A reader asked if Watertown has a secondary moniker like Ogdensburg has the "Maple City." We do, but its seldom used anymore...Remember the "Garland City" ?
The expression has faded, but I remember a Garland City Auto Parts store and maybe you all have references as well.
Actually, I am probably the only semi-media type to still use Maple City as an alternative reference to Ogdensburg. In my news world, it's like "Pope" and "Pontiff". You alternate usage so the prose isn't as dull.

So that's how the Garland City Auto Parts name got started. Always wonderd about that.
Thanks that is a neat old photo too..think we need to update, how about the Camo City? That doesn't have a ring to it either, but it beats the Crack City I guess..
Very interesting. Good choice of photo. I remember being able to view and purchase photos like this down at Severance back when we had real full service, knowledgeable camera shops. I miss all the boys and girls. Now we gots digital camera. How friggin fun. You can be as stupid as you wanna be.
I remember Garland city auto parts.
And have seen the reference to the garland city in the watertown history book. Although I guess anyone can write those things and get them printed.
I recall the sign that said watertown city of the future.
And Fulton had a sign that said Fulton, city with a future.
Big difference I guess.
You still see Flower city glass trucks around from rotenchester.
and the salt city has their museum in Liverpool explaining that name to us.
Ddespite any apologies or slights from Johnny Spasmz, Utica was once known as sin city because of its corruption.
And Oswego is named the port city but I suspect that had more to do with her stout women.
Wasnt there a Garland city trailer park too?
Maybe Gorman can tell us everything we need to know.
Garland city was the first name of the no rth side of the city of Watertown. That is what my late father told me when we were growing up on the noth side in Watertown
Garlands and heartfelt (not Drum-in$pired) patriotism have long since disappeared from the Square---along with the Woodruff, Woolworth's, the Town and Olympic Theaters, Smith & Percy, Grant's Drugs, WT Grant, Newberry's, Fannie Farmer candies, Empsall's men Store, NiMo, Conde's, cahill's,and on and on........thanks Urban Renewal!!!!
No.........Gorman is too busy convincing himself that Newzjunky hasn't impacted his once-great newspaper.La la la la. Just ask his reporters!!! They're the first ones to say they are working for a weekly---that they get their news from NJ!
