Critics say its unfair to the poorest students....Well, no it isn't...You can always leave the phone at home even though I know its viewed as an appendage these days...And by the way, if you are affluent enough to have a phone, you have already decided what your priorities are.
The message NYC schools are sending is a good one that will benefit students in the work place later on.

But Mr. Mayor you forgot you don't have to be affluent to own one of these cellphones. Some get the Government freebies that you and I pay for with one of those fees on our phone bill.
Cell phones in school, if turned off, should pose no problem ... however, if students turn them on and/or try to use them during class, then take them away and call their parents ... second time: They lose the phone and that is Mom and Dad's responsibility.
