Hockey a Go As Council Approves Tentative Agreement

City Council informally agreed to host the Privateers hockey team at the Fairgrounds Arena this winter and will formally approve a franchise agreement for the team next week.
Lawmakers questioned team owner Nicole Kirnan and Parks Superintendent Erin Gardner about the logistics of fitting a pro team into the schedule of existing activities at the facility.
In the end, there was agreement it was worth a try and I think if successful the team could be a plus for the City but also spur additional use and investment in the Arena.
      Let's get behind the effort.
                                        NO MORE GREEN CLOCKS
Council also concurred with a legal opinion that the current contract for maintenance of the Town Clock doesn't allow colored faces for different holidays.
A kerfuffle had erupted over the issue and Council wisely decided to depart that briar patch.
Lawmakers also decided to sell a Mohawk Street parcel, once home to Rose Ward, at auction this summer. Other resolutions were approved including one for a new rest room for Marble Street Park.

Ol' Shyawn Henneshee will be deeply disappointed that he cannot manipulate the council next year. This year was easy for him. Only an idiot would use a church tower to advertise a drunk fest.

An auction for selling public property? Now there is a novel idea. Sell at an auction to the highest bidder? or sell to the bidder council likes the best or made a backroom deal with?

So stupid! Does anyone have real work to do around here that we are worried about the color of a clock!

While I can see the clock color deal as just some real pain in the butt for the church , they don't feel bad about taking up a lot of city parking at times. So where's the balance? Are they part of the life in the square or not? Some people took great pleasure in seeing the green clock. Are they not in that? Making people feel good? I still have never understood a church at all. What are they for? Are they for the heads of the chruch or the people?

*Yawn* This is what we have to waste time concerning ourselves with? I think there many more important issues in this city to deal with.

The color green does not denote drinking. The color green on St. Patrick's day is a nod to the Irish people and the Irish culture. That is simply what Mr. Hennessey is doing. He is proud to be Irish and what better time to celebrate being Irish than St. Patrick's Day. The color red frequently signifies evil does that mean we should omit the color red from the clock face during Christmas? I am an Irish non-drinker and if anything, this stupid fiasco makes me feel unwelcome at that church. They should be conveying a feeling of love and open arms. The only thing they are conveying is intolerance.

Sounds like the logical solution was reached with the clock. Glad that is put to rest. Now, what will the next mess be? Maybe the little St Jude statue on Washington st.? Will this be the Watertown version of the Potsdam property owner dispute? You know... the one where the yard on Market st is full of toilets. What's your take mayor, how do you feel about zoning? This should be hilarious! LOL

We get it 12:23. If other CHURCH'S don't want to help Shyawn advertise a drinking contest they YOU will take your toys and go home and pout. If others don't support you then THEY are intolerant. You must still be drunk.

I am an ex military wife and have lived many places ..this is the most ridiculous town i have ever seen...fighting over the color of a clock...we have much more important things to worry about..that clock was so beautiful when you looked up at it on the different holidays and it was a different color...shame on you all....cant you just enjoy something for what it is and not "read" into it....i think some people in this town need to get a life and let the other people in this town enjoy the "simple" things in life....and keep the city counsel out of it...they have other stuff to "fight" about....

FYI: St. Patricks Church on S. Massey WAS NOT lit up green in honor of St. Patricks Day. The Irish Fest did just fine w/o their endorsement.

Yup, Watertown Goes Green is not a drunkfest. Tell that to the people who had to clean up the barf from the elevators in the state office building last year. The most important part of the party is the alcohol.

I wonder what God in His infinite wisdom is saying now about the clock tower. . Perhaps "They took a dull church tower and brought it to the attention of all with colors so it would be different and by doing so that when they saw it they saw My love." If it is dull and white we pay no attention, but when something is illuminated with colors we see it and in seeing the clock tower we see God. How narrow minded religion has become. Thank God I can look at a blade of green grass and see The Creator and know He is smiling because I saw beyond what modern day religious beliefs teach. How sad God must be that we are so petty.

Youre right its all about the drinking, at our expense.

5:51 is correct. When the color of a clock is a major issue then there are no issues. My question is, why is there a clock on a church? Shouldn't it be a calendar with sunday in color?

It is not the color of the clock and you dorks know it. It is about using a church to publicize a party. It wasn't appropriate. Please don't be so stupid.

I am a proud board member of The North Country Goes Green and would like to share with those who may not be aware of all the good the Irish Festival has done in the community for 27 yrs.The original purpose of the Festival 27 yrs ago was to bring children from war torn Ireland to our beautiful north country to spend a peaceful summer ..as the festival has grown over the years we are able to extend our charitable work into other areas donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to local student scholarships ( in fact today we presented 9 scholarships at a lovely reception at the Elks club)DPAO, YMCA, The Childrens home, Lewis County Opportunities, Urban Mission, Food Banks, the list goes on.
Sean Henessey was not the only one of our board who approached council regarding the lighting of the clock.Sean is the contributing organizer who brings authentic Irish culture to our community with world known Irish Music and entertainment. Will the clock make or break our mission in the community.. no ... I think not.

No one disputes the fact that your Green thing does good deeds. We are talking about a single issue. The church shouldn't have been used as a billboard for your party. You people seem to have an inflated opinion of yourselves.
