Nobody thought it would be a race....and in the end, it wasn't.
Self made millionaire and Alex Bay native Matt Doheny rolled to victory in the GOP Congressional primary. Doheny doused political novice Kellie Greene by a larger than expected 72-28 margin, according to unofficial tallies late Tuesday.
Turnout was in single digits and the victory party crowd at the Italian American Club featured as many campaign staffers as supporters. This race never really caught fire as the underfunded Greene tried to live off the land against a well heeled and well oiled Doheny effort.
However, Doheny benefited by tuning his message and his organization for the much steeper hill ahead...a second run at Rep. Bill Owens in what is considered one of the Nation's swing races.
In remarks to supporters, Doheny repeated the mantra ahead....the Obama-Owens team...the moniker comes after Mr. Owens announced he will not attend the Democratic National Convention, presumably to avoid the linkage to Mr. Obama.
Health care, the deficit, and the economy loom as the issues ahead for Doheny, while Democrats will no doubt try to draw personal comparisons.
For tonights winner, a busy week ahead as he prepares for his gala St. Lawrence River wedding to fiance and NYC lawyer Mary Reidy.

Smaller than my 75 to 25 prediction but still a good win.
She wasn't really a meaningful opponent. Now we get to take on Nancy herself. Nancy, will you take questions from residents from the north country? There's no point in us going through your furniture man, or whatever he does for you.
Yawn
Now we have to decide which is worse a liberal republican or a liberal democrat
Who would support Greene: she is an attitude on feet. Appears out of no where, acts as if she is a gift to us, shuns the media, screams about people looking at her Facebook site and has no business running with her own reported personal debt.
Seriously, she didn't even give herself a chance and her attitude after her loss speaks for itself.
She really needs to become a little grounded in life and how about make some money and pay off her credit card debt.
To bad he won. Looks like my Repub vote will be going to Mr. Owens as I just can't vote for this person. I don't believe in him.
Doheny had better offer more than just more "anti-Obama/Owens" talking points or soundbytes. Or,
maybe that's all he needs with the anti-everything attitude of this "new" GOP we see today ...
He and the GOP are not offering much in the way of new ideas, however. That could pose a problem, but will it, or does it matter any more at all? We are about to find out.
Is he taking care of his Mother Mr. Mayor? He better be.
Doheney is just another car in the republican train helping the democrats take us down the tracks to communism.
Danny the democrats don't have any new ideas either, their ideas are at least as old as Marx or you can even find democrat ideas origonating back before Christ walked on earth, when property rights did not exist and protecting the boarders was not done by Rome.
FTR...we don't want new ideas from Republicans we want the ideas that our founding fathers gave us in the Constitution, back again.
New ideas, Dannie? What exactly does that mean? More FreeStuff for people like you? More vote buying with money we don't have? More ignoring budget deficits? More pretending hatred of corporations will balance the budget? More open borders? More illegal gun running operations designed to initiate more gun laws? More tax breaks for people like you who have such an o' so tough life? More ideas about which laws they want to enforce and which can gain some votes with certain special interests? Screw you and your "ideas".
Tick tock and all that..
Applause and standing ovation for 5:08
I usually cringe qt the Danny comments, but this time I actually see his point. I too have grown tired of the pelosi/Obama talk coming from the Doheny campaign. We get it. Doheny won't vote with the democrats. But in a time where Congress has been rendered totally ineffective due to partisan nonsense, I would like to hear him comment on how he plans to be effective in a time of such extreme congressional deadlock. Just saying "no" to Obama's crappy policies isn't enough.
11:12, you're a damn Fool. The best thing we can hope for with a government that tramples our rights, spends money it does not have, screws up everything it touches, lies, runs up deficits, and breaks laws to buy votes, is to be, as you say, "ineffective". Why the hell would we want this juggernaut of illegality to be effective? Sober up. What are you wishing for, bigger deficits and even fewer freedoms? And rest assured, right after the Great One's reelection huge tax increases are on the way. Welcome to friggin Greece.
Applause and standing ovation for 3:52 the only thing you forgot was to call out 11:12 as a liar. He doesn't really believe what he said. He is an operative for Owens trying to appear reasonable and appeal to the makers.
Hey 3:52 - your comment is so extremest, I am not rue how you jumped as far as you did based on 11:12's comment. I don't think 11:12 was saying he wanted bigger deficits or anything else you ranted about. He was just asking for something more from a politician than just shooting down current or recently discussed policies. Is it bad to ask for clarity on just how Doheny plans to gain congressional favor for the policies he is promoting in his campaign? Owens does it to. He simply claims he is moderate enough to bridge the congressional divide, but I too am looking for a bit more detail on just how any of these politicians plan to operate while in office. What they will proactively do, not just what they will vote against.
By the way, I can't speak for 11:12, but I haven't had a drop to drink tonight. At least not yet!! Lighten up 3:52. You appear to have some anger issues.
8:27 - anyone appearing reasonable MUST be a liar.
1:52 you know that is not true.
But we know someone here that is merely trying to appear reasonable and he definitly is a liar.
Yes yes my girl 1:50am. Call me an extremist but counter NOTHING that I had to say. Which part do you wish to disagree with, my little twerp with no backbone? Every single aspect I noted is a fact. You offer no argument whatsoever. You just wimper some teary crap about my extremism. "Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice." I'm sorry you're not drunk. That would explain your cowardly behavior.
10:32, there are only two candidates on the ballot. Doheny, and Nancy Pelosi. Owens is not allowed to do, say, vote, or even suggest anything that Nancy doesn't clear beforehand. If the healthcare bill didn't teach you that, there is little hope. Makes your choice.
