So called charter schools are the bane of teachers unions, but do they also create a caste system among youngsters as only a fraction of kids who apply will be admitted to the schools whose students score higher on tests ?
The NY Post reports charter school applications are at an all time high as parents seek out the best for their kids, and in essence spurn traditional public education avenues.
Charter schools are not part of the nomenclature of NNY education, but in the city it is a popular alternative to oft neglected urban schools where a janitor is sometimes paid more than a teacher.

You're probably basing that janitor story on one that was floated about a decade ago by 60 minutes. They found a guy who was paid $150k and never showed up. That same story has been pushed as a regular occurrance, again by the teachers union. Good for you for copying it. That kind of journalistic discipline ensures that nothing changes.
With a grandson who will be graduating from one of the premier charter schools in NYC this year and heading to a fine university with the goal of becoming a physician , we are MORE than pleased with the result .
His performance at this school which is admission by COMPETITIVE exam results and several interviews allowed him to Major in Biochemistry and while in HS accumulate 18 credit hrs of college work while scoring 1400 on his college SATs .
These selective admission High schools are extremely competitive , have top notch faculty and are REQUIRING academically . There ARE 6000 IN MY GRANDSONS SCHOOL and they also have top shelf athletics and all the ancillary cultural programs Theatre , fine arts and a serious COMMITTMENT to the state of the art technologies and INTERNSHIPS . Students are ABLE and MAJOR in programs much like in college/university education
There are no soft ball courses and students MUST do Serious PUBLIC service as a part of graduation requirement.
My point these are wonderful alternatives for VERY able students from all backgrounds and at THESE instituions they are surrounded by OTHERS who have the discipline , committment and ability to succeed .
They are NOT for those who squander the opportunity to develop their full potential.
Wouldn't it be nice if our teachers allowed more kids to have the opportunities your grandson had, 9:04. Fat chance.
The initiation of force is the antithesis of Liberty & your failed - as exposed in numerous studies over several decades - "traditional public education" exists upon a foundation of force.
I suggest parents would eagerly flee the "public education" system if state coercion were removed.
Requiring students to do serious public service is code speak for slave labor for liberal causes. That school is disgusting. Truth is that it is not the school that makes the students it is the students that make the school.
Sounds like that janitor is doing even better than the cops that get paid to roam the halls.
9:10 you have absolutely no first hand experience with these schools.
As a matter of fact you wear your ignorance as a badge of courage, when you speak as IF YOU KNOW . Engage your brain at least occasionally and check facts before you run that mouth as demonstrate for all to see what a lout you really are.
public service is a way of cultivating RESPONSIBILE citizenship-- a lesson you OBVIOUSLY never learned.
Those who advocate "... we have to dismantle public schools (the people who mostly hate Unions) and replace them with choice schools" are way off base as they further advocate and tolerate Lottery-type schools where the cream of the crop or top can be picked and chosen (not even counting the money under the table) as a quick fix to problem schools and yes,m there are some ...
A pathetic and greatly misguided view is what they advocate, however.
Nobody advocated dismantling the public schools, Dannie. A drive past any of them will confirm they aren't in much danger of collapse. The issue here is allowing the regular folks a choice. And perhaps jarring the publics schools, who have no shortage of money and fat, to start competing. But its people like you, receiver of a half assed degree in education taht requires you to bow to the system we have, that keeps young people from having those choices. The only thing you ever did for public schools is to sue them. Some contribution. And you and your type always talk about your concern for inner city/minority kids. These charter schools are their only hope. But you don't have to worry about that either, do you? You just tag your opposition as racist while you live in a tax sheltered property by the golf course. Lovely.
Notice no profanity.
8:44 you make Danny look like a rocket scientist. Your transparent humblebrag backfires because wise people know that mandatory volunteerism is an oxymoron and mainly serves to indoctrinate the young into collectivism with an eye toward socialism.
You are so stupid, you claim it is a matter of fact that I wear my ignorance as a badge of courage. I claim to have no courage and no badge for it either. I am a responsible citizen and any volunteering I did as a child was done voluntarily with the guidance of a parent rather than under the heavy hand of a school.
No Dan its simply economic and academic Darwinism and in many cases the selective high school in NYC are PUBLIC BUT they are for the ABLE , Committed and SERIOUS students who have a high degree of Achievement Motivation .
The general high school program serves those who are "inside the Bell Curve " wheres these Public Magnet schools are designed for HONORS Level kids who demonstrate high test scores on standrdized tests for admission AND a TRACK Record of Distinction.
Thus high achiever DO NOT get short changed in these environments.
Investing in those with the BEST chance for success is an idea that is long overdue.
Do you Bet on HIGH potential winners or not ? Those are MOST likely to become MAKERS not Takers
10 :31 Yada Yada yada from the Winger play book -- put a sock in it !!
I think I liked 10:31's post but I was unsure at the end. Too many needlessly big words. But 8:59, you say nothing at all.
