Pension Debate Continues from Albany to Pete's

In a good natured way, one of my three teacher friends chided me at Pete's last night about supporting the Governor's pension reform plan...
Her contention is it takes away from working stiffs stuggling to earn both a living and a future. Why do I want to pick on future generations I was asked....Well, I responded that leaving in place a system that we cannot afford isn't doing anyone a favor in the present or the future.
She conceded there is gaming of the system and that some people have cashed in unduly.....I said its about changing things and the end result will be a compromise anyway.
By the time she left, we were still friends and the congenial atmosphere at Pete's prevailed.
We will see what comes of the Governor's efforts, which I think are laudable as changes have to happen if local governments are really going to live within a tax cap.
Watertown Daily Times Mayors Graham, Nelson support Cuomo’s pension plan

have her take a drive out to Bradly street or over to the Mall road or to Utica, Syracuse Binghamton and see what her party of pensions has done for the present. A decade or three ago today was everyone's' futures and now every manufacturing business is closed due to taxes. You can blame half of that on Clinton's NAFTA but since many states still have half their manufacturing left, the rest of the blame goes to our state tax rates and regulations.

If she was convinced that the current national policies foreshadow a dramatic economic recovery, a 401K style pension plan would be more preferable to the defined benefit plan currently in place.

I am a teacher and I am not your friend. There is nothing good natured about the Union busting tactics of this Governor or you Mr. Mayor.

Its exactly that tactic of busting unions that the Republican governors in other states have done. Cuomo hasnt done as bad he just snuggled up to the Senate GOP who bleed to bust unions and blame todays economy on the state, county, local workers that have pensions.. Are the Senators going to help cut the fat in ALbany like for instance Dean Skelos is a Senator his wife was appointed to a commission to review disability .. Over six figure salary with pension.... Cut some of these authorities we were promised to cut.. Dry hill commission was due to be cut but couldnt get support from Ritchie or other Republicans.. Oh I forgot most of the commission was appointed by a Republican and are Republican...
Why dont we just go back to the old days when employers demandedd a eighty hour week no benifits. If you were sick someone else was hired to replaice you.. If you joined a union you would be fired but if the union lasted then scabs would be hired the the employers would always find scabs to replace you.. Either that or hire someone to beat you or shoot you... Yah the good old days...
The money hungry mayors dont pay a nickle when times are good for pensions but when times are bad they have to pay and they dont like it... If the money saved in good times was not spend for foolish items and put aside there would be plenty saved to cover bad times...
Its all in the local budgets.. Its all in making the right choices of jobs and careers when you are younger.. People like Nelson and Graham need to look at their lives and realize they made bad choices.. Owning a bar isnt exactly a good career move and certainly cooking for a local Ogdensburg greasy spoon isnt a good choice.. Now he )Nelson heads maintance at Hepburn Hospital and fixes the toilets etc... Now they are jealous of those making the proper choices in life..

The Dry hill commission?

Is there any teacher (or other state pensioner) that really thinks that we will be able to survive all the payouts of the pension system? Isn't the only true question how long can we pay people a huge pension (untaxed) and still survive.

8:38 I receive a pension, and it sure is huge.Just over the poverty limit under state guidelines. It is also taxed by the federal goverment and subject to state tax if I move out of state. You and Mr Graham want to portray ALL workers receiving a pension as rich when it is the highly paid politicians and the select few who are making a hundred grand or more who incite your ire.It is not accurate or fair to lump everyone who earned a pension in there, the majority do not see anything like those people.Save your anger for those highly paid elite, not the working stiffs who did their best, did not game the system, and now receive their earned pension..

Teacher, I am a taxpayer and I am not YOUR friend. I'm sick of hearing you cry, complain, bitch, and gripe about your healthy paycheck. I'm tired of you moaning about your $2 copays, your raises that dwarf everyone else's, and your denial of the sweet retirement you are provided. I'm sick of your crap about your claims of advanced degrees, which are the most watered down jokes offered by academia, and the lies you spew about the long hours you work. Yours is a very part time job. Be advised that your days of living off propaganda and media complicity are numbered. And expect to see meaningful evaluations coming your way soon. Be happy that you scammed our kids at the time you did. In the future it won't be so easy. Tomorrow, have a nice, short day. And be sure to get out of the parking lot by 3PM.

