The cone of silence came off City Council's choice of a new manager with the announcement lawmakers will meet tomorrow to ratify a contract to hire Sharon Addison to a two year term as the city's chief executive.
Council started with 37 candidates two months ago and has carefully and collegially whittled the field. Last Monday Council designated Ms.Addison as their choice pending negotiation of a contract. City Manager John Krol and I worked on that, sealing the deal yesterday in a phone call.
Last weekend Council interviewed two men and two woman who had become finalists for the post.
Mr. Krol had acted a facilitator for the recruitment.
Council was in a tougher spot in January but upon my recommendation Krol was hired and Council drew together, working quietly and for the most part discreetly.
Ms. Addison's ties to the North Country and her strong desire to relocate here were also factors. In fact all the finalists had strong ties to upstate.
Ms. Addison will meet the media at a meeting tomorrow morning and will start her duties on July 16.
We welcome her to the City of Watertown.

So goes the hiring of the City Manager.. Ogdensburg started about the same time however with Mayor Nelsons politics and the lack of any getgo on our council we still are at square one..
Mike Morley seems content to accept Watertowns leftovers and second and third choices. Nelson dosnt care as he has got all of the attention he can handle with NYSCOM while trying to make himself attractive to some lobbying firm or still cant be ruled out for future politics.. Possibly MAtt Doheny could use a good backstabber on his team......
To bad a local wasnt hired.......
$120,000 A YEAR??? Mayor I bet you would have taken it for $60,000 and they would not have had to pay to move you. What was the outgoing one paid? You rant about what the schools pay where is your outrage on this???
Wow 20 grand more than what Mary was making after her decades of service! Moving and storage expenses! Just another sign that our elected officials are truly incompetent. Vote out all of the incumbents at election time people. I would say this is unbelievable but we have come to expect this utter garbage from our "leaders."
For $120K she is going to have to hit the ground with her feet running.
Good luck!
I know a guy who would have done it for ten bucks an hour and he is local. Does weekends in jail but a really great guy. And he's local.
If she just collects the money the other manager didn't the city will still be ahead.
Face it, schools have bundles of people who make that much money. Who cares how much she makes. The real question is will she have the nerve to control Gene Hayes and make him do his job. That department was the cause of most of these problems, yet Mr Hayes just skips along unquestioned. That's where Mary failed, miserably.
513 is right, a bit pricey.
That's the way this usually works. Someone is there for years and years and makes a salary. Then some connected family gets their kid to come home and we pay them a crapload more. I'm sure she was unemployed when we found her. We will find out who she knows shortly.
