Fort Drum is placing businesses off limits for sale of so-called 'synthetic marijuana'.
I assume that means the High Life which advertises Spice on television.
Like the whole War on Drugs, it's all a bit of a Sisiphyan act as young adults have come to the conclusion that escapism of some sort is what they want....Since our much heralded 21 year old drinking age has only resulted in a cottage industry of busting elderly convenience store clerks, I doubt this will stop the sale of real or artificial pot.
However, as responsible adults we have to enforce society's constraints and strictures, even though we know its not a war to be won.

Can't they just send a predator drone over there to the highlife? Or send that guy that went on the rampage the other day over in Crapistan? On the other hand...if that guy had some spice maybe he wouldn't have gone on the rampage.
Your wink and a nod response to the sale of "Spice" is a bad message to kids from the mayor of the city of Watertown.I recognize your friendship with Glen, who voices the commercials for the High Life, and apparently the owner is a regular call in to your radio show. However, these products are dangerous, marketed as being "cool" to the kids in our community.Ask any ER doctor if there are significant risks associated with their use.I guess why should you care, you maintain a safe enough distance from it, while espousing a "what is the harm people will do it anyways" stance..you are wrong on this issue, but as long as you can make money off other peoples' foibles, why shouldn't faux drug selling be legal too..
These fake drugs are cutting into drug dealers profits. Put a stop to that stat!
I hate to put you on the spot Mr. Mayor, BUT...
If the stuff is dangerous why are businesses in Watertown allowed to sell it? Can't the city say NO? At least can't the busineees be listed off limits by the city? I realize it's almost like pulling out nails for the city to be able to do anything. But, this stuff is a health issue that includes kids. The city doesn't allow girls o dance nude and it allows head shops. That seems a little out there. I'd rather see my teens go to a strip bar then a head shop any day.
Either put the stores on the off-limits list or don't. What the CG is doing by giving them the choice and a deadline for action is blackmail, and in effect making a decision for the whole community instead of what is in the confines of his gates. If it's legal and there is a market for it it should not be targetted in such a way.
Whether the stuff should be outlawed (it should) and if there are legit health concerns connected to it's usage (there are) are entirely different issues. This is about a base commander overstepping his bounds in the local community. Unless, of course, we capitulate to living in a police/paramilitary-state.
Typical, coming from an environment where funding and success is not driven by incentives or market forces such as supply/demand.
Amen 10:58 AM, and very well said. I think you covered all the key points here.
To say the least, Its a little disconcerting when you have a military installation such as Ft. Drum throwing out directives and dictates aimed at the business community.
It is crap that is not controled by the Food and Drug, and dangerous too. It is being smoked by people who we have put in charge of our Nation's future. Plus kids. It can mess a person up. Theuir health becomes a problem. Their mind slips away. You don't see a problem with that? The so called business community is behind it all the way? Thank God for Fort Drum having the balls to step in and stamp it down into the hole it needs to be in. It's selling garbage to fellow human beings. If that is what these places stand for, well I'm not for them. Do you shop in these places? If so I question what is wrong with you.
Putting businesses 'off limits' has been a regular methodology for ever in the military. Yes, they can tell the troops where they cannot go in the business community. It is the commanders responsibility to do so. If the civilian 'leaders' were as attentive to their responsibilities to the public the pot stores would be closed!
2:30 ~ I do not dispute the health risks (I am 10:58 above), but that is a seperate issue. Consider this: A recent study showed that, amongst other things, obesity is now considered a "National Security risk' amid the ranks of the US military.
If a base/post commander deemed it a significant health risk ~ nay, a NATIONAL SECURITY RISK ~ to his troops, what's to stop him from passing an edict for troops to stop patronizing... Buffalo Wild Wings. Olive Garden. Applebees. TGIF. Ci-Ci's. And so on. Anything other than what is 'allowed' (and regulated) by contract on-post.
Or DEMANDING THEM to change their menus.
This is about overstepping one's authority, and attempting a form of economic blackmail to strong-arm a local business to DO AS THEY SAY. Bottom line. I don't frequent these establishments myself, but who's to say where this type of action may lead.
I know a babysitter that smoked spice and then she put the baby in the microwave and cooked it. True story.
So then, we’re suppose to believe the absurd notion that somehow this will prevent soldiers from getting their hands on this or any other substance, legal or otherwise. Syracuse and Kingston is just an hour away. The Web is at their finger tips. What’s next… is Fort Drum’s top brass going to have the audacity to “order” the city officials in Syracuse or Kingston to comply with their demands or go after countless internet sites?
So what is your point 7:19pm?
I know a soldier that got really drunk on booze and then shot a bunch of kids in the face at close range. True story.
As far as being to fat to stay in, already on the books. They show up at PT and can't run, old Sarg. puts a boot up their ass. Same with the company Doc. They set a diet up. If you don't fix it, you get the boot. Fat men and ladys don't have a place in the Army son.
No one knows what happened to the kid over there, but the kid. He lost it. Anything to do with booze? Who the hell knows. I can't judge, you can't. We didn't just do three tours in a battle firld. He did.
Get the fact that if the Army sees a extra fatty burger as a problem in the training of it's troops, the troops won't be eating it. The Army tells you in the mourning how to poop, dress, and breath. That's what you sign up for.
Who loves these pot stores? Head shops? Do you buy the stuff there? I sure don't. I feel it's a danger to kids and adults alike. We would never allow a store to sell kids beer and cigs. Why do we allow this? It is not a funny story. It's life or death. Get your head out of la-la land.
As for people who sell it being just in it to make a profit, so are drug dealers down around the street.
So if both the shops and drug dealers have the same goal why make it easier for the ones that don't pay any sales tax or property tax? why make it easier for the ones the sponsor violence on our streets and support cartels in Mexico?
Who want's it to be easy? I want both arrested. BOTH OF THEM.
Paying tax on a product doesn't clean away all of the evils.
No one said it would.
What we do know is the same amount of drugs will be bought and used regardless if spice is shut down.
Might as well get a few bucks for the gov'mint in the process.
Nope. Sorry. Poor thinking on your part. You smoking the crap?
