It now looks like Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush and Senator Joe Griffo will join the ranks of state lawmakers unopposed this year. A changing election calendar and uncertainties over redrawing district lines surely contributed, but really, who would want to run for office ?
First you need an interest in the topic....maybe even a knowledge of how a bill becomes a law. Then you need to want to travel a lot and represent the people's interests against a sometimes obstinate bureaucracy.
Well, you have to have a lot of money for a campaign and then you had best be either retired, self employed, wealthy, or willing to give up whatever occupation you have now. (What boss is going to put up with you taking time off to campaign ?)
You need to be obsequious to a party and willing to say outlandish things to endless people you see at front doors and parades.
It's all to get a job that pays OK by NNY standards but is still less than most people with that skill set already make.
Then you have to line up to have people anonymously ridicule your weight, marital status, fashion sense and whatever else they can think of.
Sinde most challengers lose, you must almost be a masochist to even think of getting involved in running for state office...Most are not and most don't.

As long as we keep getting our freeStuff then there is no reason to be interested in running...even if the job didn't come with all the baggage you just listed.
Skill Set, The only skill set an incumbant needs is the backing of the party, as for the pay being OK I'd like to start off at 70K plus loulous, plus retirement, plus healthcare all the while answering questions where to go in state govt. to find what, oh dont forget the "Pork" you get to dispense.
The Chick to the left is disgracing the Flag..........
I want to be disgraced too!
You list reasons not to run for office or get invovled in the process - trying to scare people away - hell, why not. It works that way, but your reasons, even though valid, are weak and those of us who think otherwise, must continue the message of get invovled and try to make a difference.
I hope people truly are not that cynical.
I just wish, Dannie, that you would see something, anything, in a neutral light. I started off listening and considering everything you said, in writing or on the call ins. After awhile, I realized that there is only one thing that matters to you. Party line. Sure, every once in a while you do a token spew of balance. But when it comes down to it, everything you say is based on party line loyalty. You Sir, and people like you, are what has gotten this country into the trouble it is in. You be Pro-Cancer if it was a Democrat program. And you wonder why you are marginalized and dismissed.
Pro cancer is a democratic program. They took the money they would spend on PSA tests and told us they were unnecessary this week as part of the obamacare agenda. they need the money to give to Fluke.
PSA tests prevent more deaths than inoculating little girls from STD's but that doesn't matter because there is less money in it and more potential sex too.
