Regardless of Your Political Inclinations...Rest Assured There is a Such Thing as "Gotcha" Journalism

This is really the type of 'gotcha', blogger journalism that previous generations of NNY pols never had to face.
I mean really...Hanging around a restaurant and getting a photo that may or may not be two people kissing and then surrounding it with a narrative that makes it sound like its a big deal.
Back in the day, I remember being told not to shoot video with a prominent pol holding a drink at an event because it was a courtesy provided. That has changed.
I recall after winning an election, a photog hovering and if it looked like I was going to pick up a bottle of Miller Lite his camera was raised. I quickly learned the game being played and the photog had to settle for a picture with me in front of a Coors Light promotional piece showing an attractive woman. That was the piece printed to show I was a bar room deviant.
There was another time, a reporter new to town and unknown to me was assigned (he later told me) to sit in my tavern to get me reacting to or saying something snippy about an episode of ABCs 20/20 that was airing a story of local interest.
If someone is intent on telling a tale, they can be very sneaky.
If I had been Jude, I am not sure I would have reacted at all, and it may go no further than an Internet story for a day.

Matt Doheny does NOT care about the North Country...all he cares about is being a member of congress..even his wedding conveniently coincides with an election year...and although I do not know his fiance'..my guess is that being a spouse of a member of congress might further her career. Can someone tell me with all of Doheny's touting of his business acumen and all the jobs he claims to have created...how many jobs has he helped retain or create in the North Country??? How has he invested in the North Country except to try to further his political viability by showing up at a few not for profit events and throwing money around to political parties and candidates..He epitomizes political opportunism...and although I believe in live and let live this guy is far from the standard bearer for family values.

It isn't so much that media has changed, it is just that these days nearly everyone has a cell phone with a camera. So there doesn't need to be a member of the media present to catch a scandal anymore, it can be anyone, be it a political enemy or someone who just thinks it's a juicy story. For people to think the democrats were out following Matt around us just silly, the photographer was probably just a fellow restaurant patron who thought was he was seeing was juicy enough that people might have an interest. He was right.

10:34 If you read the article with the Photos it mentions it was a journalist who was taking these photos.

Even though Matt has created tons of jobs it doesn't matter because Owens has destroyed millions of jobs by voting for Nancycare.

Even though the picture is not what is being claimed, the good thing about so many cell phones and internet blogs is that no one would care if the picture were true or not.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain… your eyes are deceiving you. It's a left wing media conspiracy and “Gotcha” Journalism… case closed.

@ 9.15 AM

Exactly.

Like a Guy from Wallstreet would care about the people in the North Country.

It's between Doheny and his future Mrs. - not anyone else.

But, it does show how the game is played in DC - stay close to consultants and insiders... that much is apparent.

9:15 is right. Doheny doesn't really care about us. In fact, he hates us. He only loves himself. He probably hates his own mother. All he wants is power. He's a terrible person. I hate him. I hate where he is from. I hate his hair and his smile. I don't trust him. He lies a lot and doesn't like the food I like. I want that Owens guy to stay around because I want Nancie Pelosi to vote for me. I really hate Doheny. 9:15 is a very smart guy.

I agree with everything you said 9:34pm, except the part about "his hair and smile"... tee hee.

Why lie?

Why try to defend an indefensible position? Why not instead step back and tell the truth, it's the least damaging way to handle any scandal. Honesty is the best policy and I'm sure when calmer heads prevail we'll get the whole story about the Kissing Congressman,' Republican Congressional Candidate Matt Doheny.

This isn't just some personal issue. This guy is running to represent ME in congress, and at the end of the day, this is about trust. Can I trust this guy to do the right thing for me and everyone else he represents if the people closest to him can't? Can I trust him to NOT tie one on and make stupid judgement calls that will affect thousands? Not on my watch, pal.

Where is today's New York Post article on Doheny? I think the fact that there is a video of him groping two women might be relevant...

this latest from Jude:

omg RT @maureenoco Matt Doheny's press secretary, when asked about video of his candidate caressing two ladies: "Is there a video?"

There's more folks. Watch the VIDEO here:

Mayor - POST THE VIDEO. For all your advocacy that it was a doctored photo, you should let your readers decide. Hard to run from both the video and photos.

Gee - wonder why no link to the story in today's NY Post about the philandering congressional wanna be?

Jeff Graham said...

Never said it was a doctored photo. It is what it is.. It's just I am not that upset over it.

Press Conference Time:
It’s time for a Matt Doheny to hold a Press Conference to explain this behavior to everyone in the NY 21 Congressional District, concerning this incident in Washington, DC. Mayor Graham, you’re lowering the bar for someone else's bad behavior this time around. Maybe Matt can man up an explain it all himself. At least Congressman Weiner had the guts to do that when it was apparent to everyone that the time to be honest had arrived and he finally held a press conference.

Matt, the time for a Press Conference has arrived, and that is one open to questions from the press, and not just a prepared statement in front of a MIC, it's time to let us in to learn who you really are Mr. Doheny and if you can trusted with the NY 21 Congressional District.

I was going to vote for Matt before I saw the photo and I am going to vote for Matt now that I saw the photo.

It is interesting to see Newzjunky taking sides in this. They have gone out of their way to promote once side of the story. Interesting. I didn't realize NJ had a dog in this fight. Something to remember later on.

Is there any sort of pro-doheny spin a media outlet can put on this other than to not run the story?

1002 must have gotten a tee-shirt from Jude.
