Dog Days Don't Include Wednesdays at the Farmer's Market

Today  was the first Watertown Farmer's Market  sans dogs since last January's passage of a law limiting canines at certain public events. Organizers had wanted something done after a mauling of a child last summer.  City Council Member Roxanne Burns proposed the restriction which only affects high density events on public property.

How about a NO CATS law? You can never be too carefull. How are you gonna feel if Trixie scratches some punk's eyes out? It never ends.

Because of this law I will not visit the farmers market any more.
I own dogs but never brought them with me to the Market.

Dogs need to be socalized and that is exactly the problem here.
Keeping them away from each other, chained in backyards away from human beings will make the problem worse.
In Europe dogs can be brought everywhere stores, trains, metro, markets, cafes on Vacation
and they are better socialized, used on people and well behaved.

I am a retired teacher from Europe I used to bring my dog a German shepard mix to class on a regular basis.

Children need to be teached how to act with dogs.
They can not approach a dog from the side or the back. Dogs can not handle a lot of little children at once, when they are not used to it. They are easy irritated from unpredicted movement of little children/ toddlers.
My dog was used on 25 children at the time.
I still never aloud more then four children to approach him.
They had to ask first and let him smell their hand.
They always had to approach him from the front, never from the side or the back.

In this unfortunate incident both parties made mistakes in my oppinion.
It was not just the dogs fault, who might be maybe just be overwhelmed, with a couple of little children and their moves.

I hope the best for the recovery of the little boy.

Well if the law prevents 5:56 from going to the Farmer's Market then it has already proven to be the best law ever passed.

PS our forefathers left Europe and came here because Europe sucks.

Oh Good God, not THIS nonsense again!!! I can't wait for the self-appointed City Crier to get up on his soapbox again, trying to convince us all about the benefits of dog parks. I can't take another six months of listening to him go on and on and on.....

I'm disappointed that the law was passed. It was unnecessary and only fed into the mindset that government can and must fix all ills. It happened once. And now the situation has been "fixed". It was a stupid overreaction. Typical of the times we live in.

On the TV news the DUI car crashing doggie 'do-er' did not past the no dogs sign. Hmmmmmmm.

THE WAY I SEE IT, IF RETART DOG OWNERS CAN'T KEEP THEIR DAMN CANINES AWAY FROM OTHER PEOPLE IN PUBLIC PLACES. THEN THEY DESERVE THIS LAW. NEED STRICTER ENFORCEMENT IN THE CITY STREETS. TOO MANY DOGS & CATS RUNNING AROUND LOOSE.

When are they going to ban sugary drinks over 24 ounces at the market?

I agree with 8:58 AM

Responsible Dog Owners keep their dogs always on (short ) leash when in public.
Its beyond me anyway, why dog owners can not train their dogs to stay away from people or not to jump on people. I had this behavior too.

When I walked my dogs, it happenend a couple of times, that dogs run out of the house or open backyards and attacked my dog.

In my neigborhood are people who let their dogs run around free or even kick them out, on the street when they are not at home. Because these are smaller dogs like beagle or cockerspaniel mixes nobody seem to care.

and to 7:47 PM.
Even if Europe sucks in a lot of things, I am sure your forfathers did not came overhere, because the way dogs are kept overthere.
Every country has good and bad things/ laws ec. Its up to us to learn from it.

The leash laws are much more enforced in Europe, for special in the cities.
A Policeman can write a 50 or 100 Euro Ticket on the spot when a owner has his dog walking with out a leache outside of the dessignated areas for dog runs.
A dog taken to the dogpound and bailed out cost more too and also the dog tax is much higher. In a big city around 200 Euro a Year.

That keeps a lot of unresponsible people and people who think a dog is a toy away from holding a dog in the first place.
