Blotter Light as the Drinking Class Flees City for the Waterfront

On what was one of the slowest nights of the year in the Watertown hospitality business, police were out with "sobriety checkpoints" and only netted a couple of DWI's....one at .08 and the other at .09.

That's really straining to get numbers.
Nobody was out Friday or Saturday nights in town. They could have gotten better numbers in Sackets.

The city police have done well to resist becoming Nazis all these years but it sounds like they are succumbing.

What are you inferring about the numbers? As mayor of our city you should be lauding their efforts to keep the streets safe, not making derogatory comments. Oh, forgot what business you're in.

As the mayor of the city he should be promulgating the idea that unreasonable search and seizure is never warranted especially to get someone for a BAC that should be legal because it is perfectly safe to drive with a BAC of the numbers cited.

Nice try Mister queen...Mister Dram-a queen

Cops on overtime on a holiday weekend. Can you say higher pensions ?

Yes I am in the bar business. We pay taxes too...Lots of them.

No clue who Mister Queen is, but sounds like a nerve was struck Mr. Mayor!

A BAC of .08 or .09 may be perfectly safe for some to drive with and perfectly unsafe for others. Weight, alcohol tolerance, whether the person drank on a full or empty stomach, all considerations. Don't drink and get behind the wheel and jeopardize my family because you feel like a perfectly safe driver after drinking. It's called breaking the law, tough if you don't like it, get a driver.

Join the crowd, we all pay taxes. Doesn't mean every law should be written to suit our occupation. I drive truck and think 65 is too slow on the highway, we could safely drive 75. Want to see an 80 year old woman driving 75 on 81?

You guys have to keep in mind that these checkpoints cost nothing. The money comes from grants and such, thus is FreeMoney. NO ONE knows where this money comes from. I'll give you 3:1 odds they come from the same place all the other money comes from. You.

Speeding is an apt comparison. Everyone knows the speed limits are not enforced down to the exact MPH. For instance on arsenal street the posted limit is 30 and when I drive 40 I still get passed by some a$$holes. The same leeway should apply to the BAC readings.

The only reason our BAC readings are so low is because we wanted free money for highway funding. The same way they got 21 as the legal age for drinking...dangle free money. Had nothing to do with safety. Just a bunch of MADD jackasses blindly pushing an agenda. Drama queens the whole lot of ya.

Keep in mind also as the police sit on some street waiting for the bad guys other crimes go down. I took my wife to work at 2am Sat. mourn. Saw no police on Arsenal street. Saw two girls walking the streets who looked like they were twelve. It might have been good to take them home? Saw at least two dudes drunk off their ass walking in and around the street. Sure i saw another bunch of drunks drive away from Taco-Bell. All while they made a few arrests on another street. I am for keeping drunks off the road. But traps don't work.

Why Mr Mayor, pick on Sackets? Worry about you own back yard.....you (watertown) have more than your share of ISSUES!!!

I don't drink alcohol, so I don't have a dog in this hunt, but I think these sobriety checkpoints are a disgraceful form of entrapment.

I'm not surprised that their sting only netted 2 people. Anyone who has anything to lose doesn't drink & drive.

Ray, I seriously doubt that every resource was tied up at the checkpoints. So you would have someone arrested for drunk walking, but drunk driving checkpoints are useless? If they're such a set up and only for money, why are they generally announced prior to night of the checkpoint, and fools still drink and try to get through?

9:38, lets just hope you keep living that charmed life and none of your family members are ever involved in an accident where someone was killed by a drunk driver. Maybe you should spend same amount of time researching MADD as you have given to researching NMA.

Hey 746 is right the GRANTS or FREE money mandate these scams happen on OT, hence higher pensions.

Who is picking on Sackets? We just want what is best for YOU. Don't you think road blocks that would make the Nazi's proud would be a good, safe thing for the citizens of Sackets Harbor? We are simply looking out for you. If it saves one child and all that.

as long as their pockets are full ..nothing else really matters .. its all about the money..

And trust me, their pockets are full. And the money came from somewhere else. You don't think YOU pay for this, do you? Nope, you just ask a polician, an Addie type. She'll tell you the money is from grants. And that money comes from a place far far away..

Right you are 908, I questioned this practise with the Sheriff's Dept. Yep the answer was FREE money, doesnt cost local taxpayers a cent, The Albany Mentality.

Half of the people who go to court next month will ask for a public defender. Might better pass a law where the officer can just pull the moron's rights to drive right there at the block. It is a big waste of our money.

That's true Catman. It is all part of the FreeStuff society we've put together. Everybody wins.

Only more to come. America will give away more money to the Middle East. America will more people to have more medical problems, so they can prop up the blotted medical practices of the good old USA. Who hasn't had their doctor ask you if you sleep well? I have three different doctors and they all asked the same question and tried to assign sleep testing. Are sleep treatments the new big money for doctors?

Asking for and getting are two different things.
And I want a source for the statistic about half.

We just listed countless reasons of why Sheriffs are self serving money hungry oppressive a$$hol%s with no sense of right and wrong and yet you want to give them even more power? You are an idiot.
