reprimanded as of yet. The owner must have an "infectious" personality. I even have a photo of someone walking out of the place with glass cleaner in hand! A theft was reported to the police but no arrest was made because the owner did not want to press charges. Sick! If he had pressed charges, the public would know what he is selling. He should be run out of town! Do we really need those shops in our town....or even on the border of our town.
Call your Senator and get some tought laws passed.. This isnt chile cookoffs this is life and death...
Its not that easy to just do something, folks. We don't know as yet if what Utica did will be effective in any way. And the answer certainly isn't to attempt to outlaw this crap city by city. There has to be some answers and action attempted statewide.
I'm sorry, but that that sounds like a cop-out to me. While everyone is waiting for an answer to come from "above", stores continue to sell these drugs knowing very well what people are doing with them, more people are becoming addicted to the drugs, violence is increasing and.....some people still want to continue to burry their heads in the sand while waiting for someone else to fix the problem. It is sickening. This citizen is about fed up. I am watching what the drug does to a person and I have no help. What is pending for this person? Jail, suicide or death. What is pending for the "drug dealers" that own these head / pornography shops....perhaps a slap on the hands. That does not sound like justice to me. If our city becomes aware of something that is going on that could be harmful to people, our city should take care of it! If an eating establishment fails an inspection, it is BIG news but in our beautiful community, a man can open a porn shop and sell drugs that are killingpeople and ruining lives ......all while making a profit without any recourse. Please post the photos of all porn/head shop owners in the paper so we can warn our children about them just as we do child predators!