Wow I'll bet 11:27 was a poor student/discipline problem in his day and is now getting payback by his childish rant. Get a life buddy. I hope you don't have any children who would have to deal with that ignorance on a daily basis.

No 9:32, I get my paycheck from you. Thanks very much.

Anonymous said...

I don't see where the ignorance is, 9:32. That pretty much tells it the way it is. Are you in favor of just keeping quiet about these things?

Th only ignorance i see is in the irrational hate towards teachers.
As I have said before here, and no one has effectivly countered the point, there is every reason to hate cops and the rest of government employees even more. They make more for doing less and get better perks and are not held accountable in the least.

Teachers on the other hand might have a water-downed degree but that could describe 90% of degrees in the country. (Or 100% if you are talking SLU). Just go to Cornell and see what degrees the Asians are signing up for and which ones they avoid like the plague.

Anyone with any experience recruiting and managing people knows that teachers are by and large good employees. Most teachers could quit their jobs and earn more doing something else. Most cops, firemen and DPW people could not do anything to make close to what they are making now.

Yes 10:49, teachers might make more money doing something else. At least that's what we always hear. Trouble is, none of them do that. Why? Because what you say is BS. Even if it were true, they would have to start working full time. And my God, they might even have to have the dreaded EVALUATIONS that real people have to endure. How horrible would that be?

Anonymous said...

10:49 you attempts to pit teachers against cops or firemen are idiotic, comparable to apples and oranges. It is given that teaching positions are considered white collar, while police and firemen are blue collar. However, many police and firemen attain advanced degrees in their specialty, and many are NYS accredited teachers. You obviously have some bias against them, probably from getting a ticket or getting arrested for something which you have built up in your mind that you couldn't have done.Or possibly you couldn't pass the PT test or more likely the psych test, given your unreasoning hatred.Cops and firemen are held accountable, not only by their supervision and evaluations, but by the media and the public.Doubtful you are scrutinized to such a degree..now send your mom to the convenience store to buy more ranch dressing and doritos, then go ahead and slam the people who would save your life without a second thought..

I would imagine many are teachers. Once a teacher realized they would have a better gig as a cop or fireman than they have as a teacher, then they will leave the profession that has a shortage in math, science, foreign languages and special Ed and go stand in line for the jobs that have the long waiting list because they are so overpaid and easy. It only makes sense because the psych test is the same for all three...do you like kicking puppies and are you an A-hole...answer yes for both and you are in.

How much is Glenn L making in Retirement? Did he pay the money back???????

So, first, teachers are supercool perfect employees, now they are leaving that to go to other civil service..give it up sport, you know you are as sub moronic as your posts clearly reveal.Guessing you probably can't even get to the psych test which explains your ignorance and jealousy. Now turn the light off in the basement and go sleepy so mommy can tuck you in..

You are the Einstein that informed us that many cops were NYS certified teachers. I simply pointed out it makes sense they would choose to jump to the better paying easier jobs.

My posts run circles round yours logically so if I am sub moronic I hate to imagine what that makes you.

I never said teachers were supercool.
I simply correctly pointed out they are generally competent and performing as they are asked to.
And I pointed out that the rest of government employees are held to less accountability and get paid even more.

Now go report to your fire shift or traffic duty and text your ugly girlfriend through the whole shift and hope your uglier wife doesn't find out about her or you might lose your American pickup truck and $150k house in the divorce.

Uh oh 9:40 looks like I touched a nerve with the mommy comments, sorry about that hopefully she decides to redecorate the basement for you soon..In the meantime I am done with responding to you,as your arguments are spurious and superfluous,as full of the unreasoning hatred that you must be.Apparently that's the kind of guy you are.But no worries pal,the fire and police people you keep slamming will still save your sorry ass when you get it in trouble, because that's the kind of people they are..
